Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

    It’s a A for Boycott.

    And a B for Attending.

For the record, I was never going anyway. I go to Celtic Park and no other venues in Scotland.

Funny enough I have been thinking the same thing for ages. Why else would you allow the team to be cheated on the park repeatedly (and in the Compliance officer’s office) , the supporters shafted and regularly vilified in the MSM and the shareholders defrauded – all by the governing bodies, the same governing bodies who you can prove are corrupt, biased, and potentially criminal. UNLESS of course you were frightened of what might come out of your closet should you present the evidence that the establishment desperately want buried. if that is the case then there are an even more dishonourable gang of cowards running our club than I ever thought possible. It is something that I want to believe could not possibly be true but the longer they do and say nothing whilst in possession of the evidence, it becomes more of a dawning reality that it might be. As my old mum used to say, tell the truth and shame the devil – over to you Celtic PLC

  6. FOLLOWING today’s SPFL Board meeting, at which it was decided that Celtic’s Betfred League Cup semi-final against Hearts will now take place at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Sunday, October 28, with the other semi-final between Rangers and Aberdeen being held at Hampden later the same day, Celtic Football Club has released the following statement.

The SPFL Board’s decision not to hold a ballot to decide the venues of the forthcoming semi-final matches is both irrational and discriminatory.

Celtic recognised there was a genuinely difficult problem to resolve. All we asked for was equity of treatment – in other words, a simple ballot of which game went to which venue, so that all clubs would have a 50-50 chance of playing at Hampden.

We understand that those bodies consulted, including the police and broadcasters, had no preference whatsoever on which match should take place at each venue and, therefore, there was only one appropriate method of reaching a fair outcome.

The SPFL Board have been unable to produce logic or reason for turning down our modest request. Instead, they have arbitrarily decided that a chosen game should stay at Hampden and the other should go to Murrayfield.

The interests of our club and supporters have been subordinated to a diktat from the SPFL board which is as unfair as it was unnecessary.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell was excused from the SPFL board meeting due to the subject under discussion.

I am of the opinion that Brendan was appointed on the say so of Dermot Desmond, I also believe Peter Lawwell has never wanted him at the club, reason being, imo, a whole lot of his control was depleted in one fell swoop, now that is open to argument but it’s what I believe, I see what I see and I formulate my opinions on what I see and read, there is enough past evidence of our Peter, imo, failing managers, again imo, it looks from the outside and reading between the lines that it has happened again, why else would Brendan go public.

    Just my opinion

  14. RightCeltic the statement is a start.

But what are you going to do about this scandalous decision, we need action as well as statements

Come on Celtic our tie was first out hat

    D. :)

  15. If there’s a call for a Bhoycott by the various supporters groups then I’m in as long as I don’t have to drive the supporters bus ? if they wish to go!

If no Bhoycott and people have booked hotels for Glasgow, then the SPFL should put FREE buses on for travelling through to Edinburgh.

Would prefer if he sold John McGinn to Celtic.

    YNWA

    —————————————————————————————

I was firmly of that opinion, and was disappointed when he chose AV.

After being approached by BR several times he should have had it clear in his mind as to future direction, forget the weasel words about First team choices.

Had he wanted to come to Celtic he could have sat tight ,however a combination of money and poor admin by PL contributed to McGinn doing a Mo Johnson on us.

I believe he contributed significantly to the current uneasy environment by his actions, so for that I do not wish him well.

  18. I like the statement.

No need to go overboard to make a point.

For me there are two pointed and well made phrases in this, “irrational and discriminatory”

    And “equity of treatment”.

Celtic just stated to the SPFL you discriminate against us and don’t treat us fairly.

About time, we could issue similar on a weekly basis and be accurate.

  19. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Well we know the goalposts moved when the Strong Rangers Association stepped in. What we don’t know (and will never be told) is what – if any – conditions they stipulated for allowing one of the games to be moved.

I didn’t think my opinion of Doncaster could get any lower but he has done the impossible here.

“in terms of other options, there just aren’t any”

    Hmmmm……

Was the original plan not supposed to be one that suited everyone? Why change it if this really was the case?

Apropos absolutely nothing, wasn’t George Peat in the media recently talking about something or other?

  20. Semi final fixtures issued right in the middle of our preparation for a Europa tie. I think they are trying to piss us all off . Ha! This is going to be the sweetest treble ever.

  21. Sid- thanks for reply, why do we always lie back and take it? That statement reminds me of the old Dennis Healey line..’ like getting flogged by a dead sheep….’ weak and toothless as usual.
