King: if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage

1124

Newco chairman, Dave King, this evening issued a remarkable statement.  Not for the first time he referenced Celtic, but on this occasion, he became the first person inside the game to put the Stripping of Titles Rangers won during their EBT and DOS years on the table.

His statement also blankly contradicted an earlier statement he made, when he asserted, “I follow the logic of the argument that if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”

With the tax case lost, and many fair-minded agreeing with his earlier sentiment and calling for titles to be stripped, however, today King said:

“Whether the scheme was in place or not, or whether it survived tax scrutiny or not, made no difference whatsoever to the playing squad of the Club during that period and hence had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

That’s:

“If we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”
Followed by:

“Had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

“Competitive advantage.”

“No impact on the performance.”

In 2012 he even issued an apology and suggested “commercial reparation to the other clubs” was in order.

“Reparation” because “if we lose the tax case” we “gained some competitive advantage”.

In five years he moved from saying Rangers gained a competitive advantage because of the illegal EBT use, and commercial reparations to other clubs was due, to denying any wrongdoing whatsoever.

He should also have read the Celtic statement more carefully.  King today said Celtic, “have attempted to influence the footballing authorities to alter its historic football honours”.

Celtic’s statement called merely for a review, “We are sure now that the footballing authorities in Scotland will wish to review this matter. Celtic awaits the outcome of their review.”

The altering of football honours issue was not put on the table by our club – you can thank Dave King for that thought provoking notion.

  8. I think people are wrong when they think the big “cover-up” is just a Scotland/Rangers thing. As someone else posted today, the huns were caught as part of another investigation with some of English football’s top men involved. The level of, what I would class as fraud, carried out by these guys is breath-taking.

It Is only because Rangers/Scotland is small fry in comparison that HMRC got their toe in the door. They were chased well off in England although everyone knows the individuals involved are crooks. There is an almost Saville like silence which will probably break when the old crooks die.

    Corruption is endemic throughout football!

    Absolutely agree

The current phenomena of managers demanding funds to strengthen squads ( that already have players worth hundreds of millions) is in my humble opinion more to do with kickbacks between managers and agents on transfer fees and than any real desire to get the team playing better football.

  11. Celtic poised to sign Manchester City’s Olivier Ntcham for a fee of around £4.5m

It is believed that Olivier Ntcham had his Celtic medical in Glasgow on Saturday

Celtic are close to completing the signing of France Under-21 midfielder Olivier Ntcham from Manchester City for a fee in the region of £4.5m.

Personal terms have been agreed with the 21-year-old, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Italian side Genoa in Serie A.

Ntcham arrived in Glasgow on Saturday to undergo a medical.

The playmaker moved to City’s youth ranks in 2012 from the famous Le Havre academy in his homeland.

He has represented France at every youth level from under-16 to under-21.

Ntcham, who scored three goals in 37 Serie A appearances for Genoa, could be available for Celtic’s Champions League qualifier against Linfield on Friday night.

If he completes his move, the Frenchman will become Brendan Rodgers’ third summer signing following the captures of Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen and Kundai Benyu from Ipswich Town.

Meanwhile, talks are ongoing with Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong’s agent about a new contract.

However, the Scottish champions are relaxed about the situation despite the 25-year-old Scotland international entering the final year of his current deal.

  12. Hope SA signs up as he has a lot to contribute to this team.

re the S** ‘ story ‘ on Armstrong, baffled by the scepticism of their ‘ journalism ‘ it’s not like they have ever played fast and loose with the facts when reporting. On the other hand…

  13. I see on Twitter that silence from SPL Board means no action will be taken.

Now fully aware as I am that the meaning we give anything is driven by a core hard to shake belief that we all defend at all costs, here is the meaning I’m giving the silence but based on a bit more facts than I suspect many have.

(Doesn’t mean I’m right of course but here it is anyway)

At the SPL Board meeting in Feb 2013 that decided to accept LNS it was done in 2 stages.

    First a discussion by Teleconference!

Then a week later after the legal advice on making an appeal they sought was provided -get this – the final decision was done by E mails!!!

Eric Riley Celtic’s SPL Board man was on holiday at the second stage and did not take part in accepting, so you can bet yer boots Celtic are not going to let such an important decision get out of their control.

You cannot rattle a sabre over a phone or e mail as you can in person.

Lawwell stance (if it were me) will be he will be crucified if an independent review is not done and as Celtic ain’t the bad guys he will be effed if he is going to let that happen.

He has all the evidence LNS was duped and SFA were less than honest on UEFA licence and knows it is out on social media, so he has a strong hand to play as in taking SFA to court as Fergus did.

That’s my view of course but letters from supporters/shareholders expressing their feelings and fears if nothing is done give him incentive and power to demonstrate to the others the cost to Celtic of no review.

So contact him and strengthen his arm .

I’ll be honest,I had no time for Ricksen in a blue jersey, any more than any of them. But anyone suffering that-IMO-most dreadful of diseases deserves sympathy, empathy, support, prayers.

He doesn’t deserve to have his name paraded and words twisted in that way.

  17. I see some support for declaring TRFC are a new club in order to satisfy justice.

I can understand the desire to take titles away based on sporting advantage unlawful ebts provided but as that will never be accepted by the nasties on the deluded but unshakeble belief those players would have signed anyway then the not the same club solution has to be an option if a review is carried out and it finds that

    a) the LNS Commission was corrupted by dishonesty by concealing wtc documents from it.

    b) therefore it’s findings are unreliable and are set aside.

    c) payment of players by a means made unlawful through dishonest concealment of side contracts involving a third party makes any prizes won utilising ebts worthless.

    d) However as those prizes won by dishonest methods have been attributed to a club whose existence ended in 2012 they cannot be removed and

    e) UEFA have informed the SFA that under UEFA FFP, which Scottish club licensing must comply with, UEFA have determined The Rangers Football club are a new club as defined in Article 12 of FFP

There will be no future action against Rangers currently in liquidation and TRFC although the latter cannot lay claim to the honours of the former which will be recognised in SPFL and SFA records and marketing.

I think that If The Rangers FC supporters had any sense of decency divorcing themselves from such extensive dishonesty should be viewed as an opportunity to start anew properly and the above is an elegant solution to the problem.

  18. I’ve said it for years. Long term……if Scotland is to have a viable footballing presence on the World stage then the scoddish domestic outfit are going to have to be made to submit to something akin to a Truth and Reconciliation process…very apt when we consider the actions of the huns and their supporters at the heart of this.

  19. industrialdan on

I think we should look to the Italian Football Federation for guidance on this as Juventus were stripped of a title.

As Rangers basically bribed players to join them.
