Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

  1. We don’t need a scrapper this time.

    We need a thinker.

We need a strategist who knows how to get the best out of young players.

We need a guy who has experience of taking a club a distance in Europe with limited resources.

I know the very chap and he can handle a scrap if necessary.

    What is Neil Lennon doing?

  2. Always thought the appointment of Roy Keane would suit Roy Keane more than it would suit Celtic.

MON breaking cover on the story last week seemed well orchestrated.

Perhaps to pressurise a Davie Moyes type candidate waiting on a Premiership vacancy?

  4. My friends in Celtic,

Contrary to what many of us think, we just do not know all the facts regarding our managerial hunt.

With that in mind I think I will believe, until proven otherwise, roy croppie’s theory about RK.

  8. The appointment of a new manager, assistant and coaching team is hugely important but getting football people, ie ex player/manager in charge of all footballing matters is more important in the long term. No more de facto directors of football, accountants and scouts, get someone qualified in to do the job properly. The rest will fall in line once this happens,

  12. Keane would have had to give up both his Ireland salary and the ITV pundit money. In return he’d have got a moderate salary and, one hopes, some generous, but uncertain bonuses linked to trophies and European progress. Also, possibly a percentage of transfer income (that’s how you renconcile yourself to the loss of your best players).

I still think our best bet is a coach from a low-rent European league, with a transfer-specialising colleague. Also, I have a clear mental image of Desmond chatting to Martin O’Neill on a golf course, or was it in a smart hotel beside an expensive Irish golf course, before the great man got the appointment, and then a similar encounter with Wee Gordon before HE got the job. Both these very successful managers left on good terms and

Neil was not the tactically astute coach of reputation.

One good season in Europe was not enough and realistically it was done with backs to the wall and bravery over brilliant tactical strategy.

Our constant failure in domestic cups and often turgid performances were down to Neils limitations.

His refusal to use youth in the run in when league was won showed a lack of forward planning.

He did a good job for us but his time was up.

  17. (whoops!) … good terms and are now occupying less than full-time jobs. A phone call and a conference now and then to steer the new guy through the muddy waters of Scottish football?

  18. Prevarication is the thief of time.

Every day nannying about looking for a manager/coach or whatever is a day nearer playing the ‘we can’t be expected to throw money at a manager just in the door’ card.

  19. Oh, it’s just struck me that any time I’m not on the blog – it’s not because I’ve chosen not to come on, or have other commitments or have no time – it’s because I’ve ‘snubbed’ it.

I’ve also ‘snubbed’ cycling round ‘strathy’ twice in the last week. And I’ve also ‘snubbed’ eating more fruit.

Made no comment about NL’s abilities. In fact in the past have questioned his cup tie managerial skills here.

Point I was making was that his sudden, unexplained departure has caught DD and PL on the hop.

Ifv they knew he was going and did nothing to find a successor then they were guilty of negligence.

It is my belief that Celtic supporters require a leader with charisma as well as managerial ability, one can’t go without the other. . Think about it.

    Mowbray zilch charisma.

Mr Venglos, looked like zilch but more likely he was affected by language problems.

Barnes. Annoying charisma, a little like Tony Bliar. No managerial ability.

Mr Clarke, good coach and nice man as he may well be, has the charisma of a used carpet salesman. Would you pay to watch something which a used carpet salesman creates?

    I see

Mon’s crafty plan to ease Keane out of the Ireland camp has backfired.

All the talk about him probably accepting the job came from Dublin, fired by O’Neil’s revelation that DD had held. ” informal” talks with RK.

Celtic said nothing other than they had a list of candidates, of whom Keane was one.

Why would MON want him out?

Because, since he was appointed as assistant manager, he has become the story and a distraction from the team.

Keane is not a stupid man. He realises that walking out on the FAI once, was a big mistake. To do it twice, would finish him in his homeland.

No hyperbole there but IMO a decent take on it

    fan-a-tic:

His team performed well beyond expectations in reaching the last 16 from that group. That team’s spine was removed and he did exceptionally well to get Celtic back into the group stages. On balance I think his European record, in context, was very good. He won the league as expected. I’ll forgive him the odd cup slip-up. We could, and probably will, do a whole lot worse…

Haven’t read back, but I would wager the blog is in a happy place.

    Back to square one then.

I still think the club should go foreign, always have.

Problem is finance, we pay a pittance in comparison to england, and any incoming manager will have little funds for players in, severely restricts our scope.

Coyle it is then, with Houston as his number two.

  28. West Wales

    Spot on.

We are in a much stronger position now than when Neil took over. Average age of squad, youth players ready to come through and squad value is vastly improved.

  29. This is turning out to be a bit of a crossroads for Celtic.

I had hoped Lennon would be Celtic manager for next 10 years

1 because he was doing a good job

2 Celtic to the core when we lost he felt it as much as us

3 didn’t think there were a better man waiting in wings to take over.

The fact that the Celtic job isn’t good enough for die hard Celtic man in Lennon is a real kick in the nuts to all Celtic fans.

I think it is time to go foreign. For someone whom Celtic would be a step up.

Forget England when teams bottom of the pile can get £50m for turning up which is greater than Celtic’s entire turnover (excluding CL) we are wasting our time searching down there.

    Have to respectfully disagree.

The odd cup performances were the norm.

As i said praise for the brave and back to the walls performances in the group stages.

Against Juventus and a very poor Milan side he was tactically poor.

The scraping through against Effingsborg and Karagandy were lucky.
