Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

430

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

Brendan was asked about it after the fact. “Render to Caesar that which is Caesar’s” forgetting that, Caesar is one of us.

Even the Scottish Police Federation arrived before Celtic. That tells you all you need to know.

  2. There can’t be one poster on here tonight that can’t see we are getting shafted again ,from a great height.

  5. Agree with an excellent statement , but what happens next? For what it’s worth this Is my tuppenceworth ….

Celtic call for a vote of no confidence in the SFL committee or whoever made this decision.

We would then know who is for a fair and equal competition….

Those who do not support us can then live with the consequences and start planning on financing their clubs without our away supports money….. We, our support need to play our part and wise up and realise that we are funding this ClusterF@&@…..

  6. If you’re waiting for what comes next you better have more patience than Auldheid…

    The Statement. That’s all Folks…

I really wish the Club would stop greetin’ and go and punch the bullies instead…

    Then

    Punch them again

    And

    Again

I think Mrs Bateen Bhoy got fed up of coming home from work to find me watching more Celtic Porn And anooying the neighbours with too much raucous, loud music ?

Loking forward to being in toon on 10th November and catching up with the good guys again.

Hope everything is good in your world too. ?

  8. CELTIC MAC

Every club in the League Cup now happy, except Celtic.

This is a mere detail, compared to what has happened unchallenged since 2012.

BR is fairness was asked by SMSM on the hop, but the Celtic complaint should have been earlier than after

    the alleged rethink IMHO.

  9. What is it with Celtic Supporters, previous talk about Hampden not fit for purpose,a dump, supporters calling for boycotts, give the SFA f all, then we are told to play at Murrayfied, they don’t want to play their, you couldn’t make it up,stop your whimpering,if you can get to Edinburgh fine,if not watch it on the telly, and all that matters that we play in another cup final.

  10. Tottenham need to put Victor up for a corner and sign an eighteen year old from Airdrie and bring on Miku and Barcelona need Efe Ambrose to hold their defence together.

  11. Delaneys Dunky on

100% correct sir. The only way to deal with bullies wi a masonic hue is to pummel them hard then harder.

I recall Celtic called for a review of FtSFA.

    Not one club backed us

Several telling our club it was time to move on

A view our chairman Bankier agrees with

What makes you think calling out FtSPFL would be any different ?

We are way beyond that point

Time for both the Club and fans to take affirmative action.

  13. Jist,…….

    Jist empty the park.

The establishment goat yer numbers when yeez swallied the LNS whitewash, then when yeez took the NFL being flung under the ‘shame game’ bus by the PLC on the chin, then when yeez looked the ither wye when £49 Sevco came into the same league as Celtic FC, passing themselves off as £49 Rangers FC, yeez bought the tickets and swallied the same club lie, rubber stamping Sevco FC as the same club as Rangers FC, and yeez have, through your hunlike smugness, let the huns aff wi £140 million and 25+ mibbery trophies that they stole during the Murray ebt years.

So, who are the “real” gullibilly’s ?

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  14. As someone who lives within walking distance of Hampden, I’m happy to be going to Murrayfield for a semi final from a football perspective. I hate Hampden, always have, and the novelty value of watching us beat the diets at Murrayfield appeals, even taking into account the traffic/parking problems I wouldn’t have had the game been at Hampden.

However, how the decision was reached (we don’t know the rationale behind the decision but we can guess) was wrong. There should have been a toss of the coin or drawing of ballots to see which game was played at which stadium. As for Celtic’s statement, a sop so they can tick the ‘we are as unhappy as our supporters’ box before moving on and doing nothing.

If you allow corruption and cheating to go unchecked and unpunished you shouldn’t be surprised when the corrupt ones return to shaft you again, and again, and again……

    Bend over………….

  15. Norrie Agree it is way past time for meaningful action….

The Clubs Action … a no confidence vote on this issue would identify those who are for or against fairness.

The Fans Action …a boycott of those who identify they are against Fairness….

It may not be the ideal but at least it is feasible…..

  16. The huns will be laughing up their sleeves at us.

I’ll go into work and be met by the… I told you we will be back.

I suppose they are right with the goings on for semi finals games.

Yep, they will have a semi when they gloat at us.

  18. love the big tough guy statement from celtic.

that will teach the SFA to mess with us.

why not just play the sevco game at ibrox and the hearts game at tynecastle.

why not just let sevco run scottish football.

  19. prestonpans bhoys on

Will be interesting how they segregate Murrayfield. Guess whoever gets the south/east has exclusive use of the tram or will they let us share the route?

  20. The Celtic Football Club Stands Alone – Righteous and Principled.

    F Them All.

    HH. ?

  21. The only reason I can see that Celtic are playing at Murrayfield is the cops and SPFL know the chances of there being trouble were high if Sevco were playing in the capital.

So cos they’re thugs and we’re not, we have to go to Edinburgh….but the cops and SPFL won’t admit it in a million years.

Surely they have to give a rational explanation.

Anyway I think we are going to give our best ever away performance in Europe tomorrow night and we’ll get a memorable win.

    DD

Well I have been in the Tynie end before all on my own and hands in my pockets?

  23. Murrayfield holds 67,000, deduct sponsors and segregation, the allocation will be circa 30k each. There will be 30k Tims there i am sure. A boycott wont be considered and wont happen. It is upto the Celtic Board to earn their money and deal with the discriminatory and irrational SPFL, and SFA for that matter. The supporters want to attend Semi Finals and the team and Manager deserve to be supported.

  24. Only strong part of the statement for me,was calling Dungcaster a liar re BT and Police Scotland having input into the original decision. We should have pushed for proof at the time, but typically sat back and said fk all, leadership zero yet again.

  26. Hearts forward Steven Naismith commented on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound: “As a player, changes don’t really affect us.

“I think I said at the time commonsense should prevail. If somebody’s made a mistake, just rectify it and move on. It seems to be what’s happened and it kind of suits everybody, I think.

“Let’s just play the games now.
