Janko, concentrate TV money on 6, not 42 clubs

1067

The assembly of Celtic-2015-16 continued apace yesterday with the arrival of Saidy Janko (19) from on a four year contract.  Saidy spent the second half of last season on loan to Bolton Wanderers, under Neil Lennon, in one of the game’s most bizarre transfers.

Manchester United were happy to allow Janko to go to Bolton in the winder transfer window but his absence would have left their U21 team short.  They needed a defender so Bolton offered Andy Kellett.  Kellett had only been in the field a total of 85 minutes in his Bolton career and had been farmed out to Portsmouth earlier in the season.  So it came as a surprise when Neil Lennon called to say “Pack your stuff, you’re going on loan to Manchester United”.

Saidy arrived in Manchester from Zurich as a 17-year-old right back but now plays all right-side positions.  There are things I like about this transfer: he’s been watched by the manager and scouts and was high on the wanted list. The success rate of players who have been well-scouted is vastly better than players who arrive after glowing references from respected names in the game, but where the Lennoxtown guys have only seen rare glimpses of the target.

It’s heartening to read glowing references from those who have watched him in England but references don’t mean he’ll make it at Celtic.

The use of New St Mirren Park by Celtic for a friendly game was not in itself controversial. Before being liquidated, Rangers used the same venue for youth games, and Celtic have often used Excelsior Stadium Airdrie for the same purpose.

But when photos emerged early yesterday of Celtic livery above the club shop, temporarily stocked with Celtic merchandise, it stirred something within St Mirren fans. They don’t mind their stadium being used by another club in return for cash, but for some, sensitivities need to be observed.

I can’t say I was remotely bothered by Commonwealth Games livery at Celtic Park last year, nor would I have raised an eyebrow to the Celtic Superstore being handed over for the sale of Commonwealth memorabilia, very few of us were. However, I have some sympathy for St Mirren fans. We were in a position of strength when we agreed to the Commonwealth deal, St Mirren have just been relegated and most fans expect their stay in the Championship to be more than a single season.

Yesterday’s livery was an indication of St Mirren’s place in the world, not so much a Celtic competitor, more a facilitator, who survived for years on a dividend from Celtic fans’ TV subscriptions.

Paisley is big enough to support a vibrant community club, but it’s too close to Glasgow to build an independently resourced competitor, they are not an Aberdeen, Dundee United, Dundee (maybe still), Hibs or Hearts. We have a handful of economically viable tier one football clubs and should nurture them accordingly, while aligning community clubs to focus on what should be their strengths.

Imagine, for a second, TV money concentrated on six clubs, not 42. These clubs would harvest the talent from a community feeder system and have the opportunity to build a sustainable businesses.

Selling Mathews kind of feels like this seasons Samaras, as no doubt in my mind Georgious would have increased our chances of getting past Maribor last season. Hopefully letting Adam go now instead of on transfer deadline day, won’t hinder our chances this season.

For the sums being touted selling now seems an unnecessary gamble.

CELTIC will need to pay £2million if they want to sign Nadir Ciftci from Dundee United.

The Parkhead club have made a second bid of around £1m knocked back from the Tannadice outfit and are now considering their next move.

Wigan Athletic are also interested and have made an offer of £1.5m, but it is thought the player himself is keen on a move to Glasgow.

Rangers stars ‘snubbed Paul Murray party’

THE Rangers squad – bar two players – snubbed an end-of-season reception after their play-off capitulation at the hands of Motherwell, it has been revealed.

Goalies Steve Simonsen and Lee Robinson were the only two to make an appearance at the Ibrox bash, with the rest of the players collecting their cars and then leaving, according to reports.

The reception – thought to have been laid on by Paul Murray – had been planned to thank the squad for their efforts.

A source told The Sun: “After the second leg of the play off final against Motherwell all of the players were invited to a reception in the Thornton Suite.

“It was thought they could have said their farewells to the staff and Paul Murray, who had organised the get together, planned to thank them personally for their efforts and wish those who were leaving the best of luck in the future.”

Matthews peaked in 2012/13, the season where he really came into his own – scoring goals, defending doggedly (at LB, remember!) v Barcelona in the 2-1 win – after an uncertain start the year before.

His form dropped considerably the following year (injury, I think, partly responsible), but has plummeted under Ronny. Now is the right time for him to leave (not the right time for us – that would have been 2013 in hindsight).

re. Europe, the performance v Barcelona was akin to a wildcard at Wimbers giving his all against a Federer or a Djokovic – he could never keep that up consistently. His other European performances have been simply not good enough, particularly away, where his lack of confidence has been a huge hindrance.

Matthews is still young and will hopefully come good again under a new manager. For his sake, and Celtic’s, I’m glad he’s going.

  17. Adam Matthews is a very promising attacking wing back who has served us well.

However he has one glaring weakness which he has never managed to sort out and that is in stopping a cross from coming in from his side.

Without improvement in that, he will not progress.

There’s a game going on here. Thomson at DU can’t be seen to accept Celtic’s bid, even if its the equal to the one accepted from Wigan, and needs to be seen to either knock Celtic back outright or get a larger fee than from any else who was interested.

The reality is the player can/will say that he will sit tight to January then sign a pre contract with Celtic and end up going for a couple of hundred thousand (like GMS).

Ciftci will sign for £1.5m max but will be reported as a lot more

Taking nothing away from Adam Mathews for his performance against Messi but is it easier for a predominantly right footed player to play on the left against him as he does go infield onto his left foot most of the time and hardly goes outside and to the byeline?

I dont know if some teams have tried that, but it seems like a tactic that might work better than a left footed player trying to track him inside.

Easy peasy this stopping Messi thing!

It is interesting that we have brought in another right back and we will even if Matthews goes to Sunderland still have four players on our books to cover the position. However,we still seem weak at left back I am sure Ronny would like to address this problem so watch this space. H.H.

  26. Thank goodness for the more recent honest assessments of Adam Mathews. I was beginning to think we were losing the next Dani Alves. Or has he turned up somewhere else recently?

  27. Sad to see Adam leave and I wish him the very best of luck in the future. But, Celtic are right to move him on and…they should also try to move Lustig on as well because, these two players…smashing as they were…are now into the territory were…sadly…they will be out injured more often than not…imho.

I think that, going by what I have seen from Tom Rogic that there is some ggod stuff there for, RD – JC – JK to work with.

Some talk earlier about Tony Stokes…I think that Stokes was played properly in his Falkirk days when…his manager, John Hughes played him in a team were…strikers got chances…that is crucial to ‘any’ striker. For me…Tony Stokes benefitted hugely from his ‘cosy’ relationship with Neil Lennon. There was a period near the end of Neil’s reign when, Stokes ‘walked’ into the team for about 3 months without scoring a goal or, looking like scoring…clique?….I think so.

Hopefully it’s RD who is making these ‘recruitment’ decisions and not you know who…but…when Celtic FC is run under a, {Confidentiality-Clause-Culture}…introduced by, swivel-eyed-Rory-Bremner…the sensible money would be on RD being the latest puppet to have his strings pulled….so sad.

Anyway…what do I know…well, I know that if ye ‘push’ a petition for a safe-standing-area-new-Jungle…then…the board will grant yer wish. But…the cutey-ghuy’s on the ole board know that…with the huns not coming up…Celtic’s S-B sales will fall…despite all the smoke & morrors guff…the board know that, Scottish football is ready to go full-circle to what it was like before the arrival of the ‘beast-Souness’…standing area’s will become the ‘main’ area’s in football stadiums in the next 5 years…imho.

Why have the petitioners not started a petition to get Lawwell sacked for ‘prostituting’ Celtic Park to the Common Wealth Games thingy…a move to ‘sneak’ another £5 million into the divvy-bonus-pot…whilst, humping the Celtic supporters / customers through to Murrayfield a move which, contributed ‘hugely’ to denying Celtic players and fans the chance to grace the CL-arena and, also put a £20 million hole in RD’s building plans.

Too many conceited-dreamers amongst the support today…imho.

Ah mean….petitions to get a ‘law / bill’…{rubber-stamped in the Celtic boardroom}…overturned or, reviewed.

Why cant these petitioners ‘see’ that, Celtic’s directors are in cahoots with the same establishment who try to do the Celtic supporters down?…talk about the huns being dafties?…really?

What was the other one that was doing the rounds?….oh yeah, a petition to get orange walks stopped?…what fluken planet are yeez on?…FMM.

I don’t know anybody from the Celtic Trust and, I’ve only heard some of Jeanette Findlays speeches but….something stinks.

Has someone from the Celtic Trust been bought-out by someone on the Celtic board?

To conclude….The Celtic Trust urny dafties…far from it and, they do a lot of amazing stuff but….some one must surely know that, Celtic’s directors have walked away from their involvement in the, creation of this terrible law / bill…that tells me that…something isny adding up.

I know that certain conceited-sorts will now post links to a statement without a name on the Celtic website abhoring this law / bill but…that is part of the spin so that Celtic fans will look the other way…thinking that, the board are on the same page as you…they’re not.

I canny do the link-thing but…during the ‘shame-game-era’ there was a pic on the back of the Evening Times…explaining that this law / bill was all about…smashing the Green Brigade…with a pic of, Paul McBride QC and sumdy else and, the narrative beneath the pic was mainly suggesting that, Celtic need to deal with this ‘troublesome’ group of fans or…the ‘shame-game’ would just be the beginning.
