Lennon a better manager than England appears to believe

542

I know what you’re thinking.  After the media heavyweights told you, on the day Neil Lennon resigned from Celtic, that he was going because he was unhappy with the amount of money he had to spend, pitching up at Bolton Wanderers is a bit curious.  What you were told that day was nonsense, deliberately headlined to undermine Celtic.

Neil had been in the shop window since the Everton job came up in May 2013 and had long decided he wanted a crack at managing in England before the end of last season.

On paper, the Bolton job looks daunting.  The club are bottom of the second tier of English football, while those immediately above them, Blackpool, Fulham, Wigan and Birmingham, like Bolton have recently had Premier League experience.  It’s early enough in the season that survival is a reasonable expectation, but Neil will know little about the squad he takes over, or about their ability to step up.

Taking this job is a huge risk to an accomplished CV but so is spending an extended period on the side-lines as an out-of-work manager.  Whatever the reasons he didn’t land a better job over the summer, Neil is a better manager than the English clubs appear to believe.  He’ll get Bolton organised and picking up points against teams with better players, just as he did regularly in Europe with Celtic.

In other news many of the same media heavyweights referred to above today report Arsenal are preparing a bid for a Celtic player, in January.  After selling us the same story that the same player would be subject to the same bid back in August.

It’s as though they have space to fill on the sports pages and there’re not been a lot of football recently.

How are you bearing up with Ronny’s selections?

Do I detect a little barb there?

I am not bearing up at all, he is unfathomable and I am not impressed.

My annoyance as stated with NL was he was/is a fan and knew the significance of his actions yet was stubborn in his repetitive selections.

I have always held the view he (NL) needed a number 2 to debate things with as opposed to being compliant. Just my view.

  8. Would love to think somebody could give Stan a helping hand and get him a decent job in the game coaching.

He may be enjoying his non league games but hopefully bigger people in football will ensure he gets what he deserves.

If that is over 35 Sunday morning league for now so be it but in the future?

Class act from a recent game Stan played in:

“When the referee awarded a penalty for an apparent foul on Petrov, he even discreetly told the official the defender got the ball enabling the decision to sportingly” be reversed.

  11. The RK many audi story doesn’t surprise me. In his younger days RK rented a house in Hayfield near Manchester… A relative of mine lives there and knows the owner.. He had a pretty big clean up job after RK departed.. Wilfull disrespect of others property is not an attractive attribute imo

Is payment of a living wage a matter purely for shareholders to determine?

    >> No(it could become policy at the drop of a board meeting)its not a matter for shareholders only..imo tho a club like Celtic should have this as a matter of the clubs wages/salaries policy(part of its ethos/culture) without the issue being raised annually at agm time.Celtic are always heralding what we do as fans in the name of its charitable history,as a fan I am asking Celtic to implement a living wage as a show of leadership in todays econonic climate.<<<

Or reverse, is payment of a living wage a matter that non shareholders should determine?

▶▶By an outside govt body, yes, in same way minimun wage is overseen, but it needs our club to take the step◀

Or should payment of a living wage be determined by supporters who contribute nothing financially to Celtic or only by those who do?

I have no problem with the principle at all and would be happy to contribute a bit more to the cost by for example an increase in my S, but I think those who will bear the cost are the ones who should make the decision. To make an informed decision

I would like to know the cost and how it is to be met.

An increase in ST is only one solution.Other internal costs can be cut but at what cost to service if running costs or football quality if in football operations?I’m pretty certain that with all the relevant information and options laid out the support would be happy to meet the cost in whatever form it takes, but I’d like to know the different possibilities before making a decision.

▶▶the costs are important, if they were to become part of the costs of aligning a living wage within the Celtic ethos/social polic then that cost would be worth paying.

I would like a full review and analysis of how the wage can be implemented of all affected so no poverty traps are opened up and I think savings can be made in the overall wages/salaries dept that can be passed onto those on a living wage.

As a note of interest and I did not know this until recently

Headlines on stories in papers are hee haw to do with the Journo, or in sports writing case the PR representative, who writes the story. The Sub Editors do the headlines and often the journo’s are pee’d off at what the subs come up with as much as those who read the sories and see no relation between story and headline.

    Nature of the game apparently.

    ————————————————————————————————————-

As long as the club is structured as a plc then this is a right and proper matter for shareholders. Last year the club chairman stated that it would cost in the region of £500,000 to implement. If we paid our CEO the going market rate for running an enterprise with our annual turnover then this would easily cover the additional costs associated with paying all staff the living wage as a minimum.

  18. I’ve been watching a few clips of Maradona this afternoon.

I’m of an age where I believed Pele was the best ever but have had to re-assess that over time.

One thing that’s puzzled me regards Maradona is that his club career wasn’t what you’d expect from one of the best players ever, and I guess you could say the same for Pele, so why was that?
