King: if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage

1124

Newco chairman, Dave King, this evening issued a remarkable statement.  Not for the first time he referenced Celtic, but on this occasion, he became the first person inside the game to put the Stripping of Titles Rangers won during their EBT and DOS years on the table.

His statement also blankly contradicted an earlier statement he made, when he asserted, “I follow the logic of the argument that if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”

With the tax case lost, and many fair-minded agreeing with his earlier sentiment and calling for titles to be stripped, however, today King said:

“Whether the scheme was in place or not, or whether it survived tax scrutiny or not, made no difference whatsoever to the playing squad of the Club during that period and hence had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

That’s:

“If we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”
Followed by:

“Had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

“Competitive advantage.”

“No impact on the performance.”

In 2012 he even issued an apology and suggested “commercial reparation to the other clubs” was in order.

“Reparation” because “if we lose the tax case” we “gained some competitive advantage”.

In five years he moved from saying Rangers gained a competitive advantage because of the illegal EBT use, and commercial reparations to other clubs was due, to denying any wrongdoing whatsoever.

He should also have read the Celtic statement more carefully.  King today said Celtic, “have attempted to influence the footballing authorities to alter its historic football honours”.

Celtic’s statement called merely for a review, “We are sure now that the footballing authorities in Scotland will wish to review this matter. Celtic awaits the outcome of their review.”

The altering of football honours issue was not put on the table by our club – you can thank Dave King for that thought provoking notion.

  2. CELTIC are eyeing up a £4million swoop move for Manchester City midfielder Olivier Ntcham.

SunSport understands Brendan Rodgers wants the French Under-21 star as his new No10.

Highly-rated Ntcham, 21, has spent the last two seasons on loan at Italian side Genoa.

Powerful Ntcham caught Hoops boss Rodgers’ eye with his performances in Serie A.

Celtic are hopeful they can land the City starlet on a permanent deal. Ntcham moved to The Etihad from Le Havre in a £1m deal as a 16-year-old in 2012.

He then signed a five-year deal in 2015, before being shipped out to Genoa on loan. Ntcham made over 40 appearances Genoa, scoring three goals.

Genoa opted not to make a permanent move, but Torino and Lazio have both been tracking the player who has returned to City.

But now champions Celtic have emerged as a serious option for the strong- running midfielder.

Ntcham can play anywhere in midfield and also as a wide player, but Rodgers is likely to use him as a No10.

The Celtic boss admitted last week he wanted pace and power in that area to bolster his side’s European challenge, and the French kid fits the bill. The Hoops have a strong relationship with City, having taken Patrick Roberts and Jason Denayer on loan, with both being a huge success.

Dedryck Boyata also made the switch from Manchester, and Ntcham could be the next player to swap City for Parkhead.

Celts are hopeful an offer of £4m should be enough to land Ntcham.

Never seen him play. Two seasons experience in Serie A so not a rookie but given Roberts, Denayer and Boyata have all been good signing for us from City then you have to hope he’s of the same standard

  6. Through A Green Glass Brightly on

    From David King’s statement:

“…to correct any false impression created by David Murray’s conflicting evidence in the Craig Whyte trial.”

“As David Murray was personally dealing with transfer expenditure, I sought assurances in a board meeting each year…”

“Put simply, the Murray Group tax scheme helped David Murray reduce his overall investment into Oldco…”

Notice he doesn’t once add the prefix ‘Sir’ before David Murray’s name which is obviously deliberate, no love lost there it seems, suspect this could get very messy indeed between these two which would be such a shame.

That Sun article on the Man City boy looks like idle speculation to me. When you see the words ‘eyeing up’ you get the feeling there is nothing to it. The boy was on loan at Genoa and struggled to make an impact.

  10. Cannae understand the Logan Bailly move……thought he was an excellent keeper who just never got his chance. Maybe his burds lack of discipline? wee bit harsh…….in Brendan we trust though.

My column in The Times tomorrow: with Rangers FC’s integrity in tatters can the SFA really say: “We’re doing nowt”?

    Commendable from Spiers again.

  13. Auldheid: You stated:

“The Registration breach that LNS looked at was on the basis that no unlawful payment had been made but that is now known to be untrue.”

This issue is being tossed around over and over but it is in fact irrelevant.

The registration rules for players clearly state that ALL payments MUST be declared. It says nothing whatsoever about whether or not the payments are lawful (although the assumption would be that they are). Nor in fact does it mention a single word about ‘competitive advantage’.

This is an organisation who regularly toss wee clubs out of competitions for the heinous crime of failing to fill out a date on a form.

We are talking about organised, deliberate, widespread and long-term deception on a scale never encountered before in British sport.

This is no minor misdemeanor. This is industrial scale cheating.

The standard punishment dished out for even minor errors, even for just one player, even for just taking to the field for a few minutes (Sion anyone?) is a 0- 3 official result.

We are talking about entire teams of players, participating in full games, over many seasons and walking off with winners medals and financial rewards. All of which should be quashed.

It is my belief that these trophies should be awarded to the runners up. It doesn’t really matter that much to Celtic but I’ll be it makes a helluva difference to clubs who have never won a major trophy in their entire existence. These ‘wee’ clubs should be given their day and the award of the trophy should be given full media exposure.

Oops, and therein lies a problem. The SMSM are so hopelessly compromised they don’t really want anyone to even talk about all of this. They, like every other organisation involved would much rather the whole thing just went away.

It won’t go away until justice is done and seen to be done.
