It’s Easter, forgive

429

I was away from home when Brendan Rodgers left, so absorbed the news in isolation.  I didn’t feel any of the betrayal that others seemed to.  Maybe things would have been different if I was in the middle of things.  Maybe feelings of betrayal are contagious?

For me, feelings towards Celtic heroes leaving goes back to two players: Kenny Dalglish and Charlie Nicholas.  I was 10 when Kenny left and 11 when he came back with Liverpool, and the European Cup, for Jock Stein’s testimonial.  He was booed by some in the home support, which I found incredible.  He was our everything for so long and still a hero to me.

By the time Nicholas left in ’83 I felt differently.  I’d bought a “Charlie Nicholas” scarf and told myself that’s the last time I hold up a player’s name.  Even now when I walk past the vendors outside the ground I think back to that scarf.  It was sore.  Kenny went for the European Cup, Charlie when for the parties and the Tories, and cannot bring himself to speak generously of Celtic.  He is forgiven for leaving but his scarcely disguised resentment toward Celtic means I am finished with him.

As for Brendan, would you or I leave Celtic for a three year contract worth over £15m?  Of course not.  It is fair to say some have rejected fabulous offers to stay at Celtic Park, so maybe we really wouldn’t, but most go, even fans like you and me.

It was clear Brendan was working his ticket since he decided to create disruption in August.  He could have waited until the end of the season, but working with a disruptive influence, who refuses to cooperate in planning decisions, but will not admit why, it not an ideal scenario either.  I was not unhappy to see a clean break.

But for me, he is in the same column as Kenny Dalglish, not that nyaff Nicholas.  He won us an incredible invincible treble, then another treble and another League Cup.  Europe aside, he was magnificent.  There are no comparable candidates because few have his sheer presence.

He is part of our history, and when we hopefully look back on 10-in-a-row, you will want to remember all of it with a smile.  It’s Easter, forgive.

  1. I seem to remember almost the entire Blog saying that Petrie was blackmailing Celtic looking for way over the top. McGinn knew we wanted him, he was out of contract at year’s end, he was a dyed in the wool Tim and he would walk over broken glass to join the ‘tic. So the mantra was feck Petrie, hold our ground and we would get him for nada & teach Petrie a lesson.

We monitored him, at the death we matched the Villa bid but McGinn chose to go to Villa.

Now it’s all Lawell’s fault we should have given Petrie what he wanted & bought him, hindsight is indeed a wonderful gift.

  3. CORKCELT @ 6:53 PM,

That of course was all allusion. With hindsight more so.

Celtic and Hibs have done business as long as I’ve watched football. Petrie included.

We can go with the facts…

    What Lenny said

    What Brendan Rodgers said

    What John McGinn said

Or we can believe the hearsay…

Celtic should have had McGinn when he was a St Mirren player, before Rodgers was on the scene.

We screwed up on the transfer, it happens (often when it’s a player in) so that’s that… however this blame game nonsense doesn’t sit right.

We had Scott Allan as a nake weight and were in pole position. Steve Bruce run rings round us…

The blog told Celtic not to deal with Petrie and to get McGinn on a free, that’s not an allusion

Of course Brendan Rodgers went with some coaching staff. It was the “team” he brought in. There is no evidence to support the misguided assertion that he offered a position to anyone else.

Not ‘.misguided ‘ i do know this for a fact.

  7. glendalystonsils on

Brendan Rodgers did nothing wrong? Contractually maybe , but on a personal/professional level?

The players who respected , admired and looked up to him ,who found out he had gone through a third party?

The Celtic supporters he tried to soft soap from the distance and safety of his office in the King Power stadium

Bit like dumping your fiancee by text the day before your wedding while you’ re motoring south with your bit on the side.

  8. as regards Brendan, if you had 10 thousand people showing up to your unveiling at celtic park, the least you could have done was wait till the end of the season then go ,as far as im concerned that’s a slap in the face to those 10 thousand fans who came out to greet him.hh.

  10. THE_HUDDLE @ 7:14 PM,

Apologies, I wasn’t clear, I’ve posted before on this before and did so earlier today on the last thread.

My point is that some at Celtic disseminate (dis) information through indirect channels.

We, myself included, have seen this info as fact.

Corkcelt is quite right and much of the conversations around McGinn at the time was do we actually need/want him.

No, I wasn’t having a pop at Corkcelt just pointing out we have perceived “insider information” that is actually hyped up, we are duped if you will.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this for several years and can now see it for what it is… the stories following the departure of BR being a case in point…

Coming from a “trusted source” with little or no supporting evidence often the opposite but we believe what we want to believe.

It’s only the second one I’ve watched but another car crash presser from Neil Lennon.

The contrast between him and BR is night and day as he was pulled from pillar to post by the MSM looking for a quote.

On the eve of a weekend where Celtic could win the league he was happy to opine about the Scotland job for most of it ( he actually said the sacking of big Feck was ‘premature’.

He came across ad completely clueless when asked the only decent question about football and how Celtic could replicate Ajax.

He is not the man to take Celtic forward.

  16. `An allusion is a reference, direct or implied, to something or someone. … An illusion, on the other hand, is something that deceives the mind or senses …`

  17. Brendon done what just about every other player, coach and manager does. They look after number 1 and make the most of their careers. Celtic benefited from Brendon’s input and we all enjoyed good times under him.

Brendon was important to us, but much of the groundwork was already in place with regards the way we identified young players, the players in our team and the academy etc… With his input seemingly improving the structure and professionalism. Those improvements have remained in place and can be built upon.

Moving forward we need a coach that will fit into the structure and will ensure we make use of everything at our disposal.

Can we do better? Of course we can

We need to aim to reduce the squad size to 22 first team players only.

Prior to any first team departures we need to have identified thier replacements.

We need to aim to promote 2 or 3 academy graduates every 2 years to offer depth and progress.

We also need improvements in the facilities in and around the stadium including parking, toilets, cafes, restuarants, bars ect etc…. All of Which have been neglected for god knows how long.

  18. !!BADA BING!! @ 7:14 PM,

Always enjoy your contributions and insider info. I don’t doubt you hear solid info…

There will always be secrets at Football Clubs and that’s the way it should be but we should also be informed of what’s going on by the Club if and when it can.

My feeling is information is given in a need to know basis. We are a Football Club not a Financial House.

This in turn imo allows sleekits with an agenda to disseminate false notions to further these agendas.

Rangers always operate in this way… it’s always the same… I heard from a good source, two steps removed:)) that it was Celtic fans that beat up Lenny in Sauchiehall St… They always dessemiated this hunguffery and they always believed it…

Being in “the know” is one thing and it has always been a thing at Celtic.

But Timguffery, that’s a new thing and not good…

    HOT SMOKED @ 7:56 PM,

Yes I know and I do mean allusion…

More good news from the Lhad though, he has secured decent wee job back home! Well Edinburgh actually but its a damn sight nearer than London. He will be back up in June in plenty of time for the new season nice.

Now then, does amyone know of decent digs in Edinburgh for a good lad who is fully house trained? HH

Celtic allegedly ‘screwed up’ the signing of Alfredo Di Stéfano before Peter Lawwell had left school.

Fair enough. But what about the Wilf Mannion transfer in 1949. That’s when the rot started.

  21. Neil Lennons Press Conference.

Neil is honest and unfortunately in Scotland, he has to put up with so much drivel.

The leaking of a team is not right, that needs sorted as we go into the new Season. No matter who is in charge next Season of the Celts, there is no doubt an onslaught of ABC is coming.

  22. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Blogger GM 7:54

Haven’t heard that one, but I thought the one (last week?) where he had a pop at Gerrard was pretty bad. By all means defend SB against that ridiculous charge but absolutely no need to bring that club or their manager into it. Only serves to hype up a “rivalry” with them and that only helps them.

The MSM know he will always bite.

  23. “Some things in football defy satisfactory explanation. Top of that list is Alex McLeish’s Rangers winning a treble against Martin O’Neill’s Celtic in 2002-03. I know they were financially doped, as Michel Platini would put it, and I know we had the whole Seville thing going on that season, but Celtic were clearly the stronger side.

A gulf between the sides opened the following season, wider-still than the enormous talent of The Swede, but we were left to ponder what went wrong in the final weeks of season 2004-05 as Celtic an unfit looking Celtic were pipped, again, by McLeish.

During that period, he won everything he got close to.”

    *****

This is more offensive than quotes from ‘Fawlty Towers’ for those of us who paid thousands to watch a rigged game for over 10 years, with our club living down to the justified”Your Silence Is Deafening” jibes from other clubs’ supporters who at least prevented the almighty kick in the balls of SEVCO starting their life in the top tier by their threat to boycott season ticket renewals.

I also heard the NFL pressor. I though he was honest and measured in his reply. In fact he has matured so much off park that he has really impressed me.

No matter what some posters think, BR set the standards off the park ; by both, demeanour and technique. NFL has observed and learned.

I think he could be the man to take us forward. A man PL and DD trust may well be our best and most productive option.

  28. Greenpinata,

I agree, Dermot and Pedro have a very difficult choice to make.

Go for the sexy appointment – with the hounds of hell ready to be unleashed by the Haters to get @ any weak point – or go for someone who can withstand the hatred and do the job.

  30. Glendalystonsils,

I agree with that as well.

I know we shouldnae be a copycat club but Ajax spent a fortune on Daley Blind – a very average Man U player… ahem.

I’m sure Neil especially knows World fitba as much as anyone.

The balance needs to be right.

Everything needs to be right, to be brutally honest for Celtic to get to where we Deserve to be.

    Oh what a Night.

I’m hoping that Ajax win the CL (loved their strip when wee – obviously fitba too) and bloody the nose of the Big League Only bawbags.
