Keep our name out of it, Salmond

1113

I’ve heard some utter tosh from politicians over the years but never anything so blatantly untrue as the comments from our First Minister, Alex Salmond, reported today.  This clown is telling people Rangers need to be saved for the sake of Celtic.  He said:

“The most diehard Celtic supporter understands that Celtic can’t prosper unless Rangers are there. The rest of the clubs understand that as well. Therefore you have to have cognisance of these things when you’re pursuing public policy.

Keep our name out of it you incoherent fool.

If our prosperity depends on the survival of Rangers it’s time our values and priorities changed.  You of all people should know this after your lecturing last year.  Celtic have not been well served by their association with Rangers, nor vice versa.  As a combined entity, the ‘Old Firm’ have not been good for Scotland.

I’m keen to hear what his “public policy” on the matter is.  Salmond goes on to say:

“We’ve certainly been arguing to HMRC on one hand, and indeed to Rangers, to for goodness sake get a settlement, get a settlement and a structure over time whereby Rangers can continue because Rangers must continue for the future of Scottish football and for the fabric of the country.”

How dare you argue with HMRC?  Even Rangers admit the potential underpayment could be £75m.  How many nurses, teachers and policemen would that employ, Mr Salmond?  This is the true cost of his position.

This sorry business has nothing to do with Celtic, I hope our club make this clear to provocative politicians.  All you die-hard Celtic supporters out there better let this man know he has no right to speak for you.

“Fabric of the country”. He got that bit right, alas.

The signed Celtic top we are auctioning on eBay for the Vanessa Riddle Appeal has reached an incredible value. Well done to everyone who participated, you are remarkable ambassadors for Celtic Football Club.

There is a worryingly fanatical and authoritarian tendency within the SNP.

Despite the cheerful sales patter about “civic nationalism”, they occasionally let the mask slip and smear people who don’t support them as “anti-Scottish”.

The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act is something they should be deeply, thoroughly ashamed of. But of course, they aren’t. That not one single SNP MSP had the courage or independence of thought to vote against it tells you a lot about that party.

Their willingness to collude in the destruction on statistics relating to anti-Catholic sectarian crimes is a national scandal.

Whenever I see these people in action I am reminded of “The Rule Of The Saints” in 1648, when the Covenanters seized control of Edinburgh and, in the name of Christ and religious freedom, viciously persecuted anyone they deemed to be an enemy.

I’m sure they wouldn’t go out an nail sinners’ ears to wooden stocks or anything like that, but extremism is in their political DNA and I expect they couldn’t resist the opportunity to make life difficult for those they deem to be “anti-Scottish”. (thumbsup)

We already hear that our shirt sponsor is nervous cos they might be on one side’s jerseys only. You can only separate the brand to a point. In England we are all tarred with the OF brush. Totally undeserved but true. They will never admit us to their league and certainly not one or other of us. We are stuck in Scotland and there is only one big game in Scotland. “Our brand” is worthless without a real rival. Watch our sponsors (and top players) disappear when there are no OF games.

The SPL may be forced to recognise the “new Rangers” and beg the sponsors to do the same. The best option for us and the rest of the SPL may be to impose a recuring penalty on the new club eg no europe, 3 years points deduction etc. Don’t get me wrong guys – it’s not my preference but it may have to happen.

    Oh and Celtic need them.

  17. A quick comment I’ve been meaning to make on the SKY deal. Yes it’s written into the contract that price they paid is based on 4 derbies per season. That people extrapolate from this that if Rangers go out of business there will be no tv deal at all is absolute nonsense. True it will be worth a lot less but if it occurs Celtic say “For the good of Scottish Football we agree to an even split of the money” we take a sustainable hit, the remaining clubs lose a marginal amount.

  20. @ Frankly frankly

We can flap our gums all day long about brands. Does pepsi need coke? No. Would the Scottish football brand be weakened w/o rfc(ia)? Without discussing the legal and moral issues surrounding their criminal activity, there would be a short term financial impact, evidence of which we are beginning to see with Dunfermlibe / ICT / DU facing a shortfall due to rfc’ cheating. Tv deal would also be redone, and possibly various other sponsorship deals. However, I actually think the brand would prosper long term if rfc were punished to the full extent of the law / rules. Relative financial parity would create better competition in the SPL and various cup competitions, enhancing the excitement level and willingness of people to go and watch the likes of Aberdeen, Dundee Utd etc . The long term commercial viability of Scottish football demands that rfc are treated like any other institution. You know, those institutions that have to follow the law / rules or be punished accordingly.

    It doesn’t withstand scrutiny.

Which makes me wonder what the purpose of the whole exercise was.

One thing that will I think will sink Rangers completely is that HMRC know that the orcs could be the tip of the football iceberg and if the go easy on them other clubs would need to be treated the same way.So it is likely the revenue will take a tough stance. If we were talking about Montrose for example doing what Rangers have done we would see the full weight of authority coming down on them so if there is anyone that we can reley on to make sure justice is done it will be HMRC.H.H.

Former Everton defender Michael Ball knew Glasgow Rangers were toiling financially the day Sir David Murray asked him to pay £4000 every time he played for the club.

The lifelong Evertonian – signed by Dick Advocaat for £6.5million in 2001 – believes it was the start of a money meltdown at Ibrox which has left them at crisis point.

Ball was just one of the big-money buys in an era when Rangers spent beyond their means in a bid for European success. He was even told by Murray when he arrived in Glasgow that the English Premier League beckoned in the near future.

But when that didn’t materialise and Alex McLeish replaced Advocaat as manager, Ball insists the club was a shadow of its former self.

And when he had to fork out £4000 of his own money to Everton in order to continue playing at Ibrox he feared the worst for Rangers.

It all came home to roost this week when owner Craig Whyte put them in administration with debt spiralling out of control.

And despite foreseeing trouble ahead a decade ago, Ball admitted he’s struggling to comprehend just how perilous his old club’s predicament really is.

He told Record Sport: ‘It’s sad to see what’s happening. Because I’m not in Glasgow I’m watching it on SKY and it’s as if it’s not really happening. It has taken a while to digest the fact they’re in administration.

“Rangers are 140 years old and you don’t expect this kind of thing to happen. But when I compare what the club was like when I first signed to when I’d recovered from injury and started playing again it was totally different.

“Murray wanted to be successful in Europe and a lot of money was spent. But a few clubs have tried that in England with Leeds the top example.

“It was a great time for the players and fans, we all wanted to be part of it. But at some point you have to think of the bigger picture.

“Eventually, when I had to pay Everton £4000 with every game I played I thought there might be problems ahead for Rangers financially.

“There was an agreement that when I played 60 games Everton were due more money. It was only four or five games before I hit the number I found out. I didn’t know about it – it was between Murray and Bill Kenwright.

“It took a few weeks of talks before we came to an agreement and it was Murray’s idea. He said, ‘I want you to play but can’t afford to pay the money’. For him to pull me in and say that it was clear the finances weren’t there.

“I suppose alarm bells should have started ringing but back then no one could have imagined it coming to this.

“Murray actually called Kenwright but he wouldn’t waive it. So we agreed it would”
