Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Why Neil Lennon quit without having another job lined up isn’t an issue of interest as long as we appoint a new manager within a reasonable (before CL pre-season training starts) time frame,

but the longer it goes without us having a new man in place the more time there is to contemplate – why did Neil quit without having another job lined up?

we all know – as will Neil – that’s its always easier to get a job (from a negotiating terms point of view) when you have a job,

when you don’t it’s a helluva lot tougher and the eventual terms won’t be as good as they would have been – if you had to be lured away from an employer,

to be honest I’m still not sure why Neil left, and a wee bit concerned that the reason he did leave will deter good quality candidates,

the hiring of a rookie manager would ring alarm bells for me as it would suggest that the present set up won’t attract an experienced manager,

    sincerely hope I’m wrong here…

I see a note went up on the offical website re. the overseas season book.

A great idea I think but not sure if awareness is such that is will be the success it could be or whether enough is being done by the club to promote the idea of spreading the burden of supporting the club – it is one of the few ways I can see at the moment of offsetting the tv revenue of our competitors in other leagues.

Even then it would perhaps only allow us to compete with the middle of the road clubs and allow us to keep some of the better players we’ve lost in recent seasons, unfortunately I think that is too optimistic a goal in the short term though!

    =========================

I’m popping in to renew my OST tomorrow morning and yes it is an idea worth developing. It was on the list for the Supporters Forum and I think the subject of spreading the load is one that Celtic really need to look at for the future.

There are simply not enough ways for folk outside the match attending supporters to put something into putting a team on the park that those watching remotely are then able to enjoy at a much lower cost than the folk attending.

Back on to the OST I think that the number of folk that were invited to put their bum on a seat using the non attending OST holders seat is OK but really we should be pushing for more. Here is the information overseas posters might be interested in.

    BECAUSE CELTIC NEVER LEAVES YOU

With our third consecutive league championship in the bag we’re already looking forward to the chance to make it four-in-a-row and the opportunity to compete at Europe’s top table in the UEFA Champions League in season 2014/15. This week sees the arrival of our Season Ticket Renewal Packs and we are pleased to invite you to renew your Overseas Season Ticket here at Celtic Park for the season ahead.

Your contribution to the Club and in particular Celtic FC Foundation are greatly appreciated. The opportunity you provide for people to attend matches at Celtic Park using your ticket really does make a difference in their lives. By the end of this season we will have invited over 850 individuals from underprivileged families in the West of Scotland to enjoy the match day experience at Celtic Park. Thank You!

Renewing your Overseas Season Ticket will allow the Foundation to continue to provide such experiences, which have become a cornerstone of their charitable work, to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend matches at Celtic Park.

    You can play your part in supporting the club no matter where in the world you are. As an Overseas Ticket holder you’ll pay just £250 and enjoy the following benefits;

    • Entry to up to five home matches in Season 2014/15

    • A personalised certificate detailing your seat and contribution to Celtic FC Foundation

    • A complimentary Celtic TV account until May 2015

    • A personalised seat plaque at the Stadium for Season 2014/15

Please find attached your 2014/15 Overseas Season Ticket Renewal Form which you should complete and return to this email address.

Once again, many thanks for your generosity this season, it has been very much appreciated by the Club and Celtic FC Foundation.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact myself directly.

    Kind regards

I bolught a season ticket this season for LB junior. He will be 2 years old in July. It cost me £50. My dad has 5 seats together and 2 of the punters decided to chuck it this season. I took one up for the Bhoy. I doubt he will be at many games this season but even going to 5 pays for the ticket for the season. Fantastic value. The ticket will be available free of charge to any kids on the CSC. That keeps kids coming back to the game and keeps a seat filled on the CSC and potentially in the future.

I believe the seat can be upgraded for cup matches and CL games so again a great bit of value to secure the seat. When I can make the odd game I will take the wee fella and sit him on my knee. Just have to get a ticket anywhere in the lower section.

I’m hoping to make a few more games than last season and will be able to wander down to Murrayfield for the CL matches which is brilliant for us Edinburgh based Tims.

  17. Paul’s article –

“…My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.”

I take that to mean Celtic had shown more than just ‘interest’ and were bargaining with him

  18. Those telling us Henrik has done nothing as a manager, just have a look at what he is managing.Has anyone ever heard of these teams?.Giants of Sweden they aint.

Like O”Neil cutting his teeth at Burton Albion. They have to start somewhere.

I am not saying Henrik is the answer,he might well be,but to write him off because he has a 50% win rate,is ludicrous.

Pocchettino had a 37% win rate at Saints, but he is hot property now.

Henrik,or anyone else will win the SPL.Hopefully,at least one cup,and beat2 grossly inferior, one a tad inferior,to enter the CL.Not beyond anyones capabilities.

Rant over.Of the British applicants,I would go for Steve Clark.

Things must be even more difficult than usual for the ole MSM.

Having spent four or five days telling us Roy Keane was a certainty for the Celtic job they have again got the story spectacularly wrong.

Regardless of the circumstances, they just look stupid … again.

WBA have been operating with a director of football for years. While Clarke will have had some say in some of the signings, generally he has been working with a squad he inherited.

  21. Ron B

Not sure why you would take Paul`s comment to mean that.

I took it to mean Celtic were interested but Keane wasn`t so that was that.

On your earlier post about Celtic not getting credit even if they won the CL five time.

Before Celtic won the Big Cup, the view was that they weren`t equipped to do so because the Scottish League was rubbish. After we won it, it was because the Scottish League was rubbish so we were less tired than other teams!

Apart from being a superb side with a great a manger, I thought that having non-Scottish referees was a great benefit for us.
