Johansen becomes second Celtic addition

818

I’ve seen nothing of Stefan Johansen but I’m delighted we have signed a central midfield player.  Deficiencies up front are glaring, especially in the Premiership, but in Europe, the critical area is central mid, where we need to control more than we did this season.

Central midfield protects your defence and provides the foundations strikers stand on, it has been an important area for Celtic to strengthen since losing our top man last summer.

Conversely, Scott Brown is playing his best football since joining Celtic in 2007 but, as his European adventures were nullified by disciplinary action, the gap was unbridgeable.  Honourable mentions should go to Charlie Mulgrew, Beram Kayal and Joe Ledley, but in the case of Charlie and Joe, they were asked to play secondary, or tertiary roles, while Beram was promoted from well down the pecking order to a Champions League starter.

Please observe the usual caveats when a new player arrives.  New club, new city, new tactics, team mates, match officials and game atmosphere, Stefan has a lot to assimilate in the coming weeks.  It took six months for Victor to settle and at least as long before Mikael, Scott and Joe looked their best.

For Stefan and Holmbert Fridjonsson the primary objective of the next six months is to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, closely followed by a Scottish Cup tie against Aberdeen in three weeks.

Welcome to Celtic, Stefan.  You have a fantastic opportunity ahead.

On a very serious note and genuinely following the debate, Celtic’s silence is arguably the only preventative measure in place, to save the lives of Celtic supporters, living in Glasgow especially.

‘Social unrest’ really meant ‘blue murder’

It is a tinderbox city and the people believe they have a grievance despite

Celtic’s uneasy unpalpable for many silence.

I’ve just entered the nuclear shelter in the garden. Now (even though I am a scottish and irish nationalist-always through peaceful means), I don’t believe that politics belongs in sport. Sport for me is where people actually put politics to one side and enjoy competition. If they don’t, sport is knackered. Moscow/LA.Munich olympics etc.

With this wishy washy Martin Luther King rather than malcolm X attitude, I can’t actually find any evidence whatsoever of celtic being a ‘political’ football club.

Founded by the superb Brother walfrid, I’d say we were formed (in no particular order) to:

1- Emulate Hibs success, much appreciated by the Irish community

2- To feed the Catholic poor in the east end

3- To stop starving Catholics being influenced by those nasty protestants who were feeding the east end Catholic poor also

4- To deliver a dynamic Catholic football team.

If I was pressed to define celtic, I would describe us as an inclusive but Catholic football club. Even though I think the Vatican may possibly be where satan lives, I can live with that. All the local Marist brothers I was taught by were cool.

No official document ever mentioned politics.

Celtic are not a political team- born in Ireland and catholic, but not political.

Personally I find all the wee Men Behind The Wire really annoying – you aren’t the club. You decided to project your tribalism, prejudices, politics, call it what you will, onto the club, and I’ve had to listen to it for near 40 years. You’d rather chant about a urban guerilla campaign than chant a players’ name. It’s embarrassing.

Anyway, Breaking bad – what a series eh!

  3. BSR, the Club also will be worried, with good reason, about staff working in Celtic Shops in shopping centres.

Don’t know about Paul Currie but Justin Currie of Del Amitri is a massive Tim. He tells of a story about an Old Firm game at CP back in the 80s when he phoned CP to try and blah a ticket for the game.

The conversation went something like this: “Hello, this is Justin Currie of Del Amitri. I would love to attend the big game on Saturday, would there be any chance of a ticket?”

After a minute or so chat in the background, he is told ” We’ll give you tickets for the Band as long as you make sure Del comes with you to the game.”

Exactly right. That is what is potentially at stake.

Speak softly and carry a big (proverbial) stick.

  11. Jude, you have a better memory than me:-)

I remember the chant, but not on the day.

I remember my brother and me, one on my Dads, one on Jim’s shoulders, walking back to the bus, the whole of Leith Walk swaying, scarves held aloft, just a sea of Green and White.

We had been going for a few years by then, but that’s a vivid memory.

  12. bsr

Aye, I know, lived through it, it was the main reason I left scotland, and have never lived in Glasgow.

So, what’s the answer, serious question ?

As neg2 and many others, myself included are saying, why prop up this sectarian charade, they would see us dead, they will do everything in their power to bring us down, their hate for us is what is driving them.

I have said it before, and will say it again, and will make no appologie for repeating it again, we are not that far away from being akin to a Jewish team playing football in Nazi Germany.

That may sound a tad ott, but I honestly don’t think it is, I could sight countless things to back it up.

Nobody thought the troubles in Ireland would have escalated to the peaks they did, the killings in the Balkans, these things creep up and are well out of control before anyone decides to do anything about it.

We need to get out, no other answer, we stay we die.
