King: if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage

1124

Newco chairman, Dave King, this evening issued a remarkable statement.  Not for the first time he referenced Celtic, but on this occasion, he became the first person inside the game to put the Stripping of Titles Rangers won during their EBT and DOS years on the table.

His statement also blankly contradicted an earlier statement he made, when he asserted, “I follow the logic of the argument that if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”

With the tax case lost, and many fair-minded agreeing with his earlier sentiment and calling for titles to be stripped, however, today King said:

“Whether the scheme was in place or not, or whether it survived tax scrutiny or not, made no difference whatsoever to the playing squad of the Club during that period and hence had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

That’s:

“If we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”
Followed by:

“Had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

“Competitive advantage.”

“No impact on the performance.”

In 2012 he even issued an apology and suggested “commercial reparation to the other clubs” was in order.

“Reparation” because “if we lose the tax case” we “gained some competitive advantage”.

In five years he moved from saying Rangers gained a competitive advantage because of the illegal EBT use, and commercial reparations to other clubs was due, to denying any wrongdoing whatsoever.

He should also have read the Celtic statement more carefully.  King today said Celtic, “have attempted to influence the footballing authorities to alter its historic football honours”.

Celtic’s statement called merely for a review, “We are sure now that the footballing authorities in Scotland will wish to review this matter. Celtic awaits the outcome of their review.”

The altering of football honours issue was not put on the table by our club – you can thank Dave King for that thought provoking notion.

Dalyan is always worth a visit. Being going there these last 10 years. Dalyan market is great for fresh fruit & veg and also for gozleme, Turkish pancakes. Genuine fakes always on sale including Celtic tops- was there last week and good news, nae hun tops, not even last years! Iztuzu beach is very much a must go venue. Enjoy your holiday- green with envy even though we’re just back.

  3. IF the spending is from directors loans they must have deep pockets and very very successfulcompanies, if its not well I’m sure our governing body will be diligent and handle this appropriately.

  4. Starry, I seriously believe that money laundering is taking place here, and a blind eye is being cast for financial remuneration.

The board members are not sufficiently wealthy to take a hit by continually throwing good money after bad. Something smells and no questions are being asked by those who run the game………hmmm!

Don’t let him get yer nut mate, he’s only there to wash up his wedge allegedly and he still claims he’s out 20 mil:))

Like Drumpf in the White House he’s only there to enrich himself, the idea that he’s a real rangers man is risible…

Not one question from anybody about SoftLoansInc, incredible in this day and age, Park might be wealthy but he’s not a bottomless pit of money to throw down a stank:))

  7. The worst thing Celtic could do is respond to glibby – Let’s see what the spfl does before further comment. amazing how none of the smsm haven’t spotted the contradiction to his previous statement.

I expect the impartial bbc to be on it – not

  8. In the fifties/sixties the term “cash stuffed brown envelope” was almost synonymous with football particularly to pay football players under the counter and so attract them to your club and away from opponents.

EBTS as RFC operated them are the modern day equivalent, unlawful payments hidden from football authority AND opponents to entice a player to play for Rangers.

EBTS should have been fully registered because one purpose of Registration is to deter the practice of under the counter payments, but if you register the ebts they are not under the counter any longer thus becoming taxable and alert wage competitors what they have to beat to recruit the player you are after.

Strip away all the semantics and jargon and its simply a case that Rangers paid players under the counter using ebts as the brown envelope . Does the motivation really matter?

The Registration breach that LNS looked at was on the basis that no unlawful payment had been made but that is now known to be untrue.

What we are left using LNS’s own words are

There may be ‘extreme cases in which there is such a fundamental defect that the registration of a player must be treated as having been invalid from the outset.

But in the kind of situation that we are dealing with here we are satisfied that the registration of the Specified Players with the SPL was valid from the outset.”

The situation he referred to was on basis payments were lawful, they were not, so using his own words what we now have is a number of extreme cases stretching over ten years or more where players ineligible from the outset were fielded.

You can see why the football authority want to avoid any review, its not just the sanctions against RFC that worry them. You can also see why LNS was set up to deliver the decision that he did.

Some sort of financial amnesty between clubs needs to be brokered here to open the way to any inevitable titles removal based on unlawful undeclared payments, but it needs to be done for the good of the game which should be the prime consideration.

All because Sir David Murray systemically used ebts for over 10 years to seek competitive advantage.

At least Dave King got who was primarily to blame right.

  9. I would be willing to wager that if the powers that be averted their gaze to the north of Ireland, they would find the answer as to where the money is coming from.

I never mentioned loyalist drug money.

  10. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

We have to remember that King is a discredited corner-boy criminal, a laughing stock even in business circles.

Of course it’s in his interests to goad us into a pig-wrestling contest.

But if we do that, we get dirty and the pig trots away happy.

    Ignore the taunts.

Our club, with or without others, has to lodge a formal complaint with UEFA, citing the cases of Edinburgh FC and Dundee United, both of whom suffered major sanctions for what were basically clerical errors, as opposed to wilful, conscious systematic cheating over a decade.

UEFA’s zero-tolerance action against FC Giannina of Greece for tax-dodging might be thrown in as well.

The longer we say and do nothing, the more Jim Traynor owns the agenda.

We have clout. Time we used it.

  11. I can honestly see why Celtic did not respond to Gliby’s previous utterances as it would have given the @rse some credence, but this latest statement is not only factually incorrect (a lie) it is also inflammatory. If Celtic do not respond this time I’m afraid there is something wrong.

  12. Margaret McGill on

The Huns have just rubbed Celtic’s nose in their own shit.

From what I understand from Paul67’s previous missive is that it is really up to the footballing punters of Scotland, who pay for the game, to take up the moral compass. I’m assuming that’s because the corporate scum that represent these clubs cannot be trusted to do the right thing. Even when their noses are rubbed in someone else’s repugnant feaces!

Its truly amazing that a snake-eyed lump of wid cardboard gangster can shut our PLC up.

There is something far wrong there.

You would think the PLC were afraid to stand up to him.

If nothing happens this time and the silence continues there is a big skeleton in Celtic’s closet. I wonder what it could be.

The guy made a complete clown of himself today…

    He’s no the full shilling…

Why on earth would we join in with his daft wee game, he must think we’re daft..

Apart form the huns who do you think takes him seriously?

    It’s no a bar brawl..

    That’s exactly what he wants…

  16. Quote: “The Celtic board issued a statement agitating for a re-opening and reversal of the decisions previously made when, in fact, nothing has changed. It is disappointing that they have attempted to influence the footballing authorities to alter its historic football honours by calling on administrators and lawyers to achieve off the pitch what its teams failed to do on the pitch.”

This is somewhat more serious than his implying that our league wins didn’t count because the huns died.

  17. A 45k a week pub team skelping squirrel….

brought in to make sure that there will be…

no uprising from within the Celtic support…

towards the complicit / inactive PLC….

a PLC who will be hoping that…

the very presence of Mr Rodgers at the club….

will kill, stone dead, any fermenting unrest….

before the fan fury escalates into….

    car park demonstrations, etc….

ye see, Mr Rodgers wizny recruited….

to do the Celtic supporters a turn(even though he does)…

Na, what made the PLC bring in Mr Rodgers was…..

30,000 empty seats and, they knew that, if they didn’t….

react to the SC verdict, well, there might be a lot more…

    than 30,000 empty seats……so, hey presto……

and, the complicit PLC…..pull Mr Rodgers oot a hat !!!

But, will the skelping of pub teams be enough to make….

an enraged Celtic supporter base, look the other way…

from the complicit PLC’s dereliction of duty…?

    Hmmmmmmm…..time will tell…tick tock….

    Anyway,………

  18. It’s funny no matter who says or does what, there are some here will turn it into it being a failure by Celtic.

Celtic have taken the lead and it is clear from King’s statement that he is worried about Celtic’s stance.

We badly need another Club to back us but I won’t be holding my breath.

So far the more militant fringe of Aberdeen & Dundee United Supporters, are the only ones to speak out.

I don’t know how far Celtic can bring this without independent backing but as an earlier poster alluded, our best hope is that Desmond has taken personal umbrage.

The PLC dont need to get into a slanging match, but there comes a time when you have to act.

I think the PLC need to defend Celtic, because we are taking pelters from idiots.

The guy deep in corrupt practice, is still brave enough to call out the PLC, that worries me.

ThomTheThim said earlier that making an enemy of the great moustacioed one isny the best thing to do, I agree with him 100%.

Our problem is not knowing what is happening, I bet DD and Pedro along with the rest of our suits know everything that is going down, they are playing the game as best they see it, we don’t always agree with them, we do sometimes, on this occasion we are just gonna have to wait and see what transpires.

As for skeletons in the Celtic cupboard, I have no idea, but it does make you wonder at times, even Auldheid mentioned something along those lines the other day, and that’s no like him.

  24. THE GREEN MAN SAYS SACK THE BOARD

We as supporters favour the jackets aff approach, I’ve been patient up till now with Celtic because in my opinion it’s a long game.

The Supreme court decision was followed by a statement from Celtic which I thought was pretty clever the way it was worded.

Now today Glibby is at it and trying to provoke Celtic. If Celtic react I’m happy with that and if they don’t I’m also okay with that as I think that’s what Glibby wants to reduce it to us v them.

If we do that and reduce it to that level then I fear we will further entrench the idea of two cheeks of the same arse mentality among other supporters.

As I said yesterday if Celtic don’t follow this through the authorities then the game is up as for Glibby he has been trying to make his team relevant since Brendan arrived, they’re not and he knows it.

All that matters is that the rules are enforced after the SC decision, Glibby just a sideshow clown trying to muddy the waters.

The best fighters don’t respond with anger to cheap insults.

Glibby will get his of that I’m pretty sure and probably from his own kind..

  28. King’s statement today has more to do with Tuesday’s embarrassment in Luxembourg than what Celtic said in their statement yesterday. He’s an idiot, not even a dangerous one, just an idiot who is trying to continuously fleece his even more idiotic support. It’s all about the money and how much he can con from them.

Celtic should ignore him and continue to turn the levers of power (in this case the SPFL) to bring about the conclusion supporters across the country want and deserve.
