Jozo, medicals and a midfielder

414

Reports that Jozo Simunovic may have failed his medial (not always a euphemism for rejecting a derisory contract offer) at Torino come as little surprise, but will be a distraction to Celtic as they had backfill offers ready to move. The player is fit, but will need to put a season together which demonstrates this beyond all doubt.

Some insight into what failing a medical can sometimes mean might be useful:

Medicals provide an overview of a player’s condition.  When an issue appears, as will often happen by default for a previously injured player, an alert is raised.  The buying club can then instruct a more detailed examination of the player.  Celtic occasionally send players to London for a second examination for this purpose.   Even then, with the best medical opinion money can buy, you are presented with no more than an opinion.

Whatever the first or second examination determines, the information is presented to the club, who have a decision to make.  If the player’s VO2 Max isn’t where it should be, but he’s not trained for six months, they might be prepared to take the chance.  Clubs seldom get a scan which reveals something as decisive as a piece of bone hanging off.  An evidence based but subjective view is taken.  Turino may be here right now.

The Jozo situation is symptomatic of the problems and opportunities of deadline day. If Jozo stays, another player, his club and agent, will only now be looking for an alternative move if Celtic is no longer an option. That will seriously annoy those concerned but this is the nature of the day, and creates opportunities for others.

Our principle target to add to the squad (not to swap like-for-like) is a midfielder. We’ve been working on this for a while but the nature of the target is such that there can be no guarantees, even at this stage.

What I can repeat is that despite what has again been reported (and at the risk of standing on a lonely ledge), Celtic have no idea where the James McCarthy story came from. It didn’t come from them and there is nothing in it.

Stay tuned!

Thetimreaper – I just read it too. What an utter embarrassment, complete disgrace and demonstrably untrue statement.

It is also dangerous. The last line ‘endorsing’ their supporters anger and outrage is tantamount to encouraging public disorder.

This is what happens when clubs play to the gallery.

I say clubs – there is only one club that does it. Celtic supporters have paid with their lives for the rage of those who follow Ibrox based teams. What they see as an ‘old firm’ game on the horizon and they come out with this paranoid, dangerous deflection? In years gone by we’ve seen tensions cranked up and we saw the results. I’m fearful for what may happen on 10th September off the pitch.

They should be taken to task for this.

    But they won’t be.

What is so ridiculous about it is the fact that the only people who can punish the fans who allegedly assaulted Rangers players are Police Scotland and the Justice System (some of them already have been jailed). The SFA have no powers to act on it!

Over and above all that, no evidence of assault has been forthcoming and any allegations of assault have been denied by players’ families!

  2. From KDS

Chris Millar (st Johnstone) is currently on Clyde SSB and he just said he is mutual friends with one of Mccarthys and he is desperate to come. Sounded pretty convincing.

  3. Assuming we reach the midnight hour with no further action vis-a-vis the midfield ( I still cling to some hope ) the following cannot be trotted out as the season evolves :

    – injury excuses

    – our midfield are unable to retain possession

    – our midfield have a soft centre

    – our midfield are one paced

    – our midfield lack legs and overall stamina.

Despite our comparative wealth we are unable to sign a dynamic midfield player. I only hope it doesn’t come back to bite us on the backside. Still a few hours but I am not hopeful.

The DR always lies about Sevco too, but in a different sort of way.

Let’s face it, even failing to call them by their proper name is a lie.

  5. Like most here I would love a Wanyama type midfielder, but we have a big squad (too big) we have plenty of Development Players, to go out now in a panic and buy the wrong guy would be a disaster.

I don’t think a player in or not will make a lot of difference to our Champions League prospects,

I’m happy to see bhoys like Rogic responding to Brendan and growing into big players.

There are still a few on the books that are either not good enough or are past their best & yes we do need 2 or 3 quality buys but it will probably take 3 windows before Brendan has the desired squad.

Unfortunately we just need to be patient.

Interesting that the Mulgrew devotees have to go back almost 5 years for a contribution to cite in his defence.

I am with Joe above. By all accounts Mulgrew was the chief mutineer against Deila who, regardless of his failings, was entitled to the respect of his charges. He did not deserve the humiliation of a player walking off the park claiming injury.

The club is bigger than any man. While that applies to Ronny Deila, it also most certainly applies to Mulgrew.

My views on him are well known on here. I’m delighted he’s away and would hope that at some time in the future he’s able to reflect on how his own behaviour contributed to his departure.

Yes they have always lied but now it seems they lie with confidence

No ones really taking them on in their own business and that makes them feel invincible. Might be time for the punters to ask them questions with the help from hired professionals in the media.

Bet they would not like that. the people asking the questions and setting the agenda.

  9. As far as signing a quality midfielder goes, a lot of those “in the know” are saying work is ongoing.

However, many posters on here seem to think it’s like buying a rabbit in the pet shop: the wean looks in the cage and says “Ah want that yin daddy” and it’s lifted out and purchased.

It’s a complex scenario and if the 2 clubs (managers, bean counters, doctor), the player (and his missus), and the agent aren’t all happy and in agreement, it disnae happen!

It’s also a matter of getting the right guy in, not just another midfielder (a la Ronny D). If it’s not right, then ditch the idea and try again in January.

Your right mate, We live in enlightened times, At least with sites like this and forums and blogs the truth is coming out now.

Everything that has went on in the last 4 years has only came out because of social media, if it was down to the paper’s we would still just be paranoid tims like our dads and grandads were.

The future is catching up with even this wee backwards bigoted country.

Farewell Charlie, had a lot of time for you until you walked off the pitch in a huff. Pathetic and shameful wearing the hoops and doing that. Should never have had the chance to wear that sacred jersey again. Maybe he will enjoy his new shirt better…..

Does anyone think that Senderdross would have signed a 48 week deal with sevco if he had any other viable offer .

    Me neither

Moocher Mulgrew the Mutineer was a good servant to Celtic. There’s no pleasing some folks

  17. I watched the BBC programme on the 80s in Scottish Football, and even back then, they invaded Pittodrie and wrecked the park, protecting their players obviously…

  18. onenightinlisbon on

How is it possible to excuse a player wearing the hoops walking off the pitch? People on here crucify the likes of Efe for his performances but at least he gives 100%. Wonder what would be said about him if he did a Charlie?

  19. weebobbycollins on

Signing Scott Sinclair and Kolo Toure was an unnecessary provocation on the part of the taigs…it will be their fault if there is trouble at the old firm game…effin’ bead rattlers…

  20. Still no deal in sight between Celtic and Torino for Jozo Simunovic, apparently.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere isnae going to Roma. Instead he’s decided to go to Bournemouth.

    He loves the seaside.
