Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

  1. the long wait is over on

Who was the ref who’s well known to have boasted on the , ahem, “after dinner circuit” that he never officiated in a game that Rangers lost?

  2. Foxy..,

I think you are being very naive

The plc board are legally responsible to protect ALL their shareholders interests, by refusing to take action on proven malfeasance they are condoning the fraud and working to the agenda of a minority of the shareholders to the detriment of all other shareholders. That’s the bottom line whether you like it or not. I think.

Irrespective of their “plans” they are incumbent to protect the rights and interests of every shareholder. They are quite obviously not doing that, else every shareholder would have a bigger dividend. Being cheated out of a minimum of £20M is no small matter except to a few and that few appear to be making the decisions that its not worth enquiring about.

  3. BOBBYMURDOCH’S

From earlier. Like many on here it was always a mystery how many of the Lisbon Lions were moved out after 1970. I read an interview with Willie Wallace a couple of weeks back, think it was Tom English, where he gave his account of his going to Crystal Palace, in 1971 if I remember correctly. It is obvious now that the Celtic Board made that decision and not Jock Stein though it was Big Jock who put the proposition to him. Now, of course, players like Macari, Dalglish and Davidson were graduates by then, and as Jimbo67 pointed out Brian McLaughlin was beginning to get some game time, but even so the manner of his leaving was a disgrace.

Bobby Tait I think . Until his last game – Killie scored a breakaway goal at Ibrox in injury time. May 1998.

Just watched some ole footage of ‘Stone the Crows’ and it got me thinkin’ about Taggart.

Clearly the eponymous hero is long gone to a better place, but they just carried on as if nothin’ had happened.

It reminded me for no good reason of a plucky cash strapped football team from the south of Glasgow.

It was the father and son duo of Willie and David Syme to whom Jock was referring when he made those comments after the 1977/78 League Cup Final.

Davidson, Syme and J R P Gordon all cut from the same cloth.

    Burghbhoy @ 20:10…

I am sure that Rangers (1872/73 – 2012) name is not actually engraved on the Scottish Cup itself (on the plinth not the cup). They won it in 1903 and never saw it again until 1928.

How exquisite is it to think that all of his years of favouritism culminated in that match at Ibrox , which was his last ever game and which he specifically requested , which pretty much blew their quest for 10 in a row.

The only one of our records , the other being the Big Cup , of course , they ever had any chance of equalling.

Recently published Celtic: The Awakening is an excellent account of Celtic 1960-1980 and is heavily reliant on input from T Gemmell, B Auld and D Hay

Thoroughly recommended – I like to think I know my history but many fresh perspectives on events we are all pretty familiar with

I don’t have ‘off the radar’ IQ, but I do know that the money being paid to both club directors and holding club directors is ridiculous. It’s also ridiculous that someone who was given shares at 1p a go is also being paid £750 000 per year – not including bonus for winning league with the second highest paid squad, by some distance, in the country and it would cost £1.4M to get him to sashay his fat can outta town.

    CW had ‘£1BN under management’

CG opined that he had ‘3 billionaires’ keen to invest

SDM was going to build a casino, hotel, floating pitch and megastore whilst investing in basketball and ice hockey (similar to NUFC under the Sheppards)

CG was going to take them to England

CW had a £25M war chest for the gutbucket

SDM was only going to sell (reluctantly) to someone with the club’s(not the holding company’s) best interest at heart

CG never lied to anyone about anything

CW didn’t cook up the plan to get CG to front a scheme whereby CW was still the owner after the business went where it shouldn’t have gone according to CW

Prior is going to look under the hood…
