Jozo, medicals and a midfielder

414

Reports that Jozo Simunovic may have failed his medial (not always a euphemism for rejecting a derisory contract offer) at Torino come as little surprise, but will be a distraction to Celtic as they had backfill offers ready to move. The player is fit, but will need to put a season together which demonstrates this beyond all doubt.

Some insight into what failing a medical can sometimes mean might be useful:

Medicals provide an overview of a player’s condition.  When an issue appears, as will often happen by default for a previously injured player, an alert is raised.  The buying club can then instruct a more detailed examination of the player.  Celtic occasionally send players to London for a second examination for this purpose.   Even then, with the best medical opinion money can buy, you are presented with no more than an opinion.

Whatever the first or second examination determines, the information is presented to the club, who have a decision to make.  If the player’s VO2 Max isn’t where it should be, but he’s not trained for six months, they might be prepared to take the chance.  Clubs seldom get a scan which reveals something as decisive as a piece of bone hanging off.  An evidence based but subjective view is taken.  Turino may be here right now.

The Jozo situation is symptomatic of the problems and opportunities of deadline day. If Jozo stays, another player, his club and agent, will only now be looking for an alternative move if Celtic is no longer an option. That will seriously annoy those concerned but this is the nature of the day, and creates opportunities for others.

Our principle target to add to the squad (not to swap like-for-like) is a midfielder. We’ve been working on this for a while but the nature of the target is such that there can be no guarantees, even at this stage.

What I can repeat is that despite what has again been reported (and at the risk of standing on a lonely ledge), Celtic have no idea where the James McCarthy story came from. It didn’t come from them and there is nothing in it.

Stay tuned!

I’ve just read that secco statement. They are still alleging their players were assaulted!!! WTF??

The hubris and accusations are unbelievable… And their closing line is extremely inflammatory.

  3. Its a shame we appear to be not doing any business tonight…however. My own best analogy of the Rangers ‘Sendeross deal’ is one from my youth and pre-social media. That fat or old bird who you know from the nightclub that is hanging around from opening time. You say hello and that but keep it nice and cordial, therefore keeping your options open for a far better prospect that evening…..but of course come chucking out time and after you have even exhausted the kebab shop options available you decide to take up her services.

Best holding fire until you see what happens or you might need to eat your words, although I agree that in the past our transfer policy has been the cheap options.

There is no reason we can’t push the boat out for a forward passing midfielder that we have been crying out for.

I’m seeing a photo on Twitter which claims to show McCarthy entering the front door at parkhead? Maybe not over yet!

With so many more avenues for the truth to come out it is enlightening times mate

See they already have a story out about Sendoras baptism and aiming for us. No doubt this pre cooked story was kept warm for today.

On the plus side the player Sendoras, will never have to sign such a complicated one year deal again !

RANGERS’ Directors are shocked at the charges issued by the Scottish FA’s Compliance Officer in the wake of the pitch invasion at the end of the Scottish Cup final last May.

It is alarming that the governance of Scottish football is so lacking that it is impossible for the Scottish FA to guarantee the safety of footballers at the country’s showpiece event. The SFA is either unwilling or is powerless when it comes to taking the appropriate punitive action against the offenders.

A number of Rangers players were assaulted by Hibernian supporters in broad daylight on the Hampden surface and a repeat of this must be avoided at all costs. That should have been the priority of the SFA. Yet, the governing body insists it is not within its remit to issue any charges let alone punishments for such violent and dangerous misconduct. Instead of player and supporter safety they have placed all their emphasis and importance on the monetary value of a set of goalposts, pieces of turf, and advertising boards.

Rangers Directors will take time to consider an appropriate and more comprehensive response to redress our grievances but for the moment the board fully endorses the incredulity and anger of all Rangers supporters.

you mentironed Ajer earlier, I think his position is midfield but Brendan tried him at the back in pre-season prior to getting Toure in and some others fit

  10. I know Senderos was hanging off signing in case anyone, i mean anyone came in for him and they have him gunning (ahem) for us already.

I saw a funny earlier which said something along the lines of ” Leigh Griffiths, Scott Sinclair, Patrick Roberts, James Forrest and Moussa Bembele all welcome Philip Senderos to rangers” lol

Easy meat, He was poor at his peak, he must be brutal now with zero interest at 31, oooft

  12. My friends in Celtic,

Yes the last day of the transfer market is always hectic.

Some posters want us to splash the cash we will be due when payouts take place.

Let’s sign big money deals because they must be good. Why ? Because they are big money of course.

Are we stronger today , compared to a month ago. ? If we are its Brendan’s influence. If we are not , no excuse ,it’s the hand of the dreaded PL.

A bad deal is a bad deal ,no matter what day of the year it is.

Andy Carroll ; a last minute mega deal to appease fans. How has that worked out? The physio’s say yeah, the punters say nay.

It’s all a bit silly now . Never be afraid to look or act silly. But be reasonable.

    Hail, Hail.

To be fair anywhere Ajer played pre season he looked competent. Think he is a cracking prospect.

As a Defensive mid i’d try him or Erik. We have lots of CB cover even if Jozo goes.

Brendan maybe thinks we have good midfield there but its finding the right combination .For me Rogic is the only one. Brown looked good up until last week and looked tired in both games last week and bitton is too slow. Armstrong not adapted well since Brendan has came in, Mcgregor drops out of games quicker than bitton. We need someone in and I hope Brendan thinks that as well.

    Fingers crossed for today.

Not sure what that means for McCarthy, possibly they’ll want a fee for a permanent move

  19. We seem to be running it to the wire tonight.

Was hoping to see more of the deadwood mocked out.

Currently it is not a case of Klingons on the starboard bow.

It is Klingons in the middle of the defence, left mid, right mid and up front.

As things stand I think that KA is going to have to grow up PDQ to get our CL campaign half way credible. Looking damage limitation away from home and a crowd inspired wave of emotion to try and get some points at home.

I think we are a bit light in MF for a number of reasons.

We do not have a VW class DM at any level — squad / U20 / youths.

We do not have a go to guy to police the MF when and I’d a MIB inspired / protected Clogger starts to hand it out when we are on our travels — not pretty and not really in the Corinthean ethos of the game but sometimes needs must as in be prepared.

Interesting to see if KA is asked to step up?

Interesting to see if SB and NB can roll back the years and play as a unit?
