Israeli recruiting anchor

965

Anchoring to a distant geographical base is not intuitively how you would expect a football club to recruit but Celtic are clearly working their contacts in Israel these days.  Beram Kayal has worked out well in the two and a half years since joining from Maccabi Haifa, as has Nigeria international, Efe Ambrose, who joined from Israeli club Ashdod in the summer.

Neil Lennon recently mentioned he needed cover for left back (despite right-footed Adam Matthews performing heroics there against Barcelona), so it is no surprise that Israel international Rami Gershon is in town today.  Gershon has played less than a dozen games for Standard Liege since leaving Israel three years ago, although he was a regular pick for loan club Kortrijk.  Should he sign he will be a low-risk addition to the squad but he has almost certainly received commendation from the same sources who recommended Kayal and Ambrose.

Best of luck to Rabiu Ibrahim, who left for Kilmarnock after promising much but delivering little as a prodigy at Sporting and PSV Eindhoven.  He was the low-risk addition of last January.  You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs……

Fair point. Actually, a young lad bedside me had to queue three times… Once to get his st, then at the match on the second, and then at the ticket office when he messed up at the turnstile and the steward wouldn’t let him in!

    Hail Hail!

  2. I see there were fewer bookings at the fiercely contested Edinburgh Derby (3) than were dished out to Celtic. On closer inspection, I note that Collum gave all 3 to the Hibees.

He must think we’ve brought out another away strip!

I knew you would say that, and I accept that the away tickets provision is probably a separate discussion.

Auldheid says the cost of supporting the club through watching a game can no longer fall mainly on SB sales. I agree with him, but what I am suggesting in addition is a way of sharing the cost of SB sales among a broader base of people who cannot afford the time or the money (including travel time and cost) to go to all or most home games, but have the time, the money and the desire to go to a decent number throughout the season.

Obviously this happens now and you can buy tickets and go to just about any game at Celtic Park you want (barring CL), but I am suggesting a way of formalising that more, so that if I can’t go to a game, the seat I occupied last time will be occupied by another member of my CSC. This is similar to Auldheid’s overseas SB idea, which I hope works.

Just like in Auldheid’s scenario, to get people to buy in to a more formalised way of doing things, it is fair enough to offer incentives. Celtic TV back at the CSC for the members who haven’t travelled to that particular game (but who have bought in) would be one incentive. I mentioned the away tickets as another, but as I said I can accept that it may be too complex to add into that particular mix.

    I’m glad I didn’t disappoint ;-)

I think the rest of your points are valid and worthy of greater consideration that on a football blog even one as esteemed as CQN.

    Something has to change.

For 2 recent home games Celtic made 5,000 tickets available free of charge to season ticket holders.

Now I can’t say for sure that not all of the tickets were utilised but I do know that the tickets could still be obtained on the Friday prior to both games.

It’s clearly not working if we can’t give away tickets.

My point wasn’t strictly about guys like Bangura being duds, it’s more about how we spend our money.

For £200k , we can get guys like Griffiths or Even , god forbid , Higdon whom we know will score in SPL , or , we go abroad and sign a guy on the assumption that because he is not from SPL he must be good.

If we are going to kiss frogs , I would rather we saved the cash and tried out proven SPL goals scorers , and used the saving to allow us to move into territory where can sign a player at the £3 /£4 m level , which still doesn’t guarantee success, but cuts the risk.

PS – agree about Kelvin Wilson , but in fairness the big guy has a hunger which I don’t see with Lassad or Miku.

the queue for the ticket office was down to London Road. Then probably another queue to get in the Park.We should be making it as easy as possible to get guys in to the game. Not everyone can afford a ST.

Great post BB and so very simple to alter when you think about it.

Interesting to note that Gollum shows a bias against other teams in green as well. Stevensons tackle was an absolute shocker- clear intent and a two footed, studs up, flying challenge. Was there a media scrum for action on this one?

Send a video of the Stevenson tackle to Craigan and Burley. The self-styled vigilantes of Scottish football appear to have a hotline to Lunny.

Oh, no, wait a minute……Stevenson disnae play for Celtic.

Only Man Utd and Arsenal have had more fans through the gates this season in the UK than Celtic who so far have had 778, 453 attend matches

I understand your point re wasting money on hoping that someone from another league must be better than what we have here but I also think its very foolish to assume that because a certain player has scored X amount of goals for an SPL side he will definitely score the same or more for us.

I think it would be very different/difficult for a player such as Griffiths to lead the line for Celtic than it would be for Hibs. For a start he doesn’t play against teams that play 8 or 9 men behind the ball every week.

I think McGinn is a great example of this, I don’t believe that he is now a better player than Hooper (or a much better player than when Celtic released him) because he’s scored more goals in the league but a lot of people seem to think he’d have scored just as many for us.

Surely if we are to go down the root of not wasting money we should give some of the younger players already at the club more game time.

  11. Can’t understand the comments re Lassad…played only. Handful of games..at least Hal of which were good performances

He has played poorly in some games ….haven’t all our players

Facing my first weekend in years with no booze. Sad but true. Not the most heroic of things done on here for charity but any little donation would be great even the price of a pint.

  14. Some players score more goals playing for teams other than CFC largely because of the way the opposition set up

When playing against us they play ten men behind the ball, packing the midfield …making it more difficult to score

Whereas against other opposition the game is more open with chances easier to come by

  15. Pfayr – fitba fans… Fickle people not known for their patience.

Parkheadcumsalfard – as a rule its wise to listen to people who have been right more often than they have been wrong. I have a few mates and relatives who know football and read the game like yer auld man. None of them are worrying about our current situation – i will keep listening to their opinion and ignore the knee jerk reactors.

PF Ayr- great point- and the all out defensive formations teams employ against us might be a reason that some people dont go to the games anymore. Its not that entertaining watching teams play a 4-5-1 formation with no ambition to venture over the half way line until the last 5 minutes of the game

  18. BFDJ – “Willie Collumn is held in very high esteem by the SFA”.

No wonder. An R.E. teacher in a R.C. school who is willing to do all he can to go against Celtic.

Good to see some discussion around ticketing attendances.

One of the ideas I like is when Celtic give ST holders the first option for buying extra tickets for games which are likely to sell out.

For me this has a lot of advantages to the club

    – the club get the money in early

    – the fans effectively become the salesman

    – the risk / loss from an empty seat lies with the ST holder , and thus he or she will work harder to make sure the seat is filled.

Fundamentally the best ticket sales people for the club are the guys on the park, and the AMBASSADORS ie us .

So , as a hypothetical example , instead of allowing fans to buy an extra seat for the Juve game , then a condition is added that you can buy two , but you must take a ticket for a home game ( at a discounted price), and if the seat is used, you get rewarded with discounts on merchandise / future season tickets etc.

This is only one idea, but , I am sure that there are others (probably better) out there.

    Thoughts ?
