Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  10. We’ve been over this ground before, celtic being a well run plc we will not know who the next manager is before an announcement to the stock market. If we haven’t heard who the new manager is by the market opening on any given day we won’t hear it till the next morning at the earliest

    …………

That’s about what I was thinking but the board appear to have been surprised by Neil’s resignation.

I think Neil was unhappy with the strategic aims of Our club, he wanted more than our club could provide.

This is where the debate should be IMO of course

  12. The move to have preliminary talks with RK about the vacant managerial position at Celtic Park was Dennis O’Brien’s move.(minority/major shareholder – depending on which way you view it- but he has a big influence in what happens at Celtic FC & PLC)

After all, it is widely known and accepted that O’Brien funds RK’s position with the FAI, RK wasn’t sourced by MO’N but placed by O’Brien and the FAI’s requirement to keep him onside due to his financial support in many area of the sport in general. His ‘placement’ seems to have worked out well though and RK has gelled reasonably well with the coaching staff by all accounts.

Had a wee stomach flutter when story emerged that RK was not taking talks any further.

I hoped he could have been the man for us. Honestly, I can say I am disappointed RK has not taken it further, but remain hopeful we can attract a good standard of manager.

As I have said a few days ago I still would prefer Uwe Rosler despite him only being in his current post at Wigan for 6 months.

Of the other media listed targets, Steve Clarke would be a great appointment but I am very underwhelmed by the likes of MacKay, Owney, John Collins (ffs peeps) etc

Remember – There is nobody perfect for the job. Each of the candidates will have their flaws, it depends how much you want to focus on the flaws and not on the positives.

She told me she knew lots of things and unlike me she was good at keeping secrets and one thing she did know for sure is that I would be sleeping alone tonight with chat up lines like that and didnt I know a non story when I didnt see one.

‘The supporters’ website favoured by the Celtic hierarchy claimed that Keane had requested not to be considered for the vacancy as the directors reduced their shortlist of candidates, implying that scepticism from a section of the fan base concerning the suitability of the Irishman for the job in hand had not gone unnoticed.’

Now that Keane has ruled himself out after being a strong favourite, we can stop all the nonsense about “the bookies rarely get it wrong”

Sometimes you have to use your powers of reasoning to work out what’s going on. Not as easy as being spoon fed but occasionally more reliable.

  30. It’s amazing how many mental twists we can perform.

Most CQNrs have just had their very own Hugh Keevins-Artur Jorge moment.

We were fed disinformation and we ran with it. Now either the disinformation was that Roy Keane was coming or the disinformation was that Roy Keane turned it down or was never asked. One of these versions may be true but ,at least two, are definitely false.

My own view (and this is open to being checked) was that Roy Keane, if he came, would have to work within existing strategy and would be forced to be a non-chequebook manager, or we were about to go high profile in order to try to force or charm our way into a change of league set up.

I don’t believe that DD or PL or any power-broker at CP changed their mind because of fan views, that makes no sense and would be a bigger shock than KevJ posting accurate info. I am also more than slightly bemused by the smokescreen narrative. Of course, MON and RK would have been willing to play along with a ruse to help their old pal and their old club but they would also be wary about potential embarrassment to their current employers, the FAI, if this ran too long. If the ruse worked, we will be hearing of an appointment soon because the true candidate has been smoked out, has said yes, and the ruse is no longer needed.

However, if we do not appoint within 48 hours, could it be that all this game playing was ineffective and our candidate is still being coy or has said no.

I suspect we will never know.

I am reminded, however, that when Tony Mowbray was appointed, we had to dampen down the rumour that Owen Coyle had been asked first. Again, we were told that he was spoken to but was never offered the job. We can hide behind deniable plausibility just like any seasoned politician.

As always, as fans, we will have to await the outcome. We do not get to appoint the manager. If you want someone to excite the fans, get a better mascot. The manager’s job is to work with the players and the Board.
