Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Couldn’t believe it when I heard the news on Radio 1 news about an hour ago. Bullet dodged. Onwards and upwards. Good decision by the club and or Keane. I look forward to reading about it in Roys next book. I wonder how true his statement on not taking a pay cut for anyone was?

On to more realistic and more palatable choices that hopefully deliver European progress.

Just hope its not Owen Coyle…

Throw in Roy Keanes lack of football success and you need to be even more worried, that he didn’t want considered.

    sftb,

I believe the right way to appoint the manager is to present your candidates with the constraints of the job and then the benefits.

The constraints are the league and the budget, the need to sell players before you buy, the requirement to work within the structure, the need to work with the players from a list identified by scouts and put in place by those who hold the purse strings.

The benefits outside of those you don’t need a flashy presentation on are salary and opportunities. The first may seem to be a constraint.

If Roy Keane was part of the proper way to look for a manager then he may have walked away due to any of the constraints or low salary on offer. I hope that this is the case as i would feel sick for Neil Lennon if Roy was offered a carrot to take the post in the form of increased budget, more player control and or better salary.

I hope other more ambitious candidates are waiting in the wings.

RK now joins Coyle on the never to be considered again list. I wish them

no harm but if you snub Celtic you should not get a 2nd chance.

    *hmm Harry Hood, Anthony Stokes.

  10. TSD – Yes, Steve Clark was at Chelsea under 2 good managers, but we never really know how much influence he had. I suspect very little beyond day to day coordination of training etc. My point was more about his direct coaching capabilities and his ability to come up with a tactical gameplan that can help us do well in Europe. Also not sure he has the personality necessary to deal with life under the Glasgow spotlight.

If he does get the job, he will of course get my support but I’m not too excited at the prospect.

  11. Last time ah write a tribute poem, in anticipation of the new manager! (you’ll be upset to hear).

    I see

Mon’s crafty plan to ease Keane out of the Ireland camp has backfired.

All the talk about him probably accepting the job came from Dublin, fired by O’Neil’s revelation that DD had held. ” informal” talks with RK.

Celtic said nothing other than they had a list of candidates, of whom Keane was one.

Why would MON want him out?

Because, since he was appointed as assistant manager, he has become the story and a distraction from the team.

Keane is not a stupid man. He realises that walking out on the FAI once, was a big mistake. To do it twice, would finish him in his homeland.

    NB.

This opinion is no more or less credible than the crazy scenarios described by those ” Celtic” supporters whose default position is to criticise the club.

Did open with “Van! Darling! Its Ernesto darling” in my best showbizzy voice. It is a well kept secret but she is in the know. She was so not bothered and then she asked why I dont wear sharp suits anymore and did I know Roy Keane could have been a good shout but there wasnt not really much excitement from both sides. That was it really, didnt go as well as I’d hoped truth be told………..

We change of subject for a moment.

A pal of mine just posted on facebook a photo of a flyer his son was given at primary school in Morayshire.

The flyer is entitled Rangers Scoccer Schools and is an open letter to all kids, aged 7-16 advertising a 5 hour session of training with a Rangers coach, learning to play the Rangers way. Apparently the best performing kids will then be invited to train at Murray Park and do a half time demo at Ibrox in front of 50000 fans.

The cost of the 5 hours?

The train-crash that is the Celtic Manager selection process shouts loudly to me that Neil Lennon leaving was a bolt from the blue for the PLC.

The above smacks of sanity amongst the garbage that has been posted here recently.

When MON went WGS was appointed within days. It was later revealed that it had been a done deal for some time.

When Mowbray was sacked, NL was on site and more than willing.

My own view is that NL was alw3ays going to move on at some time, but something happened or did not happen that mede him pull the rug from under DD and PL.

It is time that our CE was asked to explain how under his stewardship Celtic have gone from a season book waiting list to what at best, will be a two thirds full stadium.

For me it is the result of relentless downsizing resulting in a diminishing quality product.

Although I simply can’t see it happening with Celtic, Hibs is the perfect example of what happens when you cannot see beyongd sell, sell, sell.

  18. Cannot see what advantage it would be to Celtic to “play a game” pretending to be interested in Roy Keane. Equally couldn’t see Keane “playing games” either. I know just as much as everyone else on here which is sweet FA. My guess is that Keane was offered the job but for some unknown reason turned it down. There are a myriad of reasons why he might have turned it down. It could have been personal terms, family considerations, wanting to stay with Irish job, lack of budget for new players. We can all have our guess if it amuses us but the main thing he is out of the running so lets forget about him and concentrate on who might get the job.

One area for improvement though is communication with fans at important times.

Now I know they cant say who they are speaking to and how negotiations are going but they could communicate general meesages that they intend to appoint in 1 week or that negotiations are going well and on plan.

    Poor communication costs season tickets..

  26. Paul, are you suggesting Celtic’s position on Keane was motivated by what fans writing on websites like this thought of him?

Sorry, I find that highly, highly, unlikely.

I have no idea myself what has gone on, but the idea that DD and PL would be swayed away from a candidate because a few people were against him flies in the face of everything we know about how both men operate. Listening to the fans about car parks and pies is one thing – recruitment of key personnel another thing entirely.

We are left with the following, broad, theories IMHO:

    1. Celtic screwed up: We wanted Keane, thought we had him, briefed the press as such, only for Keane to get cold feet at the last minute. We are now desperately scrambling about for an alternative.

    2. Keane was blowing his own trumpet: Yes, we talked to him. Yes, he was a contender. But Keane realised that he wasn’t going to get it and rather than suffer the humiliation, decided to “excuse himself from the running” first. Given Keane’s lowly position (number 2 to a middling national side), public rejection by Celtic would damage his already weak managerial reputation still further…

    3. It’s all a MON conspiracy: MON wants Keane out, so briefed his many friends in the press that Keane was on the way to Celtic. Either Keane would go for the job, or the FAI would get annoyed at his disloyalty and fire him.

    4. It’s all a DD conspiracy: Dastardly Dermot has used MON and RK as a smokescreen whilst PL goes about securing the real candidate. This is highly unlikely IMHO. The risk of reputational damage to Keane, and embarrassment to the FAI, is high. Plus, if true we would expect the real man to be unveiled round… about,,,, now!….

    Nope?

I fear Keane was indeed our number one target, and we really did think we had him. We are now in a bit of a hole. Steve Clarke would be a bold move, as would Henke. Malky MacKay is probably the best qualified and I think most likely to take over.

But I wouldn’t rule out Moyes just yet…

    1. It would distract attention.

    2. It might lead another candidate to think that he had competition.

I just couldn’t see Keane coming to Celtic, not give the budget he’s get, and the hassle his family would get. Oh, and him and Peter Lawwell. Like that would have worked. The more I think about it the more ridiculous it seems.
