Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  1. Roy Keane has “asked not to be considered” for the vacant managerial position at Scottish champions Celtic.

The Republic of Ireland assistant manager has ruled himself out of the running to replace Neil Lennon, preferring to continue his work alongside Martin O’Neill.

Dermot Desmond, the Hoops majority shareholder, held talks with the former Manchester United skipper last week but it is understood the discussions did not get as far as a formal job offer.

A source close to the club told Press Association Sport: “Roy was not offered the job – no-one has been offered it yet.

“But he has ruled himself out and asked not to be considered for the position.”

  2. You can overdo talk about the budget. We have less money but other advantages.

Whilst looking back over Steve Clarkes record I had a look through the West Brom squad:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.#First_team_squad

Now WBA may have £30m of Sky money to spend every year but the best players in that team are Dorrans and Morrison. At Celtic he will have a back four of Lustig, Ambrose, VVD, and Izzy (and Matthews as backup) – 4 seasoned first pick internationals for strong footballing nations and Englands no 2 goalie behind them.

They’re at Celtic because of clever scouting and because they knew they could raise their profile, play CL football, and probably move up at some point. Steve Clarke would probably have to have blown all the Sky money to get to half of them to come to WBA.

We definitely have problems with the silly money EPL teams spend on average players or even good players for their bench. Heaven knows we have struggled to buy a proven striker. But we have a strategy that can work of whoever comes in – if he’s smart enough.

    BSR,

I would not consider you to hold the default position.

I’m sure that I have read complimentary stuff from you, re the club.

We are in the same position regarding manager recruitment as we are for players.

We are not in the top financial league in Britain, never mind Europe.

Celtic are a great club in our minds and our history is laudable, but, through no fault of our own, we have fallen from Grace.

You know all the reasons….and they begin with SKY.

Very few Celtic fans, I reckon, would have been happy with Keane in charge. I would be one of them, but I wouldn’t come on to a blog and whine about it, again, bearing in mind our hiring limitations.

As with players, we may have to try and unearth a managerial diamond in the rough.

You know you will renew your ST, even if it only to ensure the safety and security of the gazebo!!

    Don’t despair my friend,

  6. Delighted that Roy will not be our new manager, however annoyed with myself for swallowing what I think was a media induced frenzy, with hindsight ‘it was just discussions’, we’ll hear it when we hear it…..

I don’t think Moyes would take the drop from managing the English champions to Scottish, he will still fancy his chances at picking up a mid range EPL or decent level European job. I don’t believe it is a bad thing for us, his record against ‘big’ teams has never been great, and we need a manager who is capable of being innovative and organised against CL level teams, day to day stuff should take care of itself for the next few years…..

My choice would be Lambert, Mackay and then Clarke. I would not be against seeing either John Collins or Jackie McNamara in a supporting role although I don’t know if Jackie would ‘drop’ given that his star has been rising, cup final excepting, in recent times.

I am not in the ‘knock PL’ camp at all and trust that he, along with our owners are doing their damnedest to bring in the right man for the job. We are a well run club and while I’d love us to sign top drawer, therein lies the path to ruin. (C) Diedco 2012.

Not overly fussed it’s not Keane but the question is why has he withdrawn himself from being considered?

    Perhaps –

He wasn’t offered enough of a salary?

Maybe he wanted more say on player acquisitions and wasn’t happy being a yes man?

Or could it have been possible prospect of losing Fraser, Virgil and James and or not being offered a decent transfer budget?

Again I’m not overly fussed about it not being Keane but there has to be a reason other than he wants to stay as MON’s number 2, to why he knocked the job back?

    HH!

  10. Ellboy – I am Neil Lennon, YNWA.

I was amazed Keane took a position of number 2 and this may shine some light on his decision not be considered today. Perhaps he is happy and settled in his role as a number 2 and he has doubts about his ability to lead Celtic.

Steve Clark did well when his team contained a high quality striker and struggled when it didn’t.

I think Vmhan’s suggestion that a change of strategy is as important as a change of manager is very valid.

Keane meant investment and Celtic have clearly rejected that idea. This is not a cause for celebration in my humble opinion…

Perhaps! Though has Roy Keane ever given you the impression he lacks confidence in his own ability?

In my opinion he’s one of the most big headed and sure minded personalities ever to be associated with the game. For that reason I can’t see him knocking the job back through his own lack confidence. Though a lack of confidence in not being in full control of first team affairs or a lack of confidence of not being afforded the proper tools (players/budget). This would make more sense to me and because of this it’s quite worrying as to who may eventually get the job.

  22. Best suggestion I heard about why Keano ‘rejected’ us was on RTE1 this afternoon – he’ll get no praise for winning two titles in a row but he’d get the sack for failing to qualify for the CL two years in a row.

That’s the reality of the Celtic job.

Personally I think he might also have been less than amused at perhaps being informed he is not the only or preferred candidate and that Celtic have options. Dermot Desmond might be his golf buddy, but he ain’t Keano’s poodle.

  23. Ellboy – I am Neil Lennon, YNWA.

I take your point but it was his acceptance of a number 2 role-from an out and out leader-that surprised me. He’s an intelligent man who maybe felt he didn’t fit the role.

The sad thing is that we the paying public will probably never know…
