King: if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage

1124

Newco chairman, Dave King, this evening issued a remarkable statement.  Not for the first time he referenced Celtic, but on this occasion, he became the first person inside the game to put the Stripping of Titles Rangers won during their EBT and DOS years on the table.

His statement also blankly contradicted an earlier statement he made, when he asserted, “I follow the logic of the argument that if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”

With the tax case lost, and many fair-minded agreeing with his earlier sentiment and calling for titles to be stripped, however, today King said:

“Whether the scheme was in place or not, or whether it survived tax scrutiny or not, made no difference whatsoever to the playing squad of the Club during that period and hence had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

That’s:

“If we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”
Followed by:

“Had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

“Competitive advantage.”

“No impact on the performance.”

In 2012 he even issued an apology and suggested “commercial reparation to the other clubs” was in order.

“Reparation” because “if we lose the tax case” we “gained some competitive advantage”.

In five years he moved from saying Rangers gained a competitive advantage because of the illegal EBT use, and commercial reparations to other clubs was due, to denying any wrongdoing whatsoever.

He should also have read the Celtic statement more carefully.  King today said Celtic, “have attempted to influence the footballing authorities to alter its historic football honours”.

Celtic’s statement called merely for a review, “We are sure now that the footballing authorities in Scotland will wish to review this matter. Celtic awaits the outcome of their review.”

The altering of football honours issue was not put on the table by our club – you can thank Dave King for that thought provoking notion.

I was just the right age to appreciate Steve Murray. A fantastic player who Jock had long coveted.

Think I’ve mentioned it before, but I recall an article in summat like Shoot or The Topical Times-ask yer Dad,you young yins!-where he said he was the first to play in white boots before Alan Ball got the deal for them.

One game I particularly remember an outstanding display from him,a very good Hibs side-inc Pat Stanton,of course-turned up at CP challenging for the title.

    Not after a 5-0 drubbing,they weren’t.

He was as much a loss to us at that time as George Connelly and David Hay. Just for a bliddy toe injury.

  7. If Ntcham signs up it would add to the already big list of CMs we have. Brown,Armstrong, Kouassi,McGregor,Biton,Rogic, Henderson,Christie and Allan are on loan for the season and apparently RC has been told he still has a chance with us.

It will be interesting to see how Rodgers shapes the midfield if we get this guy in…

I have added this (still to be moderated) comment

Without an indemnity would those players with one have played?

Why if they wanted a tax free salary of say £10K at 40% tax were the not offered in the region of £14K PLUS (to cover the tax on the extra £4k) ? Why was that extra £4k+ not offered as DK is suggesting but an indemnity was offered instead?

Was at least one player not told it was payment by ebt or no deal?

Boumsong would have preferred payment by normal means and only found out payment was by ebt at the last minute. Rather than up the offer to cover the tax he was given an indemnity.

Without indemnities, that made the ebts RFC used unlawful, would those players have been on the park?

Players saying they won trophies fair an square would not have been there but for the taxpayers money that put them there and they insisted on a tax payer funded pay top up by asking or taking an indemnity.

Its the greed that kills you.

Olivier sounds, by all accounts, like he is top drawer.

It begs the question. Why Us?

Hopefully it is due to the Brendan factor and Celtic’s growing reputation as a finishing school for promising players.

  23. There should be a national outcry that the cheating of the game has been confirmed.

This is the type of genuine scandal that attracts the attention of the Government, government ministers and the media.

It is a scandal in itself that it, as yet, has not to the cataclysmic degree it deserves.

  24. Celtic will be capturing one of the most exciting talents in world football when they complete the signing of Olivier Ntcham, according to his former manager at Genoa.

The French playmaker is on the verge of completing a deal to move to Brendan Rodgers ‘ side and could become their marquee signing of the summer.

Ntcham spent the past two seasons on loan to Serie A side Genoa and he left a huge impression on experienced manager Andrea Mandorlini, who was in charge of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris outfit last term

And he was full of praise for the 21-year-old Manchester City midfielder.

    “He has extraordinary talent.

Nice to see mention of Stevie Murray – I mind seeing him play for Dundee in a cup semi final in 1970 and my dad saying we should sign him. A beautiful player – his early retirement is perhaps less remembered than George Connelly’s downfall or the calamity which befell Brian McLaughlin but he was a smashing player of a type who would thrive now

And yet I missed the pinnacle of his career when he scored v Basle. As my mum was at the game we had to go to the stand. The bloke right in front of me dropped his fag on himself in the move leading up to the final header and stands up in panic trying to put out the fire on his coat and I cannot see a thing. So my mum and dad saw the goal but I did not. Lucky white heather?

Celtic made a statement on Wednesday after the verdict and since then there has been a lot written and spoken. However we are none the wiser as to how this will play out. If Celtic are serious about taking this forward, there is a way we can heap the pressure on the authorities whilst clarifying our position. If we were to realise another statement that says simply,

‘Further to our previous statement last week, we wish to clarify our position after some erroneous reporting and misrepresentations. We expressed surprise that the previous enquiry arrived at the conclusion that no sporting advantage had taken place. In our view we expected the authorities to look at the matter again in light of the Supreme Court decision.

However, given the response from our own supporters and those across Scotland and in light of the statement from the SFA which we feel is inadequate, we now feel it is imperative that a full, independent and transparent investigation takes place to ensure all supporters have confidence in our game. We would not wish to prejudice any new enquiry however we would add that new evidence in various forms has come to light since the original enquiry.’

That way authorities would be boxed into a corner they would find it very difficult to get out of.
