Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

I take your point on board, however is not down to him as such, i think more down to the defensive ‘unit’ and style of play that they have. The boy is a better than average pro but nowhere near good enough for Celtic.

  3. VVD would have missed the next Euro League game had we gone thro`,this means he wont be available for CL qualifiers, assuming he is still here, 1 game or 2?

Most will jump to an assumption that any flares/smokes let off amongst the Celtic support are done so by the GB. This is done without a shred of evidence.

Pretty damn good scouting by Celtic, and Groningen will cash in with the sell on. I prefer my CB’s to kick the ball the way they face, a la Bobo Balde.

I can understand frustration, anger and even hostility against anyone who takes smokes or flares to the football if that’s not your thing. I don’t like them, I’ve had to take the missus outside twice when they’ve been let off near us because of her asthma.

However, I’d point out a couple of wee things. Celtic ‘ultras’ ARE Celtic supporters whether you like it or not mate. I’d also bet my pants that some of them spend a great deal more time and money supporting our club than most do.

Eg the tifo against Barcelona for our 125th anniversary took two full days to set up. I just think that’s worth remembering before we slate our own.

    ——

Genuinely, I’m not having a go at the people who follow Celtic. Not one bit.

My gripe, such as it is, is about ripping off the ultra movement, which to me seems unneccessary given the culture we have in our own movement.

For example, the barca display was brilliant. Outstanding. And one of many, I think.

Why call it a Tifo though?

Copying the ultra motif. I just don’t see the reason why they need to do it, but there we have it.

  12. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

The problem with Pyros at European away games is actually identifying the culprits. We have lots of Celtic fans from other parts of Europe who attend our away games, we also have lots of home based fans who attend European away games but never or seldom set foot inside Celtic Park.

When I went to Salzburg more than 50% of the group I met were either Bavarian or Austrian Celtic supporters and the other 50% were German based Scots.

When I was in Warsaw Mr Z was good enough to get me a ticket, so had I set off a flare amongst the Legia fans I was sitting with should Legia have been punished?

I don’t agree with the Pyros, in fact they piss me off having been close to a couple, but UEFA use this as an excuse to raise extra revenue. If it is an issue inside any football stadium then the local police should be dealing with it.

See before all the panty wetters start dribbling about the picture of the guy holding the flare, was it definitely from tonight?

A while back a Celtic supporter put a photo on Twitter saying it was from a game that night, it wasn’t, it was two years old. The paper ran with it and subsequently had to announce their error.

Possibly. I personally tjink that the Green Brigade are one of the best things to happen to Celtic in the past couple of decades. They are noisy, original and very innovative. Possibly the best group of Ultra fans in European and World football. They are mainly very young – and very exuberant – supporters. They bring a great atmosphere to games (which the club benefits from) and which supporters enjoy.

    Feyenoord equalise!

Yes some of these young ghuys need to curb their enthusiasm but I doubt if there are a group of fans in European football who are under the microscope as much as the GB (although the Feyenoord fans may prove me wrong after tonight).

Same old, same old…nearly. Difference was that we are clearly progressing, and now feeling much more confident going into the CL qualifiers – even with probable loss of VVD and JG.

Wee BGFC had tears of frustration in his eyes at the end – poor wee soul! Right now we are in the bath, and he is reading ‘Jock Stein – the Celtic Years’ by Tom Campbell and David Potter. Much happier now, describing the lead-up to the Leeds game at Hampden.

my better half (who is australian) says she cant understand half of what they are saying (mind you, she says that about glaswegians as well!)

I used to play football with a load of the Jamaican lads (some seriously skilled footballers – a couple of the guys from the canadian national team – but we used to beat them regularly as most of time as half the team was stoned! they were brilliantly funny though … when they would nutmeg someone, the game would sort of stop and they would all start dancing and laughing and would do that suck the air thing, and should ‘cooked meat, mon’ or ‘salad, mon’ …

I’ll speak up for the oppressed “where the f008 did they get the money to go to Milan’ – all day long.

But if there was a single Celtic fan that took a pyro to Milan after the fine yesterday, it’s quite frankly indefensible.

There’s really nothing else you can say about it.

  30. Well done Celtic, excellent performance despite a ridiculous referee.

That said, what could have been had the following happened.

1.Despite dramatic improvement Ronnie Deila made an absolute howler of a substitution taking GMS off.

2.Second howler putting James( sorry young James ) Forrest on.

3.Taking so long to play Commons.

I thought Ronnie and his Mgmt team were all in tune, so how they collectively agreed to remove GMS is shocking. What is more shocking was to play JF,no game time,no confidence,no heart ,does not chase or harass which is what is required for a 10 vs 11.

If you watch JF he runs towards the man on the ball ,never makes contact, never chases, when going forward always inside never outside to invite a tackle, how this guy is in our team at a European level game, approved by RD is bewildering, as I thought RD had all the players in categories.

We were as good as 9 men when he came on, we cannot afford less than 100%,in Europe,in the San Siro,in the team as a whole.

He did not get on the ball until 91st min with a crossfield run which predictably petered out.

Henderson even out of position, with pace, aggression and heart would have exerted more pressure on their back 4.

Obviously I would prefer the player was fit and in form but we CANNOT and SHOULD NOT be using a European tie as a test bed.

What happened to change a player, not good enough vs Hamilton, to suddenly be good enough as part of a 10 man team to beat Inter.

Sorry Ronnie, your doing well, but that was not logical at all.
