Keane asks not to be considered

1184

Reports out of Ireland that Roy Keane is no longer in the running for the Celtic job are correct.  The former Sunderland and Ipswich boss asked not to be considered as Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days.

The overwhelming majority of opinion on the blog and elsewhere is that Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club.  These decision are all risky, and there are no guarantees we will be able to do better than Roy, but I’d be prepared to take that risk.

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Does it count if i say I heard that from a friend of Rks wife Or does the voice in my head count as a source? :)

  4. Happy Keane won’t be coach as his managerial record is poor.

Not to fussed about lack of spend either being cited,

We need a modern tactically aware coach,

The SPL is practically a given,

The priority should be a coach who can start the integration of our promising youth,

One who has an awareness of modern science in terms of fitness and tactics.

Clarke had West Brom playing pretty but ineffective football.

McKay it was hard to discern a style in Cardiffs play but his environment was difficult.

Lambert again in difficult circumstances but Villa were lacking substance. He did play youngsters though.

Rosler i know nothing about but he did a good job for Wigan.Doubt our frugal owners would pay release fee.

Garcia i have no Knowledge but he did well at Brighton.

Collins man management leaves a lot to be desired,

We have very astute businessmen running the club but they lack footballing knowledge.

The business side is running well time for the footballing side to be improved.

Most interestiing thing today is your suggestion that the Board paid heed to the less than enthusiastic welcome that the news of interest in Keane was receiving from a number of fans.

Will this spirit of listening extend to paying heed to those fans who wish to see Celtic distance itself from any ‘Old Firm ‘ association and wish to see Rangers in any shape or form dead and buried?

  8. “If you’re not going to pick me first then I’m taking my ball and playing with the boys up my own close.”

“By not actually offering me the job, and just talking to me the same as all the other potentials, Celtic made me feel like I wasn’t as important as I think I am.”

Roy Keane as Celtic manager would have made NFL’s tenure seem like an episode of Jackanory. NFL negotiated his playing career without (apart from Shearer’s kick) any controversy until he came to Scotland to play for Celtic. Keane, no stranger to on field conflicts, a man renowned for having little patience, a quick tongue and a combative demeanour, would have had the referees ombudsman on speed dial, and been banjoed or banjoed someone every weekend – especially if he lived in Edinburgh, Aiden.

John Collins at Celtic in a management position? We’re off to lie in a darkened room now………….

  10. I think people should stop searching for conspiracy in Roy Keane resignation of today.

Dermot Desmond was afraid about the sale of the season tickets and decided to give Celtic coach job to two Swedish physios. Fanally, it’s Sweden but definitely not Larrson.

    Could RK stand the competition?

  11. Why are people so keen on Larsson? His managerial record is worse than Keane’s and there’s nothing about his playing demeanor that suggests he’d be a great motivator.

  12. Fan-a-tic.

Most of the managers you mentioned had the misfortune of having teams that were mostly cannon fodder to the big boys of the EPL.

How might they react if they went into most games as favourites. Latter stages of Europe excluded of course

  13. West Wales Celt on

I‘ve no problem with living within our means nor with a buy low sell high strategy. I do wonder if we are buying too cheap though.

We surely need to review a formula that seems to allow about 30p in the transfer income pound to be spent on new players. If we want to attract a half decent manager we might need to think about a 60p in the pound equation…

  14. glendalystonsils on

Not just John MacKay at it. Wee Rhona on Embra STV reckons ‘Celtic’s loss is Ireland’s gain’ Whit?

O.K. Rhona hen, using your logic, I just lost £30m the other week

.I never actually had £30m but I had a Euromillions lottery ticket, so I was in the running until some other bassa won it. See where I’m going Rhona? ……..(if yer lurkin)

    BSR,

    That’s more like you.

I too was trying to take positives out of a fairly negative Keane portfolio.

    It’s what we do.

Of course the next Celtic manager is out there, but, I hope it is someone who is on the way up in the game, perhaps from Europe, with a mentor/ dir of football figure by his side.

There is nobody in Scotland that I fancy.

I try not to refer to anecdote or get upset about my own hypothesis of what COULD be the story,

As for “what I heard”, well, I did hear stuff, but I was sworn to secrecy! : > )

I have just arrived back from Dublin, where all the talk was of Keane taking our job.

I genuinely believe that the talks were leaked from the FAI camp and I don’t think Celtic would have been too happy about that.

Agree with what you say but most EPL coaches seem one dimensional and tactically poor

The failure of EPL teams in Europe was not down to bad luck. They all lost to teams with a fraction of their budgets.

The spend, spend approach seems to be the EPL way.

We need someone who puts the integration of our youth set up as priority.

Only Lambert of EPL coaches did that out of necessity .

  26. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

TBJ, it’sgood someone else mentioning Hammill. He struts about like he’s a football player then when he gets the ball he doesn’t know what to do with it other than blooter the thing or an opposition player.

He should have had two red cards in the Ross County game, two yellows for not giving the ball back twice & a straight red for the barge on Adams.

Guys like Hammill, Richie Foran, Frazer Wright and Lasley getting paid for impersonating footballers is one of the reasons why our game is not progressing.

I have no thoughts on who our next manager will be as I haven’t a clue about the club’s targets and the inner workings of appointing a manager. .

  27. I have made it plain previously that I did not fancy Keane.

However, we are still left with the question of who of any substance is going to take a job where every season you will be expected to sell but still perform the trick of qualifying for the Champions League?

  28. Paul ,

You say that “Celtic have tightened their shortlist over the past few days” – how do you know this? What number are we down to now?

How do you know that “Celtic would be taking an enormous risk with Roy Keane, feedback which I know has reached the club. “
