Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

430

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

Hbp definitely – been on the tablets for years :-)

Just need something for the paranoia now…..

What’s that you say Doc, I’m not paranoid enough!

“Equity”. We are in Lewis Carroll territory here. Celtic did nothing to force the SPFL to readdress the two match solution. Others did, including the managers of Hearts and Aberdeen. After the SPFL buckled our Board asked to be in the ballot.

    “What ballot?” asked the SPFL.

But it won’t change the fixtures or cause another re think.

It leaves the Celtic support where it always is, this time with the agreement of the club.

There will be a better chance of Celtic following this up if as many as possible contact :

    jptaylor@celticfc.co.uk,

and let the Club know our feelings.

Incidentally, I agree with Corkcelt that ALL the Celtic organisations and Blogs should form a united front, decide on action and act as one.

  5. Tottenham need to put Victor up for a corner and sign an eighteen year old from Airdrie and bring on Miku.

Do not agree nor disagree with posters on here, just think some are overly fuming about their opinions.

Re: like for like? I agree that there may be some distinctions, but I see them as distinctions withtout a difference. But, I am always open to being convinced by a good argument (or a bribe) …. interested in hearing why you think this situation is different.

Tend to agree, we should have objected as soon as the original draw was made, it appears our statement

confers that we were TOO LATE to complain.

  10. DIKTAT

A diktat is a statute, harsh penalty or settlement imposed upon a defeated party by the victor, or a dogmatic decree. The term has acquired a pejorative sense, to describe a set of rules dictated by a foreign power or an unpopular local power. The phrases “To impose its values” or “give orders” can be synonymous with giving a diktat.

So, is that us admitting defeat then?

  11. EMERALDBEE-cheers mate, didn’t know but something made me think it wouldn’t be against the huns ?

  12. Having read the statement, it appears to me the ‘Celtic’ are seriously pissed off.

I’d like to think that a line has been crossed with this decision, and ‘someone’ has said ‘enough is enough’ . What The Club does next, or given past history, doesn’t do next, is huge, and critical to how the fans react. Pivotal moment for the Club, and the current board, I’d suggest.

A few dozen internet bampots myself included, shouting the odds will not achieve anything.

The Association of Celtic Supporter’s Clubs, The Celtic Trust, The Green Brigade etc need to get together and form a United Front, there has to be a Central Committee that commands widespread support from the Celtic Faithful.

Without that we are pissing against the wind.

    P.S.

I thought the Club Statement was good & most welcome but it’s up to the main Supporter’s Organisations now.

Getting angry & irrational does not help, revenge is a dish best served cold.

  14. Message to my club over the cup fixture rearrangement.

Corruption has been rife since 2012 and Neil Doncaster has been at the heart of it.

You sat and delayed speaking out for years and now you finally grow a set over a cup game being rearranged.

Away and geez peace ya clowns.

You should’ve grown a set long ago but you chose not to.

My first thought reading that statement was watershed moment. Hope so

Hope you and yours are well.

The board have their hands tied at the moment, do they advise supporters to boycott to the detriment of our team on the park, heading to rub more salt in the hun wounds by winning.

  17. Dave King bought the Charlotte Fakes material and he knows Neil Doncaster and Stewart Regans dirty little secrets never ever forget that.

The SPFL/SFA will always be in his debt.

  18. Celtic Book Club Corner advice.

Best Lisbon 1967 book for a bright 12-year old lad?

My favourite is Season in the Sun, from about 25 years ago, but it;s a long time since I fitted the described demographic so all help appreciated

  19. The Statement is a good start, if it is a start. If that’s it, then not good enough. When the biggest Club in the land states formally that the SPFL, the body which governs the League and the League cup, is discriminating against them, further action MUST follow. Doncaster is a dead man walking, surely.

The only statement they will hear is No Tims in Murrayfield. Make it happen.

    Bhoycott Murrayfield!

  21. If you get a chance, take a peek at Ivan Rakitic’s technique in superbly shooting Barca into a 2-0 lead. The ball comes to him high, about 30 yards out. He leaps high, and adjusts his body to lean to his left while volleying with his right an Exocet off the post and in. Loris never moved.

    Almost McGinnesque in fact.

    IniquitousIV

  22. Mike,

As far as I know, the events of the past six years have been made a lot more complicated than they would have been had simple truth been in play. As a result, other bodies have become involved and that has led to transparency becoming a victim. Many of Auldheid`s posts have referred to matters which, for legal reasons, could not be revealed.

The current fixture fiasco does not have any of those complications so Celtic were able to respond instantly. This, ironically, could be used support the argument that Celtic are not free to be as open as they might wish on the whole Sevco affair.

I accept, of course, that Celtic have not issued Statements on the more serious matter of Sevco and all who sail in her for possibily less acceptable reasons than I have posited , but that, for me, remains conjecture. The current situation is unambiguous.

As I don`t have the information to hand to support my view, maybe it will have to be the bribe ;-)

    Cheerio for now.
