Jar to the senses

568

It was such a jar to the senses.  Twice a striker was clean through on the keeper inside the box.  For 12 months, this only led to one outcome.  Last night we saw Joe Hart make two saves we have not seen since his former England squad team mate was in goal.

Playing out from the back, as we do, takes nerves and practice.  The key players are the goalkeeper, the central defenders and the two deepest central mids.  The latter two need to be comfortable controlling a pass facing their own goal with an opponent on their shoulder.  Callum McGregor and David Tunbull have this.

You can expect a few bumps on the road; McGregor’s nightmare back pass being an example, but we will improve as the season progresses.  Developing this attribute will inevitably cost goals, but you see the speed and effectiveness of the transition into attack.  Gone are the days of circulating the ball endlessly in a horseshoe pattern, or worse, the long ball.

I also liked our new player, Tom Rogic – another who has the ability to bring the ball under instant control with an opponent (or two, as it often was last night) breathing down on him.  Kenny Dalglish would use his body to keep an opponent from getting a toe on the ball, Tom brought it all back last night.  For me, this is an unexpected sunset performance.  Tom is a throwback, without an engine for the modern game, so these treats will remain a cameo.

How are you feeling about the direction of travel?

Last night’s starting 11 had three new signings, eight players who were here last season, seven of whom are Scottish.  Three signings and, of course, a manager we traveled the world to bring to Glasgow!  There are certainly no guarantees against AZ, but the recovery has been swift and impressive.  You are not going to hear this from too many sources, but the fundamentals at the club remain very good; watch how we grow.

Missed out on — contact was made = BFDJ and KB / Carlisle.

Missed out on — not sure if they were ever contacted = JJ / GMcQ / GS?

JS seemed to bring in established players from other SFL / SPL sides.

If you don’t know who RMcD was in respect to our defence in the 70’s then you are a lucky man.

  6. Pete…competition…and 1st team replacements…window is still open…we’re stuck for Europe jist now (sum eejits will say it’s part of a ploy….rather than unimaginative incompetence)…but the direction of travel under Ange is a breath of fresh air ;-))

  7. Our missing CB issue — add JH to the list.

GC was — from a very distant memory — more of a sweeper / JC style defender.

Not a BMcN style No.5 which would have been the position for JH or GMcQ.

Alas your prob right re reacfton to Scotlamds establishment.it would touch to many vested interests .

i think more insight and knowledge of rfc self harm re minty 2012 will come out as history goes on.

Ernie dolemans tale of the judge askin ‘who is to say mr ahmed is not sittin in court in glasgow’? is comical if not a light on the incompetence.

  9. Evening all, as the clock strikes 12 I celebrate my birthday which I share with the famous “Hoops” of our magic club. First time we played in the horizontal “stripes” as they were then called, was in 1903 whilst Mr Maley was in charge. The first goals in the hoops were scored by Alec Bennett and Jimmy Quinn as we beat Partick Thistle 2-1. You may recall the 100 anniversary was in 2003 when Seville was in our sights. This remains my proudest (witnessed)moment as a Celtic supporter despite the result. The behaviour of support(and our support combined with the team imo got us there) was exemplary. We went into to every tie with that beautiful little feeling of hope and faith which even the several Friday morning hangovers couldn’t kick😉. Get passed AZ I and feel this new style gets us past the group stage and feared beyond that. Hail Hail, Martim Moniz🍀

  11. My only interest right now as a supporter of celtic is that we get the players we need to push on and that we quickly turn the landscape of scottish football back in our favour and to reestablish some pride in European football.

If we provide Ange with a quality rightback, centreback, leftback and left winger I believe he will be able to put a league winning team together. A forward will also need to be purchased in event eduard is sold.

Once managed Dom and co can do a thorough review of all departments at the club and make necessary changes. There is many and perhaps asking the supporters about their issues would be a good starting point re: public relations, ticketing, facilities etc.

The supporters groups, if still unhappy can go develop a plan to purchase enough shares to force the board to listen. This may be a long drawn out process but it is not impossible.

Have an awesome day watching Celtic hit Hearts for 5.

50 next year, if God allows, I think we will have an Incredible team then. Ange is Hard as nails, unassuming, our Celts down under were excited by him getting the gig.

I hope our Board back him to the hilt.
