King: if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage

1124

Newco chairman, Dave King, this evening issued a remarkable statement.  Not for the first time he referenced Celtic, but on this occasion, he became the first person inside the game to put the Stripping of Titles Rangers won during their EBT and DOS years on the table.

His statement also blankly contradicted an earlier statement he made, when he asserted, “I follow the logic of the argument that if we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”

With the tax case lost, and many fair-minded agreeing with his earlier sentiment and calling for titles to be stripped, however, today King said:

“Whether the scheme was in place or not, or whether it survived tax scrutiny or not, made no difference whatsoever to the playing squad of the Club during that period and hence had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

That’s:

“If we lose the tax case then we probably gained some competitive advantage.”
Followed by:

“Had no impact on the performance on the pitch.”

“Competitive advantage.”

“No impact on the performance.”

In 2012 he even issued an apology and suggested “commercial reparation to the other clubs” was in order.

“Reparation” because “if we lose the tax case” we “gained some competitive advantage”.

In five years he moved from saying Rangers gained a competitive advantage because of the illegal EBT use, and commercial reparations to other clubs was due, to denying any wrongdoing whatsoever.

He should also have read the Celtic statement more carefully.  King today said Celtic, “have attempted to influence the footballing authorities to alter its historic football honours”.

Celtic’s statement called merely for a review, “We are sure now that the footballing authorities in Scotland will wish to review this matter. Celtic awaits the outcome of their review.”

The altering of football honours issue was not put on the table by our club – you can thank Dave King for that thought provoking notion.

    Dessybhoy,

I don’t think in the modern game, certainly not at Lennoxtown, where there are plenty of ologists on the coaching staff, that the decision would be based on one man’s opinion.

I reckon that there would be a list of criteria and ongoing assessment of a lad’s progress.

This would possibly take in his personal development, his physical development and his football development.

After all that is taken into account, they would probably judge how close to the first team a boy is and how many, if any, other boys would be ahead of him.

If there is more than one candidate who fits the bill, then the head coach will have the deciding vote on who stays and who goes.

This is probably decided by the age old tie break system of hammer ,scissors, paper! : > )

Same club narrative…can be made legal/official but waste of time because sevco being rangers will ultimately go down as a popular misconception like the forbidden fruit mentioned in the Book of Genesis is an apple.

    Title stripping …documented cheating.

Correct – no idea why there is any debate here or elsewhere re title stripping. Apparenly they were exciting times though. A forner SFA President told me.

  10. When I started at St Patrick High Dumbarton Steve Murray was in the school senior team, prabably in his final year there. As I remember it St Pat’s had a great sports master in Jack Gilroy at the time too.

  11. Can I ask another stupid question

Why is it only trophies won from 2001 for the cheats ?

Their scheme as run from 1998 was already found to be illegal – a fact kept from LNS

Surely any review must go back to the beginning

    So what was also won from1998 – 2001/2 ???

Bobby and Jimbo, my dad liked Stevie Murray’s playing style , and he was a hard person to please with regard to our players.

Jimbo as you say another very good player we lost early to injury in the early to mid seventies .

Brian McLaughlin had the potential to be better than Kenny Dalglish and George Connolly was imperious.

His all time favourite was our very own Gaelic speaker, Malcolm Macdonald . He also thought Willie Wallace who could play football and look after himself and his team mates , was an exceptional player.

Your father certainly knew how to pick a player.

Malcolm Macdonald was my own father’s favourite player, too.

I saw him playing in an Old Crocks game at Lochburn Park, Maryhill.

    He still had it.

  14. Dallas! Dallas!

Aye we were unlucky the way things panned out in the 70s (statistically our most succesful decade though I think). My dad was a Jimmy Delaney and Charlie Napier fan.

I was in Perth in Western Australia in 2006 and recall meeting a blokei ( McKay I think waa his surname) who had played for the Socceroos when they qualified for the 74 World Cup . [ Because he was a professional the Aussie board actually banned him from playing in the finals] This bloke – an expat Scot and I think possibly a Jambo- was pally with fellow emigres Ernie Hannigan and Francis Burns ( both big Celts) who were more than merely decent ex-pros and this McKay bloke reckoned he was miles better than them and indeed any Scot who’d plied his trade in Oz in the 70s or 80s. I asked ‘Willie Wallace?’ To which he replied ‘Well obviously I wasn’t as good as him!’

My hunch is Armstrong will stay. I getvthis feelingbabout certain players in our team.

I had it about Stokes, Griffiths, Brown

Thesevare intermediate standard players who are top class in SPFL but would be second rate in EPL. Hooper was a goodvexamplebof someone who fell in to thst category who believed his own hype and psid the price. Armstrong a bit too saavy and self aware to make that mistake.

We need these guys as mainstays supplemented by temporary highervquality guys like Dembele, VVD, Wanyama etc. All three have additional advantage of super athletic physiques.

My favourite of these intermediate mainstays is Griffithsvwhich is why he should accommodated. My belief is he can score goals for another 5 years at any level. As proven in the recent England game.

  16. Instead of concentrating on the possible punishment of the dead Rangers and their titles I think the rest of Scottish football and fans should press for a clear statement from SFA and SPFL that the new Rangers are exactly that. A new club with no history.

  17. Jimbo67,

Aye, the ole Punic Wars. Hannibal and his elephants and the like. Think it was Cato who muttered that immortal phrase.

I grew up on tales of Malcolm MacDonald; then my Dad’s favourite player. Now he reckons Bobby Murdoch is his all time favourite.

  25. Good evening all.

On the subject of songs, been meaning to mention this wee story for a while now. After the cup final on the way back to my car I came across this guy who maintained that the previous night, in a dream, he had imagines the whole ground singing a song for Calum McGregor, base on the tune to The Pink Panther. Get the tune clear in your head first and then it goes –

    Ca’lum, Ca’lummmm. C’lummmm, Ca’lum, Ca’lum Ca’lum, Ca’lum M’grgr, Calum McGregor

    Ca’lum, Ca’lummmm. C’lummmm, Ca’lum, Ca’lum Ca’lum, Ca’lum M’grgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    Do-do-do-do-do-do-didu, didu, didu,didu, Calum McGregor…….. Calum McGregor………

  26. Visited the auld man earlier and had a quick scan through his s####y m**l and although I was missing my bins, didn’t see one single item on this weeks btc decision. The biggest sports scandal in this country’s history and not one mention. Obviously an editorial decision to placate the stickies, but think of the pages they could have filled with the history of the case…

recipients, timescale, debate etc. Could’ve had a 16 page special like when the tribute act won the petrofact cup at the fourth time of asking.

The sfa have no intention of doing anything that will upset the huns.

They have just broken all the rules by giving the huns a licence to play in europe FFS, not a peep from anyone was said, carry on was the cry and yous are expecting justice, I wouldn’t be holding my breath if I was you.

I have said from day one that they will get away with it and they have, dumped well over £100 million of debt and still control the sfa-spfl-the media etc, still call themselfs rangers, still play out of ibrox, still shame scotland.

We need to do everything in our power to get the ef out of the shithole, it’s the ONLY way we will get a level playing field on and off the park.

That’s the way to do it. Brilliant.

  30. Jimbo67,

Have to agree with my Dad’s choice. Bobby Murdoch is the best I’ve seen in a Celtic jersey. My own favourite (as I’ve said a lot more than once on here) is Charlie Gallagher, who, as my Dad says, would have been world class if he had wee Bertie’s dig. George Connolly going out of the game so quickly is a great shame. Pure class. Saw his keepy up performance when he was 16. I think.

Never fancied Roy Aitken. Peter Grant even less. What Paul McStay (and Celtic) might have achieved, if he had anyone of similar ability to play alongside him……

  31. They are guilty as charged….
