Jota, the hamstring and the contract

231

It has been five weeks since Jota pulled up clenching his left hamstring against Hearts.  The intervening period has been busy for Celtic, six wins, one of which was the League Cup Final, and a draw, three signings and a double contagion of further hamstrings and illness, put thoughts of our Portuguese winger to the back of our minds.

Ange Postecoglou intimated his was the most severe of the many similar injuries sustained in December.  Initial hopes were that he would return after the winter break, which is far from sure as things stand.  The player has rested but not tested his injury yet.  He has had the equivalent of a close season on the sidelines and will have a corresponding ‘preseason’ recovery regime to get back to full fitness.  That starts after his injury is considered fixed.

Jota has been an irrefutable success since arriving on loan from Benfica in the summer.  He delivers goals, assists and the best at the club in transitioning defence into attack (what was known as an out ball, in old money).  Celtic are right to setup the process to confirm his permanent transfer, at a reported £6.5m, he is value.  Still, that hamstring.

Hamstrings are one of the most pernicious injuries a player can get.  They can inflict untold damage across many years.  Shaun Maloney was plagued for years, before eventually finding a way to train and play that protected his damaged muscle.

Get the deal with Benfica ready to sign, pending a fitness test as late in the season as possible.  If he does not play for an extended period without remission, we should not sign him.  If you want to maximise your potential as a club, there is no room for sentiment or wishful thinking.

  1. Bodo have just signed the magnificently named Brice Wembangomo, a nippy RB.

They’ve taken a hit recently but will clearly strengthen before meeting us with a few bob in their pocket.

Amazed to read that Hibs have signed a 19 year old striker from Bodo /Glimt for £15 million pounds.

At least I think that is what the report meant to say when it said “an undisclosed fee”.

Surprised we don’t have a new article on the continuation of 500 restrictions at football grounds😱

    Why 500? Why not 5,000? or 10,000?

All the grounds in Scotland have a different maximum capacity so why not simply a percentage of that capacity?

Its blatantly obvious that they’ve plucked that figure out of the air, then made it policy, no mention of ‘following the science’,

Everyone seems concerned that she will extend that limit indefinitely, but no one is prepared to challenge them on the 500 capacity,

Maybe we should take a lead from the rugby guys, and consider playing out of England.

Just being curious here, cant help but notice that Craig Gordon is now rated by just about everyone (in Scotland) as being the best goalkeeper in the country,

good for Craig, he done a great job for us and we bungled it by making him an offer he had to refuse,

But I can’t recall him being acclaimed as the best goalie in the country when he played for us, or am I looking to be offended?

    Genuine question.

There is a BBC article about hamstring injuries at Liverpool dated 6th January 2016. Around 5 players have hamstring injuries and its reckoned to be new system and training regimes.

Don’t know how to cut and paste but type in google:

Basically says players will get used to it

Klopp had similar problems at Dortmund, although it might not have been specifically hamstrings

The accusation was that towards the end of the season his overworked overtrained teams were exhausted and suffered too many injuries as a result

I don’t think this is a surprise to Ange.

  13. The New York Times, reviewing a Frontline documentary examining the circumstances of Farrell’s death, stated: ‘Mairead Farrell might be dismissed as some wild-eyed fanatic except that part of her life has been preserved in several home movies and a television interview taped shortly before her death. What emerges is a portrait of a soft-spoken, attractive woman determined to end what she perceived as the injustices surrounding her everyday life…. ”

if that genuinely is the case, i.e.we were simply a shop window for him, then really don’t want that sort at Celtic,

however dont think that is the case, think we will sign him.

I noticed that the FM specifically mentioned the date January 17 (2022) in relation to the restrictions which apply to outdoor and indoor events, the very day we are due to play Hibernian in the re-arranged game.

    This sounds great!

“Daizen is a physical beast. You’d have no issues sending him anywhere in Europe because it won’t be a problem to him.

“He’s a machine. The improvement in him over the last season or so under Ange was incredible.

“He makes dangerous forward runs and scores goals.

“He will terrorise defenders in Scotland. If it clicks for him with Furuhashi up front, which I think it will, it will be frightening for the other teams.

“He’s different to Furuhashi in that he’s more all-action and powerful.

“We played him the majority of last season on the left wing, but when he gets in the box his first-time finishing is very good.”

From Ange’s former right hand man John Hutchins, and even better, he’s not been called up by Japan.

Interesting that Liverpool 2021 have a number of players who seem to play almost every game. I wonder if Klopp made any change to his training and recovery methods since 2016.

    Genuine question.

Gordon is a good shot stopper but not very good with his feet. He couldn’t play with us now, due to that. I think Hart is a better all-round keeper and while he’s not brilliant on the deck, he’s definitely improved since the start of the season.

  20. Craig Gordon is a very good goalkeeper, the fact that he now plays for Hearts shows him up more, as unlike Celtic, Hearts don’t have as much of the ball and therefore Craig is called on far more often than he was when with us. So he gets noticed more, but he is a good shot-stopper, but he does have the odd lapse, again, with Celtic, because we had most of the play, these few and far between but he did have them, por cierto

Leitch (sp) has already conceded that the 500 hasn’t came from any scientific research, time for the SPL to question it.

    2. Craig Gordon

    3. Scott Bain

Forster changes his mind after loan deal and moves back to Southampton

Craig Gordon offered terms in position 2 because Celtic wanted a new keeper and went £4M on

Vassilas Barkas. Gordon wanted to play and moved on for first team guarantee.

Turn the clock back have the benefit of hindsight and Gordon would have been re- established as top keeper. By all means slag Celtic for ‘scouting’ Barkas but we wanted better than Craig Gordon at the time.
