Janko, concentrate TV money on 6, not 42 clubs

1067

The assembly of Celtic-2015-16 continued apace yesterday with the arrival of Saidy Janko (19) from on a four year contract.  Saidy spent the second half of last season on loan to Bolton Wanderers, under Neil Lennon, in one of the game’s most bizarre transfers.

Manchester United were happy to allow Janko to go to Bolton in the winder transfer window but his absence would have left their U21 team short.  They needed a defender so Bolton offered Andy Kellett.  Kellett had only been in the field a total of 85 minutes in his Bolton career and had been farmed out to Portsmouth earlier in the season.  So it came as a surprise when Neil Lennon called to say “Pack your stuff, you’re going on loan to Manchester United”.

Saidy arrived in Manchester from Zurich as a 17-year-old right back but now plays all right-side positions.  There are things I like about this transfer: he’s been watched by the manager and scouts and was high on the wanted list. The success rate of players who have been well-scouted is vastly better than players who arrive after glowing references from respected names in the game, but where the Lennoxtown guys have only seen rare glimpses of the target.

It’s heartening to read glowing references from those who have watched him in England but references don’t mean he’ll make it at Celtic.

The use of New St Mirren Park by Celtic for a friendly game was not in itself controversial. Before being liquidated, Rangers used the same venue for youth games, and Celtic have often used Excelsior Stadium Airdrie for the same purpose.

But when photos emerged early yesterday of Celtic livery above the club shop, temporarily stocked with Celtic merchandise, it stirred something within St Mirren fans. They don’t mind their stadium being used by another club in return for cash, but for some, sensitivities need to be observed.

I can’t say I was remotely bothered by Commonwealth Games livery at Celtic Park last year, nor would I have raised an eyebrow to the Celtic Superstore being handed over for the sale of Commonwealth memorabilia, very few of us were. However, I have some sympathy for St Mirren fans. We were in a position of strength when we agreed to the Commonwealth deal, St Mirren have just been relegated and most fans expect their stay in the Championship to be more than a single season.

Yesterday’s livery was an indication of St Mirren’s place in the world, not so much a Celtic competitor, more a facilitator, who survived for years on a dividend from Celtic fans’ TV subscriptions.

Paisley is big enough to support a vibrant community club, but it’s too close to Glasgow to build an independently resourced competitor, they are not an Aberdeen, Dundee United, Dundee (maybe still), Hibs or Hearts. We have a handful of economically viable tier one football clubs and should nurture them accordingly, while aligning community clubs to focus on what should be their strengths.

Imagine, for a second, TV money concentrated on six clubs, not 42. These clubs would harvest the talent from a community feeder system and have the opportunity to build a sustainable businesses.

Surely if The Rangers have any fans posting on CQN providing they put there point of view over and discuss things in a decent manner we should accept the blog will benefit from there alternative views.Currently as Celtic supporters we have similar views on football so the blog at times can be a bit samey so supporters of other teams can bring fresh interest to the blog.H.H.

I’m glad ole John Noakes turned up safe and well and he didn’t even have to change his moniker.

  5. My friends in Celtic,

Yes I wish we could magic up a striker that would score 30 plus domestic goals and guarantee us x amount of European goals . Is it possible within our price range :- maybes aye, maybes naw.

Nevertheless I feel that we are better equipped and more importantly prepared going into this season that we have been for many a year.

And incidentally Paradise itself is better prepared than I have ever seen it.

Sorry. I’m guilty of typing those wee dots as well on occasion. Despite not even knowing if I’m using them in the right context, or if they are grammatically correct.

Almost certain that the wee dots aren’t supposed to be typed after each and every word though lol.

    Apologies for any offence caused.

  9. I see Kev J is now spouting about Lustig.I will repost from last night.

Dont like all this “Lustig is injury prone”guff that seems to be pervading the Celtic support. The boy had a double hip op which was a total success, then got a really bad injury at Dundee making a terrific last gasp tackle. He has played 312 games in 10 years, and 26 full International caps.

    Injury prone my @rse.

Is this a player who is”Injury prone”.Some stories just seem to sprout wings and are accepted as gospel.Broony has had a few long spells out with injury. Not a hint of “Injury prone”.Adam Mathews was seriously assaulted on the pitch a couple of times, resulting in serious injury, result,he is labelled by some, the same.

Some players are just unlucky ,some are not,but the way some go on,Lustig is classed the same as Derk !!!!!!!!.

  10. More hilarity being reported from Camp Warbs today

Mini organized a party after the Motherwell game,to tell the players “Thanks, but you are bumped”and surprisingly only the two reserve keepers turned up !!!!!!!.Imagine that?.

Gary Ralston will be in meltdown mode once again, but will no doubt manage to get in a plug for ST sales.

CG has been used as a stick to beat the board. but was it no a 0-1 at CP that put us out CL. You sound as bad as MSM at making facts fit you agenda by hammering on about Murrayfield. IMHO of course. PS – I loved my two days in Edinburgh although the actual Legit game was torture but tims telly meaningless.

BMCUWP quite right mate the day we can’t handle blue noses in here would be a sad day for this blog. Edward Ursus was a welcome and valued contributor in his day. If a sevco engages with us be civil because there grandchildren will be Celtic supporters.

  14. Well…it’s like this…how many games has Lustig played for Celtic?…How manygames has he missed for Celtic through injury?..Was he injured when he was signed?..Do celtic seal thei recruitment deals based on, how much can be trousered?…Rather than, how fit the player is?…The reason that I ask is, why did Celtic negotiate a ‘reduced’ deal for Derk…after he ‘failed’ his medical?…Ye see, there are too many Arthur Daley types at Celtic Park who have become very wealthy during all these ‘deals’ whilst, the gluttonous Celtic supporters of today scoffed jelly & ice cream whilst the ‘ral’ scam went on…under their noses.

When rebels are replaced by conceited-cliques amongst the support…a rudderless ship will be your kingdom.

Broony…well, if Broony wasn’t out suspended for his kid-on hard-man antics when we were going for 3 in a row under WGS…we wouldn’t have won 3 in a row…coz, we were playing v’s a huns team who were needing s couple of ‘skelpers’ to get effed-in aboot them…step forward – Barry Robson and, Paul Hartley, two players who are blessed with the ‘secret’ gift of ball-winning-midfielders…the ability to tackle without fouling.

Murdo had it – Burley had it – Lennon had it…be tough, not violent.

Erm,the point was that we would rather have an outright Tebbitt of a man than the like of IDS. No-one mentioned laughing at him,nor his blameless wife.

You seem to be seeking offence these days, this on the back of your reaction to a Pilger article-straightforward Ad Hominem-and the Thatcherism one where you decided it could be discarded on the basis of two accompanying photos. Judging a book by its cover,I think better of you than that.

FWIW,I think the IRA chose a more legitimate target that night than they had previously. And Mrs Tebbitt was treated in a specialist hospital,Stoke Mandeville, which the Tories were desperately trying to close.

If you take away half of last season when he had the Hip op,and the injury at Dundee,he has played 90 times for Celtic, scoring 14 goals,in a 3 and a half year spell at the club.Take into consideration, that Mathews got game time, not only when Lustig was out injured, then to say the boy is “Injury prone”is ludicrous.248 appearances in 6 and half years before, further buries the myth, but feel free to keep perpetuating the guff.

Celtic will have to double their bid to land Nadir Ciftci

    Neil Cameron

    Friday 3 July 2015

CELTIC will need to pay £2million if they want to sign Nadir Ciftci from Dundee United.

The Parkhead club have made a second bid of around £1m knocked back from the Tannadice outfit and are now considering their next move.

Wigan Athletic are also interested and have made an offer of £1.5m, but it is thought the player himself is keen on a move to Glasgow.

Unbelievable. Why would we need to go to £2 million?.No name on this pearl of wisdom.

Think you can beliece Ciftci will be with Celtic.Obvious where the boy wants to go.

    Totally agree.

Neither Adam nor Beram’s injuries were severe enough to change their ability on a football field. Matthews attacking play hasn’t got any worse. Unfortunately his defending never got any better!! When Kayal broke into the Celtic team it was the season after NGuemo. Naturally he looked like a world beater compared to what we had been used to in the recent past. We subsequently went and bought far superior players (Wanyama, Johansen etc).

As Proudbhoy mentions above, poor Paul George is an example of a player who was never the same after an horrific injury!! He was the superstar in the group that included McGregor, Watt, Twardzik and McGeough.

  28. Why should Celtic take in £1.5 million for the always injured Adam Matthews and then baulk at having to pay £2 million for the fine specimen Cifti…why is it like that?

More to the point…why are fans ‘conditioned / brainwashed’ into thinking like this?…Dullards?…Hmmm?
