Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

430

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

  6. Good morning all from a dry but threatening looking East Kilbride.

Genuine question for this morning. I’ve seen countless folk mention that as our tie was the one drawn out first, we should have had priority over (a) the venue and (b) the kick off time – usually summarised as ‘we should be playing first and at Hampden’. But is there any factual basis for that argument? My memory of semi final draws is that the ties are drawn and then there’s usually a short mention along the lines of ‘ties to be played on the weekend of …..”. But I’ve no knowledge of whether the order of the games reflect the order that the teams were drawn out.

Anyway, a working day for me so it’s Hi Ho time for Jobo ;-)

  7. For the sake of repeating myself this morning I hope the numerous Celtic supporter organisations have organised a wee get together

Incidentally what happens to all our far traveling fans who have already made arrangements to be in Glasgow for 7.45 on this day. ?

    NORRIEM on 3RD OCTOBER 2018 6:32 PM

Time for the Association, affiliation, trust etc, to get together and organise an official Bhoy- cott, of not only this up game, but now all away game

Yes take a token 1000 tickets (more than we will actually get at huncastle, pittodrieand the hovel)

Support Celtic only, and forget the rest

And as for Celtic, now show your hand and take on the SFA, you have the evidence as provided by Res12

    Or forever bend over

  8. If it takes a boycott for our board to listen then knock yersells out I don’t go to away o cup games any more anyway. I think we only harm our team on the park when you boycott.

We need the board to take action, as a boycott is superficial unless heads roll after boycott

  9. Alasdair MacLean on

The most / best I can see coming out of this is that Celtic come at them from an angle that will force the league to admit the basis of their arbitrary and discriminating decision to decide the location if the two semi-finals.

Surely they have to give some explanation?Like: well, how about eeny, meany, miny mo…?

  10. I see Levien is saying because we were the first tie out of the hat that we should have been the Saturday and therefore the tie that gets moved….. Eh naw. The ties were to be played Saturday or Sunday. B but because us and Sevco are in Thursday night Europe then if not drawn together the ties would be the Sunday for all 4. So I reiterate our tie was out hat first we should have first option of venue and time slot on Sunday

The only supporters they need to get on board is those that regurally attend.

Subsequently, my voice is meaningless as I only go to Parkhead.

  15. Just watched Rod the mod singing Grace on BBC TV. He was being interviewed on breakfast TV by Charlie Start. Wearing a Celtic pendant Rod was asked to sing something from the album. He said I’ll sing my favourite (mentioned briefly what is was about) and gave us a few bars of Grace. One up for Rod. Magic.

I’d support some form of action over the semifinal but unless were united on it, I’ll be going.

  16. Good Post by BGFC overnight.

Too many people think posting on CQN to advocate a boycott is somehow influentual as if there is going to be a mass movement initiated from ” I read somebody online last night saying I should stop going to watch Celtic and, you know what, I think I will” . The delusion continues with the fantasy that this is going to be met by a flood of “Aye, I read that!” and “Me Too”.

If you want an effective boycott, and BGFC is right; we should not emphasise the Murrayfield issue, then we need to agitate and persuade within the circles of the CSA and Celtic Trust, or form a current Celts for Change to address the bigger issues of corruption within the Scottish game. That requires real work, not a back bar call for a revolution that gets forgotten by the 4th pint.

Otherwise, we just come across like South Park’s Mr. Mackey saying “Drugs are bad m’kay!”

  17. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

    Re-post from early hours….

    ———-

BIG GEORGES FAN CLUB – HAIL, HAIL, WEE OSCAR on 4TH OCTOBER 2018 12:42 AM

POGMATHONYAHUN AKA LAIRD OF THE SMILES on 3RD OCTOBER 2018 11:46 PM

The problem is how the whole situation has been dealt with. I think most Celtic fans would be happy with a trip to Murrayfield had a ballot been drawn and that was how the venues were allocated. The problem is the way the SPFL and basically Scottish football has gone about this with a total disregard the Celtic and the Celtic fans.

    —————————

POGMATHON – that’s essentially what I was saying earlier – not too much of a problem with the destination, but a highly dubious route to get there.

Been sitting here thinking about the Boycott discussion – I agree with CORKCELT’s post earlier which proposed that the only way for a Boycott to be effective is for it to be well-organised and backed by the CSA (and, idealy, the Club) – I agree with that.

Just for people to consider – stopping going to support Celtic is NOT easy, especially if it is something you have been lucky enough to be able to do for a very long time, or if love of and support for Celtic is something you have nurtured in your weans for many years.

Going to support Celtic at the away grounds in Scotland has been a hostile, extremely unpleasant and threatening experience in recent years – much worse since we have had a single Police Scotland.

The way we are treated makes it all the more special when we can help the team ram it right up them.

What IS easy is to put out throw-away lines like ’empty the stadium’, or ‘back of the bus’ – especially when stopping your support makes no practical difference for some who are making that demand of others.

That said, I do appreciate that the argument, and belief in the tactic. is sincere for some – I have no problem with that.

However, if we are going to call for a Boycott – if we are going to stop going to away grounds to support the Celtic team, Breandan and his coaches, if we are going to abandon them in hostile territory to fight our fight on their own – then it better be for a bloody good reason.

Small-scale gestures are meaningless in this situation.

    We need:

    – a 70% – 100% Boycott of away games -focussed on a very specific end-result (and not something like “We’re not happy about how the semi-final game venues were decided” – ffs, I’m not happy about a lot fekin more important things than that – don’t aim so low !!!).

    – it must be vocally backed by the supporters clubs / CSA

    – the club must decline to distribute allocations for away games

Other than (at least) the first two points (third point might never happen), calls for a Boycott, like those on this website, are doomed to fail.

If we are going to go – we need to go all-in. And when I say ‘we’ I don’t mean the contributers here – it needs the CSA / Celtic Trust / independent supporters clubs, etc. to speak to each other and organise.

Wee BGFC will not be happy, but if we get organised, if a Boycott can be effectively arranged via the CST and CSA ( and the club, please??!!??) – then there is a chance we can force change. I’d be up for that – anything else is pissing in the wind.

  18. Sorry if already posted

Steve Bruce has been sacked as Aston Villa manager after one win in their last 10 games.

A 3-3 draw at home to Preston on Tuesday – in which a cabbage was thrown in the direction of Bruce – has left Villa with 15 points from 11 Sky Bet Championship games and 12th in the table.

  19. As only about a dozen posters responded to the A or B Boycott question,I would have to assume that The Club`s Statement is about as much as we are likely to see re protest over this issue.

As Corkcelt said yesterday, only a united protest representing a large percentage of our support is likely to create a groundswell of pinion that could evolve into meaningful action.

Perhaps Hamilton Tim, as a very involved supporter, could tell us the likelihood of this happening.

    Meanwhile, emails to :

    jptaylor@celticfc.co.uk

    might have some effect.

Each to their own, of course, but I would recommend at least some positivity in relation to the Club Statement.

  20. Three posters in seven minutes voicing similar opinions re boycott/other action ( as opposed to`pinion`). Maybe there is a chance of effective protest.

I don’t like my posts being taken out of context for a cheap dig , please refrain from doing so in future.

There should be a question mark at the end of your post, tut tut , you must try harder.

  22. WITS

I doubt you are but you might be the only one who thinks being treated unfairly, being discriminated against and not being treated equally constitutes a storm in a teacup.

    JJ

  23. A supporters boycott will only hurt Celtic, no one else. We need to sell our full allocation and have Murrayfield rocking. Give the Green Brigade their own section at the stadium and let them come up with the suitable banners to highlight corrupt Scottish football.

The boycott should be targeted at the main sponsors (Betfred) and the press/media (particularly BT who are covering the game). No one from Celtic for pre match events, no pre match press conferences and no pre or post match interviews. The directors should show that they are serious by not taking up their seats nonorganic participate in the pre/post match niceties in the equivalent of the Murrayfield board room.

And if we reach the final, repeat.

Piss off the source of the money, don’t affect the team.

  24. Dbhoy

I took the part of your post that piqued my interest.

Baffled by your reply…but maybe not

Ok I think the Hampden Murrayfield issue is a storm in a teacup. Get on with it and play the game.

I dont think being treated unfairly and discriminated against is a storm in a teacup.

The intention of the SFA may very well be to mess Celtic about but that needn’t be the effect

  26. This is an away game, in the sense its a different stadium, for Hearts. We dont feel Hampden is a home game do we? No. I firmly believe we’ll win too. So i’m not that bothered.

What bothers me is the way it was done. When they decided to use Murrayfield and selected the kick off times. they should have had another draw to see which semi-final played where. Dead easy.Unless of course you had a different agenda.

  27. WITS

Taken in isolation,I agree that whether the game is played Hampden or Murrayield is insignificant.

    JJ

  28. Seems simple enough to me what happens next. Lawwell either steps down from SPFL Board whilst kicking and screaming, or stays and forces change, or does nothing. The latter would prove the Statement was a sop and would make him look weak and foolish in my opinion.

  29. What is the mechanism for ensuring that Res 12 is voted on at the forthcoming AGM? Is there time to ensure it is on the Agenda? HH

  30. DILLIGAFBHOY on 4TH OCTOBER 2018 9:21 AM
