Jozo, medicals and a midfielder

414

Reports that Jozo Simunovic may have failed his medial (not always a euphemism for rejecting a derisory contract offer) at Torino come as little surprise, but will be a distraction to Celtic as they had backfill offers ready to move. The player is fit, but will need to put a season together which demonstrates this beyond all doubt.

Some insight into what failing a medical can sometimes mean might be useful:

Medicals provide an overview of a player’s condition.  When an issue appears, as will often happen by default for a previously injured player, an alert is raised.  The buying club can then instruct a more detailed examination of the player.  Celtic occasionally send players to London for a second examination for this purpose.   Even then, with the best medical opinion money can buy, you are presented with no more than an opinion.

Whatever the first or second examination determines, the information is presented to the club, who have a decision to make.  If the player’s VO2 Max isn’t where it should be, but he’s not trained for six months, they might be prepared to take the chance.  Clubs seldom get a scan which reveals something as decisive as a piece of bone hanging off.  An evidence based but subjective view is taken.  Turino may be here right now.

The Jozo situation is symptomatic of the problems and opportunities of deadline day. If Jozo stays, another player, his club and agent, will only now be looking for an alternative move if Celtic is no longer an option. That will seriously annoy those concerned but this is the nature of the day, and creates opportunities for others.

Our principle target to add to the squad (not to swap like-for-like) is a midfielder. We’ve been working on this for a while but the nature of the target is such that there can be no guarantees, even at this stage.

What I can repeat is that despite what has again been reported (and at the risk of standing on a lonely ledge), Celtic have no idea where the James McCarthy story came from. It didn’t come from them and there is nothing in it.

Stay tuned!

OK,which is it?.Either BR is in charge or PL is.We have been hearing that BR is the man,PL has been told to stand down, now when it looks as though we might be struggling to get someone in,its PLs fault again.

Get a grip.BR is the man.He knows who he wants. The problem is not with him or PL,its with the very thing we are talking about.Getting the player to come to Celtic. The right player for BR.Not easy at all

There’s been a lot of Hootenanny’s on here recently! :-)

  7. If the window closed right now with Jozo still here I’d be fairly happy with how things are. I’d have no hope or ambition of anything other than 4th place in the CL which isn’t what ideally I’d want to feel but after a couple of years out I’d just about accept it… this year… and only if it was clear we were building a team for the future.

In an ideal world we’d sign Wanyama’s twin (not his actual one but you know what I mean) and offload some fringe players and I don’t think we could ask for much more than that. A big heid-the-baw striker would be useful at times but I don’t see us aiming to play that way so it’s unlikely.

Don’t know if there’s any truth to the rumours that Jozo is unhappy and/or is a big of an erse. Hopefully not if he is staying as he is one who we all had high hopes for… if he can stay fit.

I’m afraid I agree with TB here. We would, as you said, get a lot of coverage initially but that would soon die away.

Then what? We wouldn’t be getting the tv coverage we get now, and we’d lose access to the one thing that gives us worldwide coverage. I don’t see Eng Div 5 being more attractive to sponsors than the SPFL Premiership.

Would there not be a mechanism for us sending a reserve team (Celtic Colts) to England for a few season then transferring over as they move up the leagues?

  17. Are we going to get shot of Boyata? that would be positve news. O’Connell will hopefully get plenty of time when Kolo needs a rest

  18. To be honest, I would like a bit more competition at central midfield.

McCarthy would have been ideal but I can see why it won’t happen. Normally, I’m the cynical type but James Forrest really got my hopes up on that one.

We got the RB we needed.

I’m happy with what we have now. I’d only get excited for a Hernanes or McCarthy which both seem like long shots.

    Totally agree.

I have NEVER advocated that Celtic should join a re-vamped English/British League.

What I have advocated is that the club join a future Pan-European League. It WILL come, it’s just a question of when. And when it does happen I would hope that we are in a position to take our rightful place in such a set-up.

We just need to bide our time, however unpalatable that might seem to some.

You may recall that last year I decided to take part in the Celtic Charity Foundation Charity Sleepout.

Well I will be taking part again this year on 12th November as part of the foundation’s Christmas Appeal – however the charity sleepout and helping the homeless is of particular interest to me.

Firstly because I became interested in the homeless issue whilst at University when completing a project surrounding the cause and effect of the homeless persons act 1977 during which I was horrified to find how many people were officially homeless; how many were not officially homeless because they were living in temporary accommodation and how absolutely bloddy awful that accommodation was.

Most people become homeless because of the break up of a relationship or because they are evicted by a bank, buikding society or a landlord.

Many become homeless with the intention that it will be for a night or two which then drifts into a week, then a month then ………… well it could be for a long time.

The very fact you become homeless makes it difficult to get back on the grid and the longer you are homeless (officially or unofficially) the harder it gets.

Shelter is saying that today homelessness is on the rise with more and more people facing the problem.

The homeless include kids and families who just have no permanent accommodation and have no certainty in their lives. It is not just those you see begging in the street either. Many people who are homeless have low paid jobs, cannot get benefits and despite holding down one or maybe two jobs just fail to be able to afford accommodation.

For the really desperate and alone, when you pass and say hello to a homeless person that might just be the only humnan contact they have that day.

The Celtic Charity Foundation work with people like the Simon Centre, The Invisibles and the Seaman’s Mission among others.

The foundation has arranged food, shelter, clothing, blankets, sleeping bags and other support in the past but it all takes money so I am trying to raise a few quid for this.

The second reason for doing this is that due to my duff knees (one of which is soon to face the surgeon) I can’t run, swim, peddle or climb for charity so in the absence of any charity storytelling, talking or drinking events I am somewhat limited on the fundraising event front.

If you want to support me then my donation page can be found here:

    https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/jamesmcginley2

Hamilton Tim and The Mynx and also doing the sleepout so if you have supported them there is no need to support me as well, and if you know anyone else who is also doing the sleepout, then please support them as it is the collective effort that counts.

However, we can make a real difference to people this winter with this and the time to start making that difference is now.

If anyone has any other fund raising ideas that don’t involve being Sir Edmund Hillary, Brendan Forster or Bradley Wiggins then please let me know.

    Thanks for reading.
