Gary67. Rony called it wrong tonight but as some one pointed out in an earlier post Efe let him down badly and for whatever reason big Charlie decided to have a nightmare. We can only hope that next week Legia are over confident and we can get another early goal.If Rony is half the manager we all hope he is he will have learned from tonight. H.H.

Is there any reason to think that if like tonight, we get an early goal, we will not go on to make a right erchie of it.

We are in a situation where Legia only need to get lucky once.

  2. I will remember tonight for two reasons.

Good….The welcome from the Wimbledon CSC

    Bad….no need to explain.

I have seen primary teams who did not give the ball away as easily as we did tonight.

And, so much for the improved fitness….tongues were hanging out as we watch them go past.

Mega disappointed tonight but many congratulations to Warsaw on the way the ripped us apart.

Lots of the usual, all too easy, reflexive and often agendised comments already, doubtless plenty more to come.

Not just on here, but elsewhere. I see McNally, formerly of this parish, vomiting out the same ill-considered finger pointing, and plenty others besides. Bravo! Bravo!

This wee script of course will be lost amongst the angst and the mob’s pursuit of the perpetrator, but for what it’s worth, here it is.

The team was spooked. Players normally reliable doubted themselves and their purpose. They got a fright, and didn’t recover from it. They couldn’t rely on their team mates or themselves. Something was wrong.

I’d suggest the source of that was the decision to field Berget from the start.

Moreover, our two stellar central defenders gave the performance they’ve been promising for a number of months. They, the two of them, are giving every indication of taking themselves more seriously than the Game. Big mistake. Ambrose will self-admonish given his red card, but van Dijk needs some serious man management, and damned quickly.

And then we have the bizarre situation where the defence has no uniform understanding of what the job is. We played as a zig zag at the back, players randomly 10 yards ahead or behind the line, a line set far too high in the first place.

Whatever the players have been asked to do, they don’t understand it collectively.

And then there’s a second half performance in which we gift a further two goals through the same issues – lack of defensive shape and/or failings of mentality in our central defence – we then rely on the goalkeeper to save in unlikely circumstances in a number of other gifted chances, and give 2 penalties away in absurdity.

The final goal took the biscuit. Quite remarkable in its dysfunction.

Of course, we’ve been here before. Lennon had a horrific time in Europe in the early years, Strachan before him is still scarred, and even MON was shown up.

Tonight though was a rerun of the Artmedia game, a combination of complacency amongst our better players and inadequate team instruction from the manage. The final goal was truly awful to watch for the manager, confirming the folly of his adapted game plan, and the failing of his communication.

Ronny Deila came very close tonight to inheriting wee Gordon’s broken watch. He might get it yet. Over to him to figure it out, and damned quickly at that.

His good fortune is that Legia missed 2 penalties that would have put the tie beyond doubt. It’s not beyond doubt, but it’s needing a Rocket Man type escape.

    Ronny the Rocket Man?

    Or Ronny the Rocket?

    Tune in next week when…

Love the atmosphere around Glasgow at the moment, it appears the guid folk of glesga are making the games unforgettable, if only we had a team of Glaswegians on the pitch tonight all born within a 30 mile radius of Celtic Park……………………

  7. Lionsroar67,

But the parallels with TM are there for all to see already, you don’t get that time

    at Celtic.

Attack, attack, attack – no defensive midfielder on the park, till it was too late,

right backs at left back, is school boy stuff.

    THE EXILED TIM

W don’t need to spend to get quality in.

Look at the lower reaches of La Liga, most teams there are bought for nothing, teams like Rayo Vallecano go through virtually a team a year, yet they manage to survive, and IMO would wipe the floor with us.

    ——————-

Exactly, we spend far to much on average players and pay them far to much a week.

Sure criticise the board but damn they spend money (it;s in the books) and mostly it’s on players that can’t trap a ball, can’t get with their weak foot, can’t go 90 mins without struggling, or can’t go 10 games in a row without missing a month of football (on full wages),

Exactly. Mediocrity as long as it is cheap, is the name of the game.

  12. Quigleyspoint on

Shambles tonight, nothing else. Forget about big money deals and great signings, we will never ever go down that road again til we are in another league. Naw truth is tonight we couldnt pass, keep the ball, defend, keep our shape, simple football etiquette, we could not do, the ball was like a hot tottie at times, We started with the wrong players in the team, played out of position, but those who started should have given us a better account of themselves. Mathews positioning, mulgrews positioning, ffs…..I could go on all night……it really was an amateur display. If we are out of the traps early next wednesday who knows what could happen…..but I ask myself, on this showing and all the pre season games that I have seen…it may be better to give europe a miss this season, and get back to basics. Methinks that is what is required. Scunnered c.s.c.

  13. The Green Man

Its a simple formula….and I will repeat it.

If you don’t spend money to improve your team, and sell your best players.

You wont be a CL team…

I don’t care how much Legia spend….im talking about us

    ————

You keep on saying it but it doesnt make sense, why does spending money make us a better team? A CL team? We were a CL team last season despite selling players (but we were awful), we haven’t sold anyone this season but probably won’t make the CL. Money at our level isn’t the answer.

Snake Plissken, I think Celtic Park will need to be resurfaced given what was on it last week. With recent heat I can’t see that being done until now or next week.

  19. eddieinkirkmichael on

I’m off to bed and hopefully my dreams will be of the erotic kind and not of the nightmare kind I witnessed earlier.

Moonhowlers, be good, kids read this blog don’t ya know :)

  20. Firstly, we will not qualify. Legia had some good individuals who could turn our defence – they will score in Edinburgh, although Celtic will win.

As a couple of the (less hysterical) posters have said, this was a tactical failure. We had too few bodies in the middle of the park. Most players were poor, but often the system left them overrun. Having gone a goal up, we should have settled for that until at least half time, instead we continued to play open football – enjoyable to watch, but very risky.

So the manager got it wrong. I’m willing to cut him some slack for a while. He’s had 3 competitive games and there are people on here who are saying that he’s not up to the job! Maybe he isn’t but we just don’t know. Was Alex Ferguson up to the United job for the first few years of his ilustrious reign?

Yes, we should have invested. For a chance of £20m champions league money, we can afford to spend a couple of million. We spent around £800k on Leigh Griffiths as our main striker, and we sold Tony Watt, who couldn’t command a first team place, for £1.2m. I mostly agree with the moneyball concept, but you still need to spend something (VVD cost a couple of million). Still, what does two or three milion buy you nowadays? Would we have paid £3m for Ryan Gauld? We DID pay £2m for Derk.

Just another thought. The last few years have been good for Celtic, but take that one Barcelona result out of the equation, and a lot changes. We have done well, but we do need to keep things in perspective.

Tonight was bad though, we still have a lot to learn and a lot to accept. But I’m still a fan.

  21. On holiday so have not seen the game only the score!

Football is basically a simple game – managers who profess belief in a philosophy tend to give me the fear!

Mr Stein looked at the players he had and then formed a way of playing that got the best out of them as individuals and then as a team.

He also believed that games are won and lost in the middle of the park

From what I have read about this pre-season it looks as though Ronny has a system but not the players to play it – that gives me the fear!

Let’s not kid ourselves players will take any excuse to pass blame on to someone else

If they are not convinced by the new ways they will turn in performances that can lead to the manager getting the boot

The board need to either back their man with money to bring in the players he wants and to get rid of those not pulling their weight or get shot of the manager and bring in someone who can work with them

Failure to do one or the other will just prolong the agony until results get so bad that the board is forced to act – as happened with Mogga!

  22. BigChipsUK – There are only two SPL teams in Glasgow… Celtic and Partick Thistle

    ——-

    They don’t

But you know as well as I do

We have players for sale in the team

    We have a new coach

And we are downsizing the bill

Not our fault of course just the market we work in

Ronnie has dysfunctional team at the mo

    I will grant you that

But what did you expect from an “experimental manager”

    Except an experiment

  23. Don’t think Mr Desmond will be too happy tonight!!!!

Mr Lawwell may have won a battle but Mr Desmond may yet win the war!!

  24. Neg Anon

“SFTB you are taking the usual lazy route believing I or any other celtic supporter wants a spend that will put is at risk. It’s bolloks but just the usual from people making excuses.”

I said there would be no lengthy debate. This one is easily solved. Show me a football forum anywhere in the world where, after a defeat, any fan says “the last thing we need is more spending, the team is fine”. We will always call for more spending because we will always be dis-satisfied. Out there will always have a better LB, DM, or CF and we could have him if we only spent.

We can pick this up some other time.

“Your attempts at brainwashing are way beyond pathetic now.”

Hiya Kev! You’re wasting your time on me. Uncle Hughie will give you a better hearing on the DR hotline

  25. Ernie, would a new owner not want the money from Sevco too?

A new owner may be more profit orientated?

We know the devil, why invite his bad brother?

  26. Trying to work out the team.

Unfortunately all the Euro qualifier schoolboy howlers are in place.

LB shenanigans — EI not available then try a square peg in a round hole = Check

    4 – 2 – 4 Formation = Check

    It might be 4 – 2 – 3 – 1 but the result is the same.

Two man midfield with slow as week in the jail CM = Check.

Emergency signing sent straight in = Check

Anyone of any quality playing with a big price-tag on their shirt = Check.

    **********

Every basic mistake on show tonight.

My only question is who do we have that should have been on the park?

I know of many we did have who should have been on the park.

Finally Liberian bloke who has been scouted — Just what is the story?

He was in the papers 11 weeks ago — Why the delay?

If we follow the path of 2005 he will be paraded at a ridiculous cost in 4 days time.

    SN all over again.

What is it going to take…for people to realise how badly this PLC run Celtic.

Sevco winning the league next season.

Seriously thrashed tonight, but still they clap.

If the PLC wont spend any money on the team, why should anybody else?
