Inter will know they’ve been in a game

865

Someone asked me a few weeks ago if this was a must-win game.  Clearly it’s not, the cup games are must-win, as is the coming league game against Aberdeen, but tomorrow night is an important weathervane, indicating if the club is on the road to recovery.

Since that great high against Barcelona, we have faced Italian opposition twice, both in 2013, losing home games 0-3 to Juventus and Milan.  You can trace the decline in European performances through a subsequent Champions League group stage which concluded with five defeats, and last summer’s abject qualification campaign.

Indications are we are a better team now than we were in August, or even when qualifying from our Europa League group, but there is still an almighty task ahead tomorrow night.  I suspect none of this recent history will affect Ronny and his players.  The manager has told the players they can win.  Most of them are playing like they have a point to prove, all of them are looking forward to the challenge.

Inter will know they’ve been in a game.

  1. My feeling that tomorrow will be very tight – 1-0 either way – In eager anticipation of a spine-tingling atmosphere.

Let’s keep the Safe-Standing debate ‘in the limelight’ – if we don’t it will stay ‘in the long grass’ until ‘the powers that be’ can even things up and, get an Ibrox version to ‘come on stream’ simultaneously.

It always has to be ‘eatsy-peatsy’ in Scotland – as in the “one lot’s as bad as the other” tripe that the media like to peddle.

  2. Can’t wait for the game tomorrow, really looking forward to it got the butterflies in the tummy feeling, not had that for a while.

Exactly. Are we Morton’s benchmark? I don’t think so.

  5. “Guidetti just doesnt score enough goals better bet would be Cifci from D Utd”

    Jerry,

I believe guidetti has scored the same amount as Cifci in less games.

I do remember that far back- would things have been so much better if we had had a Labour government in power at Holyrood or Westminster since then? We shall never know -I would like to think they would have been but have my doubts . Enjoy your meeting.

What you mean is that you can ‘mouth off’ and no one else can – there’s that faux indignation again as you attempt to scale the moral high ground – its whereabouts of course, exclusively known to you.

Your affirmation that all was done between 1945 to 1951 is risible – in the extreme – how on earth could anyone who can read say that. If you say the period is the one you like – then that’s OK – but there is a thousand things implemented by Labour during the other 24 years in power – check Hansard if you need a ‘step for a hint’

What exactly constitutes ‘hectoring’ to you – pointing out the weaknesses in you long posting?

  13. I would take a clean sheet on Thursday. 0-0 would do. Anything better would be a bonus. We have shipped goals to average teams in Europe this season and I would be delighted to see an improvement on that.

The Italians will come and sit in and make it a frustrating night. It will make a huge effort to win the match and we will need a slice of luck. Inter will be dangerous on the break and we must be alert to it.

It’s a huge marker for how much we have improved but in reality I think Europe this season is a bonus and a nice to have. I hope Ronny and the Bhoys prove me massively wrong and go out and win the game comfortably but experience tells me that it will be sticky and very tough.

0-0 home and 1-1 away would do me.

  14. Everyone needs to calm down regarding the John Guidetti situation. He is already signed until the end of the season under the terms of a loan contract between Celtic and Manchester City. Why should he commit to a permanent contract 6 months before he has to? He is perfectly within his rights to wait until his current deal runs out in June.

As for kissing the badge, since when was that a reason for Celtic supporters to criticise a Celtic player? He is a Celtic player who loves the club and the fans, so why shouldn’t he display that?

Another thing, Celtic can’t just send the player back to City, as one poster suggested. Loan deals are subject to legal contracts and can only be cancelled with the agreement of both clubs.

Let the man play the game and do his best until the end of the season and if he signs a permanent contract, all well and good. If he goes elsewhere, that’s a shame, but while he’s here and wearing the Hoops, let’s cheer him to the rafters.

  15. I’ve no idea how tomorrow’s going to go – normally at this stage, id be thinking we’ll get walloped and passed off the pitch but we won’t know till the team take the pitch. we’ve enough running in the team to cut down their passing, fingers crossed.

    Paul 67 –

Toughest test of the season for Celtic.

Ronny has to get his approach spot on, because Inter, like Juventus and AC Milan, will have done their homework and identified any weaknesses we have.

No gung-ho approach. Celtic must be disciplined to get a good result on Thursday.

Dear Alfie, Keep fighting your corner, that’s what political debate is about. But allow others to fight theirs. And “..think it possible that you may be mistaken”, as Mr Cromwell said.

    —————————————————————————————————————

I always allow – I would not have it any other way.

As far as thinking it possible to be mistaken – that is always in the forefront of my mind – I will always bow to the presentation of ‘hard facts’ and have no problem in adjusting my opinion – however, I will not bend to regurgitated sound-bites, or indeed, to vitriolic abuse and name-calling.

” The Italians will come and sit in ”

I will be really surprised if they do.They dont have the players to park the bus..Their defence is the weakest part of the team..They will play on the front foot.

This is my last word to you, I have tried to be polite to you and stated that I wished that you would be to me and others.

You come away with a stream of well rehearsed , parrot learned regurgitations of what other people have said. You do not make reasoned arguments at all as you claim- instead you hector and you make incredibly crass generalisations about foodbanks, those who voted Yes and do make personal comments about those who criticise the board whether you would be prepared to admit that or not . Instructing somebody to ‘button it’ as you did last week when also accusing the same poster of being a ‘vulture’ waiting for Ronny. (The poster (Phyllis Dietrichson) chose not to acknowledge this but I am now doing so.

You have rarely if ever expressed any true affection for Celtic – instead we get a lot of sycophantic guff about Peter Lawwell and feeble satirizing of people who have a different point of view and who are connected. I have never accused you of being a troll although I feel that your motivation for coming on the board has been to promote a political party and whether that is a party that I like- and I still have some residual affection for Labour that I will never have for the SNP- I do not think that is what this blog should be about.

That last point is an opinion not a fact by the way.

    It’s 11 in 22 versus 11 in 27.
