Larsson, Lennon and Brown

Friday is the 8th annual Celtic Quick News Open.  The event, in which our guest speaker will be Livingston FC Manager and former Celt John Hughes, is completely booked up with a record 54 golfers. In addition to playing golf and having fun the CQN Open raises funds for good causes

Our good causes this year are The Haven Centre in Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents’ Association.

We have already distributed over £2000 thanks to the sale of a Joseph Gormley painting back in April. We have two further fantastic paintings by Joseph; one of Scott Brown and one of Henrik Larsson. We also have a wonderful signed Neil Lennon print by the artist Gary Brandham.

The items are being raffled on ebay right now for the price of a £1 ticket. Winners will be drawn at the CQN Open on Friday night. There will be further raffles and auctions on Friday night with some excellent golfing and other sporting activities been donated by the Celtic family. Perhaps the pick is a limited edition canvas print of John Thomson, donated by the John Thomson Memorial Committee. There are only 22 of these in the entire world, representing the 22 years of John’s life.

This is a unique opportunity to win three great pieces of Celtic memorabilia, items which would normally be pushed out of the reach of most people at auction. Tickets cost £1, buy as many as you like, but participate. This is what your club is all about!

Many congratulations to Sean Fallon on his 90th birthday. I am delighted his autobiography is currently being written. Sean is our last remaining link to huge parts of our history. He was there, participating in the decision process, on so many of the things we now take for granted. The research, preparation and publicity surrounding his autobiography will be an opportunity to make sure younger generations get to appreciate the great resource he is. Let’s hope we get a CQN interview one day.

Sighs of relief will be heard around many dens of iniquity as Rangerstaxcase sails into the sunset; well done on excellent work. RTC’s “99% crap” has teased, entertained and informed for over a year. History is already being rewritten, but the inescapable fact is that Rangers diaspora were far better served by RTC than by the army of cheerleaders Sir David Murray or Craig Whyte depended upon to make their work possible.

The ‘buy lots of raffle tickets’ message if for you, b.t.w. so what are you waiting on, they are only £1 each!!!

From what I’ve seen in previous years, it would appear they had none of those scaremongering adverts haunting young children’s imaginations about the potential hazards of frivolously indulging in firework mayhem.

Oh no. Nae biscuit tins fur thaim!

On the contrary, they encourage the young ones to lob grenade sized munitions at each other while laughing maniacally. I’m still traumatised by an experience in Ouchy a few years ago which felt and sounded like a combination of all the worst parts of Saving Private Ryan and the seige of Sarajevo. On the other hand I’m convinced they terrorised the weans about going deaf at rock concerts, hence the scramble to stick flumps in their ears at the slightest hint of live music.

If Sevco bought Rangers FC from Duff & Duffer, I’d like to know what the legal definition of a football club is.

Because if they did buy Rangers FC, then there’s nothing stopping any football club racking up huge, unplayable debts, and shedding them any time the like. Creditors can sing for their money.

If the SFA are recognising The Rangers FC as the club founded in 1872, then Celtic have been absolute fools running a tight financial ship this past decade, allowing Rangers to win titles and cups in the process.

Why didn’t we just keep outspending them? Why didn’t we just keep buying EPL players and paying them fortunes, when we could just liquidate, sell CP and Lennoxtown to Celtic supporting businessmen for a pittance, then apply for our own membership and carry on with no debt.

We’d keep on spending recklessly to get back to the SPL from Division 3, because Celtic would always be Celtic, wouldn’t they? Liquidation would just be a technicality.

I’ve always understood our living within our means, because the board have to ensure the long term viability of the club. But the SFL crediting The Rangers FC with Rangers’ trophy haul makes a complete mockery of that.

  19. CELTIC´S youngsters will kick-off their 2012/13 NextGen Series campaign at home to Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, September 6.

The young Hoops will take also face Aston Villa and PSV Eindhoven over the coming months in the group stages of the prestigious tournament.

Last year the Under-19s took part in the European competition against Barcelona, Manchester City and Marseille, and it proved to be a vital exercise in terms of experience and development.

The competition also allows three overage players the chance to participate, opening the door to some of those who featured last year but have now graduated from the Youth Academy.

Here is a list of this season´s fixtures:

    Sporting Lisbon (H) Sept 6

    Aston Villa (A) Sept 19

    PSV Eindhoven (H) Oct 3

    Aston Villa (H) Oct 24

    Sporting Lisbon (A) Nov 7

    PSV Eindhoven (A) Nov 28

  20. Another Norwich blog that rates Vaughan.

Every year, every team will have those players that define their season or are a major reason they do what they do. Last year, the fans saw those players as David Fox, John Ruddy and Grant Holt by voting them into their top 3 in the Player of the Year award.

Who will be those players this season and who could be the one to give us those much needed points for survival… or better?

    James Vaughan

The player I was most excited about last summer and a player I`m very confident he will end up being Paul Lambert`s best signing for the club. Unfortunate with injuries last season he has started this year`s pre season in fantastic form and is looking as sharp as ever. With pace to burn, I think he could get 10-15 goals if kept fit. Personally, I think a front two partnership of Holt and Vaughan could be deadly. Imagine being a centre half and having to mark either a big, strong striker with great movement, or a very quick striker who you`re probably going to spend most of your time chasing. I wouldn`t fancy facing either of them!

  21. The Establishment feel comfortable dealing in double standards. It leaves you room to manouevre, a space of mendacity, if you will. It’s tradition. And the establishment are upholders of tradition, if nothing else. It has always been thus…hence the determination for stasis & stagnation…its all about the illusion of continuity dontcha know?

Tallybhoy – That is a heartening story.

I won’t lie to you, Tallybhoy, I’ve had negative experiences with Italians before.

One time, I hired this Italian plumber to fix my toilet.

He seemed nice enough, although I wasn’t sure about his command of the English language as he answered my every question with “It’s-a me, Mario!”.

Anyway, he had a reputation for being “Super” so I left him to get on with it.

A couple of hours later I was getting a bit worried that he hadn’t left, so I popped my head round the door and found him eating mushrooms and jumping up and down on the shell of my pet tortoise.

I was extremely annoyed and worried that I was dealing with a crazy person, so I tried to shoo him out of the house, but he ran upstairs and banged his head off the ceiling, dislodging some gold coins that had somehow become stuck there.

All of this commotion upset my pet ape, Clyde, who started beating his chest and throwing barrels at the manic Italic.

As he bounded the barrels in pursuit of the startled simian, I feared the mentalist Mr. Mario would assault yet another one of my pets, but thankfully the effects of the magic mushrooms suddenly subsided and he seemed to physically shrink to half the size.

Then, without warning, he pulled out a feather from his pocket and jumped out of a first floor window.

I never saw him again, and my toilet remained unfixed. (thumbsup)

Surely all of the “negotiating” which went on last week between Green and the football authorities suggests that all parties know that Sevco5088 Limited is not the club founded in 1872 and incorporated in 1899. The reason for having Sevco agree to accept responsibility for the moribund club’s football debts together with any penalties to be imposed for that club’s years of misdeeds, is that Sevco cannot legally have these issues imposed upon it. It is an entirely new club. It knows it. Its followers know it. The SFA knows it.

  27. look at the list of crimes from the previous known club called rangers and ask

comes to pass and so openly and brazen is enough for me, it proves beyond all

doubt there is no hope for sporting integrity in scottish football [ if there ever was i

  29. Manchester United fans aren’t happy. And looking at the terms of the proposed share sale in New York announced last night, it’s not hard to see why.

The Glazer family, the club’s US owners, want to raise up to $330m (£210m) on Wall Street, having shelved plans to raise $1bn in Singapore.

The problems lie with the terms of the sale, and what the Glazers intend to do with the money raised.

Only part of the proceeds will go towards paying down the club’s $680m debt, with a significant chunk going directly to the Glazers themselves. And the structure of the sale means the Glazers’ Class B shares will have 10 times the voting power of the Class A shares sold to the public.

“Supporters are going to be very angry about this,” says Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters Trust.

“The Glazers have already cost United more than £550m in debt related fees and now we have another slap in the face as they help themselves to half of the proposed [sale] proceeds.

But it’s not just the fans that are unhappy.

More worrying perhaps for the Glazers, given their need to raise cash fast, some investors appear equally sceptical.

“Shareholders are getting a shoddy deal,” says Michael Jarman, chief equity strategist at H2O Markets, an ex-professional footballer and a United fan himself.

“Investors are not idiots and there is simply no value in the company. The Glazers want to have their cake and eat it – the share structure shows they want to retain complete and utter control.”

He says there are plenty of other more attractive investments, where shareholders get a dividend and the chance for capital growth.

While acknowledging that, “debt free, Manchester United is a good business”, Mr Jarman sees no such value at Old Trafford given its current debt position. In fact, he argues the club is massively overvalued.

Forbes magazine recently pronounced United, at $2.2bn, the most valuable club in world sport. Reports suggest the Glazers themselves value the club at around this level.

And yet less than two years ago, a group of investors lead by the respected chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O’Neill, valued the club at about $1.5bn. With two years of global economic stagnation since then, the club’s value will not have risen significantly.

Factor in operating profits – minus transfer activity – of $150m, and Mr Jarman argues investors are better off buying Tesco shares.
