No extended debate from me tonight but….

What Me and posters like me, who back the strategy, are responsible for is the fact that Celtic are still alive and in a position to thrive. I know you will say that you only wanted a small sustainable spend but, frankly, I don’t believe that you are being honest with yourself. We will always have a reason to spend. Every time a player has a bad game, the impatient will want to sign a ready made replacement rather than grow your own or coach your own. Then you end up with a chequebook manager.

I am not selling a Polyanna vision. My story of Celtic has always been that these have been the good times. We have bumped our gums and gurned through the good times as if we have had collective amnesia about the 25 years that ended with the millenium. I have always said we are punching above our weight. I have always said we risk defeat in every qualification match, even against lesser teams. I have never bought the view that spending maximises your chances because we got Robbie Keane and we bombed. A £5m spend would not buy you Robbie Kene’s metatarsal these days.

I don’t defend tonights disaster anymore than I defended the 6:1 defeat by Barca but both events were predictable, and I forecast they would happen one day, even though I am shocked by tonights performance and scoreline.

Ronny messed up tonight for sure. Many players did too. The time to judge them is not yet reached. Is he a Mowbray or a Strachan? Can he recover? Can he learn and compromise? Give the man time.

  2. eddieinkirkmichael on

Don’t know what happened tonight, can’t agree with all the doom and gloom merchants. We lost, badly, against an average team who man for man were better on the night.

Yes questions need to be asked but first we have a game against Legia next week where our team need us to come out and give them our suppot.

I’ll be there giving them my backing and I hope we can turn it around, if we don’t well it’s not the end of the world. I’ll give the new management team my support and let him get on with building a team that plays football the way he want it played.

I still think Ronny is the right man for the job, he made a catalogue of errors tonight which I hope he acknowleges and rectifies for the next leg. We’re all hurting just now but did anyone seriously think he would just come in and wave a majic wand and everything would be great is deluded. We have known for long time that this team needed changed and our stylle of play was limited, let’s give the new management team a bit of support and just maybe they can turn this around.

    What alternative do we have?

  3. Clashcitybhoy on

    Tiny Tim,

Agree with you on academic stuff.

Sometimes you need to trust your instincts, and I am going to trust mine on this one.

Ronny D won’t be a long term success at Celtic.

  4. There can be no excuses for that performance tonight.

A team full of international players that cannot kick the ball to each other.

Decision making from some players is ridiculous.

Second to every ball a total shambles.

  5. I wouldn’t be too harsh on Ron. Some of the defending and ball retention tonight looked like Sunday league stuff. I wouldn’t blame a guy just in through the door.

The Board have failed to invest. Again.

If VVD and Forster go, I’m not sure how we build. That ain’t a good team that spanked us tonight. Celtic seem to be directionless at the moment. No amount of spin tomorrow will convince me our club is being run right. That was disgraceful.

  6. A lot of highly-regarded, highly-paid professionals let themselves and their new management team down tonight, not to mention the hopes of the travelling faithful who will never know the riches those incompetent passengers wallow in.

As with Artmedia and Utrecht, some eye-opening deficiences were made apparent. The sort of deficiences you scratch your head in wonder at.

1-0 up after 8 minutes, comfortable on the ball, and still dangerpous despite a sloppy equalizer conceded. Then, thanks to the complete ineptitude of a few, the team crumbles.

When you have a mercurial player like Efe who, at the dip of a shoulder or the flick of his boot can incur glory or calamity, you often in high-pressure occasions invite disaster which spreads through the side like a virus.

As against Juventus. Players fragilities are exposed, just as they were on the cusp of thoroughly decent performances.

Felt like we were witnessing that tonight- a collective mental collapse; all at sea at the back similar to Barcelona last year.

The players blew it tonight. Not the manager. Not the much-maligned board – our value on that pitch well eclipsed Legia.

This calamity was down to 11 v 11. And then 10.

The players cannot hide behind the howls of les miserables and screams about finances, investment and downsizing.

Even downsized, we should be sitting comfortably in this tie.

No, tonight was the players nadir – like Atrmedia was for that (much more expensive) squad.

The players owe us. The players owe their manager. The players owe Celtic and themselves a performance good enough to see us through.

The players shouldn’t be allowed to hide.

It will still be 11 v 11 next week. Our 11 had better get some balls about them and play to their reputations.

I will now retire on vacation while the moon is howled at. Poor moon, I hope it’s ready…

We won’t spend or don’t have the money to sign the players we desperately need.

    TT

  8. Why has Biton not featured under RD? Surely he would have been ideal in a game like tonight, sitting on front of our central defence, covering from the bomb scare. He should at least have come on at half time instead of Kayal who runs around aimlessly giving away free kicks and the ball in equal measure.

  9. Ryecatcher,

your sole purpose of posting on here is to antagonise Celtic supporters,

away and just post on your beloved Liverpool blogs,

  10. The No.13 Shorts on

    Everyone……

Relax. After some long deep breaths, ask yourself the following question; “What did getting to the Champions League group stages last year achieve for investment in the team?” That’s right. Nothing. It’s the very reason we are in the situation we find ourselves right now.

So……..no biggy in the grand scheme of things.

  11. P67 et al

    Before I let rip …

Can someone tell me the team formation?

After all my pontificating about talent management today — who played LB?

    I was very lucky tonight.

Over at the in-laws for a family dinner.

    Missed the whole “sorry shambles”.

Just like I missed Artmedia Part 1.

    How bad was it?

  12. And CRC, I was embarrassed by the club once.

It had nothing to do with football.

A performance like that can happen early in a managers tenure.

    We will bounce back.

  13. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

    Guys.

    Let’s look at this.

Do we have a team that is capable of scoring three goals against this team?

The answer to that is yes we do.

There are two things to bear in mind however.

They will come to Murrayfield and defend a three goal lead — that means sitting fairly deep, ceding us possession, and playing on the break.

Do we have a team who is capable of conceding a goal against this team playing like that?

On tonight’s performance — yes we do as we were absolutely hopeless at the back.

Now I will be in Edinburgh shouting my team on, but like Mike in Toronto what I can’t understand how we could have players like Commons, Mulgrew, Lustig, Matthews, Johansen, Ambrose, Van Dyk, Kayal and so on who simply could not make two consecutive passes for long periods of the game, could not track back, could not trap the ball and so on.

Forget the board for the minute. Forget the manager. What the hell happened to our players?

When we scored four at Celtic park against Bratislava this was our team:

Boruc, Telfer, Balde, McManus, Camara, Petrov, Lennon, Thompson (Aliadiere 87), Wallace (Maloney 53), Zurawski (Beattie 63), Hartson.

Subs Not Used: Marshall, McGeady, O’Dea, Lawson.

Is this a better team than we have now?

Were there more goals in that team than this one?

Celtic Football Club is a great football club and it does many brilliant things.

But at the end of the day we are all represented by the eleven to take to the field and I do not know what happened tonight but the team was awful in every department.

Like others, I did not understand the selection process at all.

I can only hope that we never play like that again because if we do we will win nothing this season domestically let alone a single game in Europe.

  14. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

I like what Ronnie is trying to do but it will take two to three seasons. The. poisoned chalice was givem to him by the board. To expect such a drastic change in style and to still qualify for the CL is unrealistic.

The opportunity to build am attractive team on the cheap to allow Sevco recovery room was am opportunity that the board were never going to turn down. I genuinely believe that they believe they are doing well for us. All tories do. I dont mean that in a political way.

Lenny was here before remember Sion. I fully expect another similar cycle of development with ongoing decimation coupled with the continued communication control via saatchi & Saatchi

We need more ambitious more philanthropic custodians. I dont like how we are being ran at all. They are taking the piss

  15. SFTB you are taking the usual lazy route believing I or any other celtic supporter wants a spend that will put is at risk. It’s bolloks but just the usual from people making excuses.

Celtic have gone beyond the pale with regards to their so called strategy. We are an outlier and clearly stupid ideas like Moneyball now dominate in the boardroom. Why?mwhats the point of all this?

    Celtic are a needless shambles.

Do not have the players to play the game RD wants to see. Unfortunately .

    ===========================================================

That may well be true, however the Title is Manager so you manage the resource you have and migrate to your preferred profile.

Tonight was crazy starting a non proven Cardiff reserve straight into a Euro tie, that decision is right up there with Frank Munro and John Dowie in the Jock era ,and the inclusion by Macari of Holt,Muggleton, and Biggins.

At 2-1 we needed legs so why not Henderson.

Lost a lot of confidence in the new Mgmt group, as based on comments and press coverage these were basic errors I never dreamed would have been committed.

  18. West Wales Celt on

Seville feels a long way away tonight.

I’m no football manager but the selections, set-up and substitutions seemed all wrong.

We were playing on scraps and had our slowest player as a lone frontman, bizarre frankly.

Not one good performance and plenty of god-awful ones.

I’d love a miracle but can’t honestly see it happening.

Crazy calling for Ronny’s head though is nuts.

The guy needs time and one disaster is forgiveable if he can learn from it.

Hoping for a good performance next week.

Anything else is most definitely a bonus…

He needs time and we need better players

  19. Awe naw I agree. It’s clearly important t to the board that the new Hun can compete with us. Nearly there Peter eh? You will be praying they get into the premiership eh?

I pray we get through to the CL as I can’t see the Europa league being an attraction for the decent players we desperately need..

How many decent players have Celtic signedin the wake of qualifying for CL in the last two seasonbs?

  24. Snake Plissken on

There is little you can say about a disaster like that than other people have not said.

All day I sensed this coming and sadly I was right.

I had the feeling that in a transitional year like this the Europa League would be better for Celtic.

The players who did so well for us when we were in the last 16 have by and large gone.

Hooper, Wanyama, Ledley, Samaras, Wilson and yes even Tony Watt are no longer with us and as a result we have been humiliated by a decent team but not an outstanding team by any stretch of the imagination.

Last season teams got through Celtic in Europe with ease. This has not been sorted out.

By next week our best players will have been sold to the EPL and we’ll have a keeper who hasn’t played football for two years and we’ll still have Efe Ambrose having calamity after calamity with Mulgrew not far behind.

Are we still good enough to take the SPL for granted this year?

    I am not so sure.

It’s going to be the hardest title to win this year with a manager playing such an open system against teams who all play with 5 across the middle and on the break.

The board must be blamed for this. It was their policy that brought us to this point. The signs were there with Neil Lennon leaving, Mjallby leaving before him and the Samaras affair.

The message is a simple one no matter how you spin it – this club sells its best players and doesn’t intend to replace them with anything approaching the same quality unless we get lucky.

It will also see if we get lucky and get into Europe with a squad of players who are average at best.

Well the luck it would seem has run out and Celtic park is going to be a morgue this season.

Who in their right mind is going to pay to watch that?

Am I right in saying that Celtic park is not being used for any more Commonwealth games events?

If it isn’t why on earth isn’t the stadium available?

Without the full support of the fans we won’t get past Legia or anybody else who is decent.

No European football this season IS a disaster and Ronny will be lucky to stay in a job even if he wins the league.

For the record I couldn’t care less about trebles, I want to see European games. It looks like a very long season ahead from here.

We lost a football match.. some people in Gaza will lose much more tonight.

We all say it but time to believe it … KEEP THE FAITH !!

Oh FFS,Thats all we need, someone bringing Gaza into it.Pathetic.

  26. mullet and co 2 on

Legia aren’t Karagandy and I expect us to go out next week. I wouldn’t have xpected to beat Legia 3 nil at home (temp or not) before tonight and I certainly don’t expect us to score without reply next week.

I take it we can qualify for the Europa league stages if we go out next week via another knockout?

If we do then maybe like Lenny Ronny can cut his teeth some more on Europa League games where the pressure is a bit less.

If we go out after a further Europa League group and domestic results are shaky the Neganon can look forward to the inquest from whoever it was at Celtic Park that pursued Keane. Peter Lawell may find himself walking quickly behind Ronnie, JC, McGuiness et al.

Positives? Callum McGregor could be worth a couple of million now on the big spreadsheet.

I mentioned before the game that I was worried about Ronnie playing too open. It was worse than that, we played too open, couldn’t pass, tackle, mark, nothing worked. Forster even looked suspect despite great saves.

Chances are we will play a team in the same bracket as Legia in a qualifier for the Europa. I hope we are prepared for that. Otherwise it won’t just be Forster, Van Dyke and an other that go.
