Israeli recruiting anchor

965

Anchoring to a distant geographical base is not intuitively how you would expect a football club to recruit but Celtic are clearly working their contacts in Israel these days.  Beram Kayal has worked out well in the two and a half years since joining from Maccabi Haifa, as has Nigeria international, Efe Ambrose, who joined from Israeli club Ashdod in the summer.

Neil Lennon recently mentioned he needed cover for left back (despite right-footed Adam Matthews performing heroics there against Barcelona), so it is no surprise that Israel international Rami Gershon is in town today.  Gershon has played less than a dozen games for Standard Liege since leaving Israel three years ago, although he was a regular pick for loan club Kortrijk.  Should he sign he will be a low-risk addition to the squad but he has almost certainly received commendation from the same sources who recommended Kayal and Ambrose.

Best of luck to Rabiu Ibrahim, who left for Kilmarnock after promising much but delivering little as a prodigy at Sporting and PSV Eindhoven.  He was the low-risk addition of last January.  You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs……

  1. Only problem I have with Rami is reading he has only played ONE game all season, so a good bit short of match sharpness. Not easy for players to catch up in such a short space of time to hit the ground running as he will need to do.

January should be used to bringing in possibles for a look, rather than throwing cash around. Although a number of players spring to mind that have suddenly lost that little extra they had prior to signing a long term / improved contract. Amazing how many find

top form when they are nearing the end of their own deals and due to become free agents.

We certainly need someone in midfield to pull the strings anything that ensures we are able to move the ball quicker from a to b will improve matters. We have too many players who need 3-4-5 touches to make simple passes, or worse fail to make the simple pass.

A proper partner for Hooper would also be a real bonus and a focal point fo our attacks to give the midfield a chance to support.

  6. Citibhoy @13:31 in your examples it’s the bankers, snake charmers, middlemen and bond salesmen who are the main beneficiaries.

In fact same ones as got us into this mess.

A large slice of the deficit goes to propping up the financial sector rather than anything productive. Just like credit card debt.

  7. Who’s up for some comedy gold?

@soccer_sauce: We understand that both #NCFC & #SAFC have submitted bids for Gary Hooper. #Celtic have accepted the #NCFC bid after rejecting the #SAFC one

  10. I get asked some really daft stuff at times but hats off to Steviebhoy for the following:

“I sometimes buy a bovril and a pie, and that might be regarded as ‘exploitation’, as I am charged for these before being allowed to consume them. Perhaps neganon2 can point me to another club who provide free refreshments for their supporters.”

And followed up with a – perhaps Neganon shouldnt be a Celtic supporter.

We would all love to see a Lubo or Paul McStay type player in the current team. Someone who has the skill and intelligence to make the defence splitting ‘killer’ pass but would NL play them on a regular basis? IMO I think Paddy could fill that spot if given the opportunity. NL seems to prefer his midfield filled with battlers and spoilers. Not sure how a play maker would fit in at present. Even Lubo wasn’t guaranteed a start under MON and i’m not sure if we had a younger version of him in our squad if he’d be an automatic 1st team choice for Lenny.

The first thing we have to do is abolish PAYE.

Because it costs more to collect than it raises in revenue.

    Doesn’t it?

  16. The thing i will remember about ibrahim was after the st mirren game last year i was hangin about outside the stadium for an hour or so waitin on a mate wen ibrahim dandered out all on his own draggin behind him one of them suitcases with wheels. He hung around for almost half an hour before walkin round the car park and into a taxi. Thought it was very strange behaviour for a professional footballer, almost felt sorry for him

  21. Oglach

Lubo might not be a first pick under Neilly, however The Maestro would be the first name on the team sheet as he was a superior combination of all the best bits of Lubo, Kayal & Neilly himself.

  22. oglach @14:00 totally agree.

If Celtic are after TV money they’ll need something pleasing on the eye.

Neil was risk averse as a player and is still so as a manager.

He did, however, inherit a shambles.

Last season’s over reliance on a tiring James Forrest has been exposed since he started picking up injuries. A direct consequence IMO.

Don’t follow you. Sky/ESPN buy scottish football because they get it for cheap and when Celtic are playing they are guaranteed big viewing figures.

They aren’t going to pay more just because we have stylish players.

  25. Paul 67, All

One of my concerns about kissing frogs , is that we often end up with toads.

In the last three transfer windows, we have brought in Lassad , Miku , Browzcek and Bangura, , and slightly further back Daryl Murphy.

The combined wages and outlays of these guys will be in the millions, but the combined goals is barely in the tens.

Someone like Leigh Griffiths would cost no more than £200 k , and has scored more in half a season than these guys have produced over 3 seasons.

Whilst I would love to see us sign a top class striker who can score in the CL, realistically that won’t happen.

So my provocation is , if we cant sign the elite , lets at least sign guys whom we know can score in our bread and butter league, and who are a lot less expensive.

Ultimately, I want us to sign better players, but when you look at the stats, who would you choose :

    Sheridan or Murphy

    Griffiths or Bangura

    £200 k frogs vs £3m toads ?

  26. Mort @14:18 it may be cheap but when people turn off it’s worthless.

Viewing figures for Scottish football are driven by Celtic fans, who are unhappy with what they see.

True, but it’s unlikely that will deter people from watching the game on TV. It may in fact deter them from going to the match but if its on TV, Celtic fans will continue to tune in in large numbers.
