Inter will know they’ve been in a game

865

Someone asked me a few weeks ago if this was a must-win game.  Clearly it’s not, the cup games are must-win, as is the coming league game against Aberdeen, but tomorrow night is an important weathervane, indicating if the club is on the road to recovery.

Since that great high against Barcelona, we have faced Italian opposition twice, both in 2013, losing home games 0-3 to Juventus and Milan.  You can trace the decline in European performances through a subsequent Champions League group stage which concluded with five defeats, and last summer’s abject qualification campaign.

Indications are we are a better team now than we were in August, or even when qualifying from our Europa League group, but there is still an almighty task ahead tomorrow night.  I suspect none of this recent history will affect Ronny and his players.  The manager has told the players they can win.  Most of them are playing like they have a point to prove, all of them are looking forward to the challenge.

Inter will know they’ve been in a game.

  1. If Inter play Kovacic , they are likely to play Hernanes too.He will provide defensive cover for Kovacic .That will mean that Icardi will be upfront on his own.

  2. Bada,

A quid says someone’s on asking for the name of a bar in Ulan Bator where they can watch it first… :)

Must say I’m fascinated to see if Ronny sticks to his guns and plays the same way that has brought a run of good results .

Neil fancied taking on Juve and then Milan in an attacking style and we got our bums felt.

Still think he will change the team for tomorrow but Efe for Adam seems a step too far for anyone I have suggested it to.

Nothing superior about my knowledge .The Inter mad old codger from down the valley watches his team on my tele. I have seen every game they have played this season , including friendlies v Man U / Real Madrid etc .

  5. I think our overall fitness and sharpness will give Inter problems.

We have two other things to concern ourselves with though, one is their set-pieces and the second is our ability to hurt them (score).

If we can avoid gifting any goals, towards the end of the game I expect we may indeed get e few chances wo win it.

Not many Italian sides have come and attacked so that could be interesting.

Aye. We have to change tactics in Europe. Better opponents will pick off an unprotected defence.

If my assumption is correct, that the kkklub owes the company £16m from the accounts, then I don’t think Michael will mind too much if ming wins the EGM vote …..he’ll just sit and gather in the retail etc money…..then, when he gets bored, he’ll call in his loans

I will be in Glasgow tomorrow night. Does anyone know any pubs which will be showing Ulan Bator games?

    Thanks.

As Bawsman has left the building for the moment, can I just say that I think he meant 1997 rather than 2010 in his last post.

Apologies to you both if I’m wrong.

To be fair .. Guidetti was clued up on all things Celtic before he signed and seemed genuinely delighted to be donning the hoops.

I’m not convinced he’s worth a full time contract though. I would rather the money was used to find a more prolific striker, but we all know they’re few and far between. Someone in similar mould to Nadir Ciftci’s agent would be ideal :) The sulking Serb isn’t the answer.. Another complete waste of funds.

I do remember that far back- would things have been so much better if we had had a Labour government in power at Holyrood or Westminster since then? We shall never know -I would like to think they would have been but have my doubts . Enjoy your meeting.

Meeting was pants as usual but thanks anyway.

If Scotland had been Independent at the time of the banking crash your world would not be good.

If Gordon Brown or Alistair Darling had not been at the wheel at the time of the banking crash ALL our worlds would not be good.

Back then (prior to the crash), Brown wanted to apply restraint to the markets using the FSA, he got dogs abuse from the media, the city, the Tory’s and Alex Salmond. He (with hindsight) should have had the courage of his convictions.

I did mean 1997 (horrible time under the Tory’s), thank you.

  15. borgo67- I think we could get caught short if we try the high tempo pressing game, both full backs will need cover in front of them.HH

  16. Beatbhoy

I think you may be right. I know things are for most people now than they were in 2010. I remain less than convinced that overall things were any better for the poorest in society than in 97.

If I can sum where I stand on the forthcoming election it would be that Labour loses seats up here to bring its share of seats something close to proportionate of how many folk vote for it and that overall neither the Conservatives nor UKIP is a party of government. Labour may disapoint me but they at least make attractive promises and will try to implement them. I just do not believe they have ever succeeded enough in my life time.

And I say that with regret

  17. I think we will go the pressing game, that’s Rony’s template, we need the players to play to it at a higher technical level than SPL.

If we don’t have them we need to find some, the only way to find out if you’re good enough is to go toe to toe.

    Scary eh? :-)

  18. JJ,

I sure am man. Going against my principles. I’m a wee game hunter.

Would an independent Scotland have had the foresight to set up such a fund ..

Thank you for your reply. As I tried to tell Alfie I am no lover of the SNP or Salmond and as I said to a colleague on the 19/9/14 I thought that his personal performance on economic matters was not good. As a former professional economist with a bank – I used to work in the same building as him- this should have been his strong suit as well

If Scotland had been indepedent in 2008? I suppose it would have depended how long that would have been the case

  21. This time last year we were out of Europe, out of the League Cup, out of the Scottish Cup, and at the top of the league.

Here we are now – in Europa League last 32 with a sell-out tomorrow at CP – in the final of the League Cup – in the quarter-final of Scottish Cup and at the top of the league.

At this juncture, Ronny and the new team are doing well – so let’s enjoy tomorrow night, regardless of the result and then close-out the season with the TREBLE.

  22. Jimbo67

Yeah, Bawsman acknowledged the wee ‘mistake’.

Just thought it important to mention the date in the light of what his point was.

  26. I’m not expecting anything from the games against Inter. I think we’ve punched above our weight already in the EL and had a bit of good luck to get where we are and well done for that.

Our recent form in the SPFL has been good but consider the level of competition we have. Just as we have downsized, so have they. Anyway, here’s hoping we put on a good show tomorrow night.
