Jota, the hamstring and the contract

231

It has been five weeks since Jota pulled up clenching his left hamstring against Hearts.  The intervening period has been busy for Celtic, six wins, one of which was the League Cup Final, and a draw, three signings and a double contagion of further hamstrings and illness, put thoughts of our Portuguese winger to the back of our minds.

Ange Postecoglou intimated his was the most severe of the many similar injuries sustained in December.  Initial hopes were that he would return after the winter break, which is far from sure as things stand.  The player has rested but not tested his injury yet.  He has had the equivalent of a close season on the sidelines and will have a corresponding ‘preseason’ recovery regime to get back to full fitness.  That starts after his injury is considered fixed.

Jota has been an irrefutable success since arriving on loan from Benfica in the summer.  He delivers goals, assists and the best at the club in transitioning defence into attack (what was known as an out ball, in old money).  Celtic are right to setup the process to confirm his permanent transfer, at a reported £6.5m, he is value.  Still, that hamstring.

Hamstrings are one of the most pernicious injuries a player can get.  They can inflict untold damage across many years.  Shaun Maloney was plagued for years, before eventually finding a way to train and play that protected his damaged muscle.

Get the deal with Benfica ready to sign, pending a fitness test as late in the season as possible.  If he does not play for an extended period without remission, we should not sign him.  If you want to maximise your potential as a club, there is no room for sentiment or wishful thinking.

Think i read or saw that LF tests pick up about 35% of infections not great but a starting point not all infected people have symptoms, PCRs are more accurate and allow scientists to genomic sequence the virus to detect mutations that we hear about we have had Alpha Delta and Omicron since this thing began.

Maybe there is a helpline/email contact you could use to answer your questions which will give you more certainty

  6. Absolute disgrace that our Hibs match will still be behind closed doors effectively despite England having no such ban and there being virtually no ICU patients with omicron in Scotland.

I am so pleased that no one I know has heard of one of those who have caught this bug who has had anything worse than mild manflu. I just wish the recently knighted medics had done their research properly before informing us of impending doom and encouraging further economic chaos.

Maybe my frustration is made worse knowing the crowds will come back just after rangers visit and empty pittodrie and before we go to a hostile tynecastle. No doubt we will see crowds fully restored in time for the 6 nations on 5th feb.

A lot can happen before the 17th, the 500 pulled out of thin air flies in the face of imposed rules to control this virus , it was made up. Hopefully behind the scenes the SPFL must be making representations to get this lifted on behalf of all clubs and for when the first league game is played.

Naturally England will have more than Scotland with this omicron variant. I doubt anyone who has had it is remotely concerned as they will have built up more antibodies and suffered virtually no real inconvenience. I know that was my 2 kids view.

We could of course take the other extreme and the Aussie view that we just close the borders and disrupt everyone’s way of life to keep it out.

    Iniquitousiv – interesting ….

    On a number of fronts?

Significant that Everton’s official Twitter account outlines the fees …

    … and so quickly.

I’d suggest this indicates they are chastened by the negative reaction to the ludicrous suggestion they’ve bought a boy with almost no experience for up to £25.5m.

(had to be higher than Tierney – that’s how these clowns work).

The fees Everton report (for both full backs) actually make sense.

Rarely do EPL clubs splash out big in January for someone who isn’t a “Wow”

Everton are in no position to “splash”.

Operating losses in the last 10 year’s total £408m !!!

(Only Man City, Chelsea & Villa lost more)

Lowish cost, lowish risk boot up the arse for underperforming full backs (Coleman and Digne).

Final points I’ll make about this transfer fee nonsense.

General observation : exact same M.O. used by Murray.

“We were so tough in negotiations the other side wilted and caved in. We arra peepul”

    BS then.

    BS now.

    But they swallow it.

Specific point for anyone dumb enough to still believe the add-ons stuff.

50-game payment triggers are a long game of chance.

An EPL season is 38 matches.

Everton last qualified for Europe 5 years ago.

EPL teams do not play first team in the Carabao Cup ties before Christmas (risk to EPL status for bottom 14 / European progression for top 6 .. too great).

Everton haven’t reached the semifinal of the FA Cup since 2016.

    So ….

If Patterson plays every single league game and 4 FA Cup ties to quarter final

    – doesn’t get injured

    – doesn’t get suspended

    – doesn’t lose form

    – isn’t rotated

He’ll play a probable maximum of 42 games in a season.

BTW – there will be SOMEONE still be at Everton now who remembers the games oldco played with them with Michael Ball !

    A punt?

Sevco were offered £6m in standard instalments (1st of £2.4m).

Couldn’t afford it so negotiated £4.5m payment in full.

  19. Can we try to be as grown up and balanced in our criticisms and praise for handling of the Covid crisis.

The Uighurs in China and the Houthi in Yemen are far from astounded at the “loss of freedom” involved in being asked to wear a mask or to join in an innoculation programme to reduce the threat of a disease. They would not give you an entrant’s form for the “Opressed of the Year” competition.

Similarly, no one ever said the Omicron variant was going to be more deadly than the previous strain. What they did say was :-

    a) at the beginning, they did not know how it was going to be but they needed to prepare quickly with serious measures for it because it is better to be safe than sorry, and

    b) Very quickly they were learning from S. Africa and elsewhere that this variant was much more likely to spread quickly but much less likely to cause as much significant harm as previous strains. This is good news and should result in relaxations of restrictions as we saw today

What they have never said was

    It’s only a cold

    Nobody gets hospitalised from it

Nobody goes into ICU from it

    Mobody dies from it

These types of statement are only coming from Facebook via Trunp and Putin allies and being spread by Susceptible Sadies, Gullible Gussies and Paranoid Plonkers.

The danger from the milder but more spreadable strain of Omicron is that too many people are forced to isolate for too long that hospitals and services become overwhelmed and cannot function. A milder strain that more people catch can be as socially and economically harmful as a deadlier strain that effects fewer people. Its only advantage is that there will be fewer deaths.

This is the info that has been out there dor some time from serious commentators. I despair that this is becoming a culture wars split as it was in the USA. When Boris says something stupid or contradictory, the scientists in the room tell people the truth. When Trump told the Insurrectionist Crowd to drink bleach, the look on the female doctor’s face told us a lot but she didn’t contradict him verbally as he deserved.

However we play this pandemic, total lockdown and authoritarianism, balnced approaches between continuing economic activity and reducing deaths to a minimum, or a free for all that allows us to kill off the elderly and the compromised whilst the greedy selfish thrive, there is a cost to be paid.

Sadly, the maverick politicians, Trump and Johnson, have lost all credibility with their vaccilations between “it will all be alright”, followed by panic measures, and the utter utter stupidity of proclaiming Freedom Day, when they knew this was going to revisit us.

Even Sturgeon, who was much more sensible and guarded has made the mistake of wanting to be seen to be different from the English in her approach, which workd well when they are making mistakes but not so much when they stumble onto a reasonable path.

I despair that we cannot walk a middle path anymore but have to chose sides. We can reduce the more serious limitations on our lifestyle and earnings if we are willing to undergo small changes in our lifestyle. Regular sanitation of yourself and contact surfaces and purchased products, observing social distance measures, and mask wearing in indoor spaces, play a part way in reducing risks. Intermittent lockdowns and increased restrictions for new variants also need to be considered and respected. The medical staf advising you to do this are more knowledgeable and better trained than you and I. They have no desire to do you harm, to worship Bill Gates or any New World Order, or to introduce fascism by stealth.

Now, those idiots promoting misinformation that they know to be false , I think they are more attracted to the right wing ideology of fascism.

P.S. It should not be necessary to say so but this is not directed at any individuals on here. It is fine to be sceptical, but not cynical, and to express doubts. But please, any talk of enslavement or scientists being in conspiracy is just too pitiful and childish a use of words. We need a more grown up dialogue ir we will all be dressing up as Shamen with Buffalo headgear in the near future

  21. Barkas is never getting a contract like this Again,

    Weird.

Barkas may well be in oor Goalie Seat and we are pinning hopes on the Bhoy…. When Joe, Scott & Connor urnae backing up.

I thought he was excellent with the Ba’ @ his feet Last game, it’s not a good fit so hopefully deals are being done.

Ange gave all the regulars in his Team Cracking Hugs. Noticable the Barkas hug.

    No feeling there.

Best for all – even if Celtic have to pay a bigger than normal in fee loan fee wages wise for a 5M Goalie to go on loan that they dae that. I doubt he’d Save a shot on target in the coming weeks.

I’d be hoping Connor would be kicking on. and making Himself Joe’s understudy.

Ange has had the kitchen sink LAUNCHED @ him and he is doing the Most Remarkable Things.

2 Mair Signings of Substance and we, IMO, will dae OK in Europe & Scotland.

Scotland has the “Mib Money Factor” so we are more likely to win this Inaugual Conference League than the SPFL – HUNBELIEVABLE.

    Why didnae we Finish them?

  22. The fee agreed between ourselves and any of our loan players clubs won’t be the biggest stumbling block.

That’ll be in the contract, we still.need to convince the player and agree personal terms.

Jota pre injury was flying let’s hope he doesn’t get his head turned by riches elsewhere.

  23. Bada, There was a time I rejoiced when an Irish bhoy signed for Celtic, now it gives me the fear.

It really has been a graveyard for us,

Kenny is only 18 shows a lot of promise, but he will be on the B Panel, competing with Joey Dawson, Owen Moffat, Rocco Vata etc trying to force his way into the first team squad,

  24. INIQUITOUSIV on 5TH JANUARY 2022 8:43 PM

    That’s the fantasy football fee.

We really need to stop looking over the fence at them, their support are ripping the p*sh out of comments from our support to them and everton.

    It really doesn’t look good.

As I said previously let’s concentrate on what WE are doing and get behind Ange.

He might come up short this season due to the mess he picked up in the summer but he is ahead of where I expected him to be.

Forget what they are doing THATLL eat then up more.

Win the league this season would be one of the sweetest yet.

Whether or not it ends up catastrophic for them ? Who cares .
