  1. Ange,” The purpose of these games,is not to win them, but to prepare the team to win the games that count”

    Exactly.

See we are getting a new bar and an “Almore Cafe”.

You are TB and I claim my NL 25th anniversary t-shirt.

Never thought that “you / he” would slum it in Bognor.

  3. Mooy,.and Lens will play on Sunday.

I can see CQN now,”Not what we need, not a mythical defensive mid”

    “Lenz is useless.Just another Jullien”

    Oh yes.

  4. Interesting to see how the new bar / cafe will work in practice?

Hopefully it is a roaring success and encourages the board to get cracking with the various stadium upgrades.

Considering going along on Saturday as I think we have a warm up match and there isn’t much else to do

Is this the last of our pre season games or is there another one midweek ?

    ____

This is the last game. The real stuff starts, eight days later, Sunday at 4:30 PM. Ridiculous time for our first match. Maybe the BBC suggested it as a way of appeasing the huns.

Free of all sponsorship duties after about 20 years of those I will be there this season for sure. If tolerated of course !!!!

Minnesota United absolutely crush Everton 4-0 in a pre-season game which could have easily been 8-0. Having already lost 2-0 to Arsenal, manager Frank Lampard is extremely unhappy with his team.

  9. McFadden for Celtic is a bigger myth than Steven Fletcher would have won us the league.

    10/11 Ever. (Prem) 7 0

    11/12 Sund. (Prem) 3 0

He cost Everton £1.25m and scored 11 EPL goals in 116 apps. over 5 whole seasons

Birmingham paid £5m for this non-scorer for 13 goals in 82 apps. over 3 whole seasons

Sunderland took him on trial but did not give him a contract and he returned on a free to his comfort level, Motherwell, to score 9 in 40 over 2 seasons

Remember he was not a winger in all games- he was a support striker- so these figures are telling.

The managers who bought him were Davie Moyes and Alex McLeish. Moyes made a profit on him as English transfer fees were mad back then (and still are)

The managers who got rid of him were Davie Moyes and Chris Hughton.

The Sunderland manager who refused to sign him after his trial was Martin O’Neill

Could you put your comment “And UKIP is considered progressive” into prospective, only people who i am aware of who would consider UKIP progressive would be combat 18, the white wolves, the EDL essex saracens or the Pie and Mash Squad, for me UKIP are far right.

Also is it coincidence that you seem to constantly jump from one negative thing to another?

Is there some reason i have never see a positive post about any aspect of our football club.

  11. Iniquitous,

What, your not at all worried by Everton losing 6 goals?.Was that idiot goalkeeper from Everton just standing on his line as the balls flew past him .Maybe Joe Hart is not so bad off his line .You think?

Just pointing out the folly of putting too much importance on warm up games.

  13. DB @ 2.14

You are listening to too much gossip on CQN corner.

I have had plenty positive to say about AP and the style of game he is trying to get us to play — incredible achievement after the DD / PL / NL omni-shambles of 20/21 and before.

    Consequently …

Very positive about the effort AP is putting in.

Very positive about the players and attitudes that he has brought in.

Very positive about the standard of play we can play at.

Regarding my comments about nativist thought in the south / south east of England — remember that UKIP is the public face of this political view.

UKIP say what they can get away with in the media without it curdling the milk / getting them into trouble with the courts / mainstream civic thought.

What they — party and voters – really think / discuss in private is another matter and that really would spoil the milk. I lived down there — SSE / Sunny South Essex — for 11 years so I have some first hand experience of the mindset and how far right it can stretch.

Strange bunch — right across the income scale — who live on myths / WW2 propaganda / Empire loyalism / Thatcher worship / tabloid trash.

They need to be educated and some need to be pitied.

  14. IniquitousIV on

    ( Amended from yesterday )

    SUPERSUTTON

“But by then Joe Hart being that far out of his goal will have prevented a number of chances / goals and also help the defence to beat the opposition’s attempted press.”

    ———————————

Great players who are positionally aware of the whole field ( past example are Beckham and Rooney ) will instantly convert a change in possession to an easily lobbed goal if a keeper is 35 yards out of his goal. We recently saw Schick for the Czech Republic make Marshall look ridiculous, like a fish stuck in a net, with a lob from fully 50 yards, and there are many better players than Schick in the CL Group Stage.

Now focus on our penchant for losing possession in Europe, often by passing straight to the opposition. Having Joe ( who is no Usain Bolt ) near the halfway line is folly, especially when the opposition players will be far faster than those of the mediocre opposition we have met so far. He has already lost a daft goal in Vienna by being out of position and being slow to collect an errant back pass. In the Czech Republic, an Ostrava player lobbed it past the post when it was easier to score, with Joe completely stranded. A few days ago, Charlie Mulgrew passed directly into his own goal against Sunderland as his keeper was isolated in no man’s land. Another example is Arsenal and England keeper Seamans getting lobbed from 50 yards in a Europa League Final. These gaffes demoralize the team and make the players look foolish.

But don’t worry – I don’t come on here saying I was right, even although I occasionally am.

Quite a few Euro Conference Qualifiers on Paramount Plus today. For those who are breathlessly awaiting the result, ( and I know there are many of you 😊 ), Kazakhstan club Kyzyl-Zhar is 0-2 down at home after 80 minutes to Croatian club Osijek.

You win today’s 20/20 hindsight award for your comments on JMcF.

What you don’t seem to be able to rationalise is the context of the summer of 2003.

Made it to the EuCF — very unlucky to lose against a very good Porto side.

We were on an upward curve and we needed to keep going.

Our performance highlighted the importance of a quality GK.

It also showed how big we were as a club and how much bigger we could become.

So life in the slow lane with BQ man-marking both MO’N and the chequebook was not what was needed to drive us on to the next level — we lost much more than the transfer fee due to our inability to grow.

HL needed to be replaced — away in June 2004 — on the park as well as a club icon.

That would be forward planning in old money.

JMcF was the best choice in 2003 regarding engagement and ability.

He was available at an affordable price and he was willing to come.

Huge talent who would have grown with us — he was / became a talent in the EPL no matter what your partial use of data tells us.

    .

That he went for £5mill after a good but patchy Everton stint says a lot.

2003/04 was a good season for us but it just confirmed how small minded the board had become after DD got his knockback from the EPL.

So instead of M/well selling us the gravy — JMcF.

We had to go back 6 months later to get the brawn. — SP.

He turned out to be our dynamic / energy player in the last 4 months of the season.

That is how far and how fast we were falling — squad and MO’N phoning it in.

Even HL was gutted that we couldn’t make the CL knock-out rounds.

Plus the LM shock of his new found MU love was very hard to take.

JMcF would have made a huge difference to the club.

He was our loss and we paid a high price for our miss.

And so did DD with the emergency rights issue in 2005 that the bank forced upon him — not good.

Spent a great holiday in Malcesine, a small town on the shores of Lake Garda. Very handy for bus trips to Verona, Venice, Florence and the Dolomites. Rome just a couple of hours by train.

    Lovely part of the world.

    ………………..

Was in Malcesine in 2019. Took a tour of the Lake and visited most of the towns. Ribs has a very Austrian influence. Part of our tour was by coach and part by boat. This is my fourth time here in 20+ years. I’ve only ever stayed in Garda but I like to get around and visit the other places.

    Saw the first 30 minutes.

    Saw the last 30 minutes.

The difference between the two is the big worry.

We took our time in the first half but hen we got on it we were looking very good.

The second half included some of our better players but we looked a different team.

The cohesion had gone / the desire had gone / the energy had gone.

We made their stiffs look good after showing up their firsts.

DT and YI had a chance to shine and they didn’t — very anonymous until YI put in few challenges in the last 10 minutes.

Seems to follow a pattern — the first team give their all and the second team look for inspiration but rarely find it — suggests we still have a lot of work to do mentally as well as physically.

Player pathway — who will make their mark this season from the B team / youths?

First up did anyone come through last season — doesn’t look like it to me?

AM — played but not good enough for this season — sent out on loan.

OM — played but currently seen as a B team player.

Going by the squad set up three to look out for:

JK — he has played and scored in the pre-season.

AR — nothing so far / had a bad injury last season.

DM — again nothing so far.

Plus the SW — repeat SW not SU — pair who look very much like NL’s last hurrah.

Hopefully somebody comes through and makes his mark.
