Lisbon Lions Legacy

225

Raising money for the needy is the first part of our heritage as Celtic supporters. Once that job is done, you need to ensure it goes to worthy projects. This year is likely to see a new high water mark for your Foundation. As well as the usual badge day, bucket collection, Christmas Appeal and other projects throughout the year, we had the events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions European Cup win.

Celebrations at The Hydro and the Grosvenor Hotel in London not only marked the anniversary in some style, they allowed the Foundation to be more ambitious with their projects.

You and I have discussed many times how seemingly innocuous contemporary events would not take place without that achievement in Lisbon, but it never occurred to me that the work done because of the Lions should bear their name in legacy.

Today, Celtic FC Foundation announced £2m would be paid to Dementia Care for projects run by Alzheimer Scotland: ‘Lions Lunch Breaks’ and ‘Dementia Befrienders’.

Research continues into the effects of heading a football on dementia. The illness has struck the Lions directly; Billy McNeill’s family recently let it be known he has suffered for several years. It is a distressing condition for both suffers and their loved ones. These projects will make daily life more enjoyable for both.

Well done to everyone who put their hand in their pocket this year.

  3. norman bates csc,

My mum was not and will not be deaded/

My mum was sold out of a terminal illness from my old mum to the new mum prior to the old mum being deaded

If her spirit had remained in the Old mom throughout the deided process, then we would have went down the your mum is deid route and would have lost our history.

We retained a continuous emotional attachment to our mum, and therefore are correct in saying that our step mum , actually has the history of our mum .

  4. The club was not and will not be liquidated.

The club was sold out of administration, from the oldco to the newco prior to the oldco being liquidated.

If the club had remained in the OldCo throughout the liquidation process, then we would have went down the airdionians route and would have lost our history.

We retained a continuous economic entity, and therefore are correct in saying the business continued with the history intact.”

    these documentary’s are brilliant.

  6. Huge congratulations to the Celtic Trust and the Disabled Celtic Supporters Association for managing to get their joint Resolution passed at today’s AGM.

Please God this will result in improvement in the facilities for those Celtic supporters who suffer from disabilities.

That story of polis corruption is too far fetched to make the cut for Scot Squad. Truth funnier than fiction.

Good to see Celtic FC and CQN Highlight to connection of thees Neurological Diseases.. to Football

But lets be clear its Not just Dementia..

Just over a Year ago my best mate here in Oz ..Father Died of MND..He signed for Celtic at the same time as Jinky and John Cushley..l asked a couple of people if they would highlight this in a Article but they didn’t think they could do such a important subject justice..

Its something i’ve always read about since Jinky Died..l think at the time l had never know or been connected to someone having MND..

Maybe older CQNers would know better than me..They wait of the Ball in the 60’s obviously a lot heavier especially soaking wet and Maybe training practices were a lot harder on Players..

l read in a recent Shankly article before he went to Liverpool training was 2 hours running round the Park then you got the ball for a kick about last 20 mins..

Ian St John who was a pal of my Dad when l was Young has been asking the FA to look into the connection for about 10 Years..Think there now is something like 7-8 of Shankly’s squad diagnosed with a Neurological Disease..

Billy McNeil use to attend the Church 30 meters from my Mums front Window..when mass You would see Big Billy..He literally is a Giant of a Man chatting to people as they came out..Tragic to see a Illness that is slow but deadly take over him..

Couple of Articles out today on BBC Site.. ‘Price of Football’….Indeed

Apologies if you already knew this…but John Lennons song is superb. imo.

  14. Right, I am now starting my own Petition to get myself a seat next to Brendan in the Celtic dug out ( Home and Away)…..just so I can keep Brendan right about a few football issues in relation to ” who to pick and feckin tactics” for each and every Celtic game.

Methinks there is more chance of Newco winning The Champions League…but hey the world loves a trier…and I can be very trying !

    HH

  15. BMCUWP,

I know that I lost that flippin key in McCuills on Saturday.

I conducted a wee “search party” on my own in McCuills on Sunday …..without success.

It was when I went into the Empire Bar on Saturday night that I realised I had lost it, but there was no way I could back to McCuills right then as I would have needed to ask folk to move away from the Bar etc. Thats why I waited until Sunday at 12.30pm…and spoke to Nicky the owner.

Any excuse for more drink and another wee mini Pub crawl on my own.

  16. Good morning CQN from a dull and still mild East Devon.

Scuttlebutt:- US Navy/ USMC terminology for rumour, gossip etc.

  17. Good morning friends.

Yogi Hughes from page 4, petition signed with the following comment “All we are seeking is the truth and only then should we consider ‘moving on’. The current coals definitely need to be raked over. And until then, no SFA cup competitions for me. EKFC will need to beat Albion Rovers this Saturday without my support!”

    2 more sleeps ;-)

  18. Did Brendan have another Scottish team in mind when he said this:

“The beauty of Celtic is that we are trying to create and rely on ourselves and no-one else.

“When you are like that you will have sustainable success and that is important.” ?

    JJ

  19. 1558 have now signed the petition linked on Page 4. Another 132 would take us to an interesting number.

    JJ

  20. Scott Brown`s importance to Celtic cannot be overstated. Neymar is presumably more talented but if we swopped Brown for him, we would be a lesser team. `Team` being the operative word.

    JJ

  21. Jobo @7:31

A fine comment and the EK reference makes it all the more significant. Well done you sly old fox :-)

Don’t know about a lesser team, But I’d bite your hand off to swap them on Wednesday and I’m a big fan of Broony.

  23. A pleasant 18 and sunny @ 10 am -way down south .

    La Bella Italia —

Ventura sacked and heading off into the sunset with @ 750 k euros in his pocket — one wag on the radio said — ” if there’s any justice in this world he’ll leave it on a train “.

Much media hype that Carlo Ancelotti has said a conditional Yes to being the next Manager — rumored conditions range from wanting Maldini as his assistant to only taking the job if the dinosaurs at the Italian FA leave the scene of their crime .

Strong drip drip in the media re the shambles that was the Italian National squad — players telling the Manager to -**** ***, players briefing the media re the absurdity of life with Ventura , players requesting that Ventura be removed ASAP and the dinosaurs giving that a deaf ear.. Add in tales of serious arguments in the dressing room , cliques and team talks where the players openly mocked Ventura and you have a picture of a fabulous mess .

Some tidying up to do today — Paris tomorrow with Mrs S of T . . Game on Wednesday !!!

Today’s choon –. A gem from 68 . . Took it with me when I left home to go to Uni -. it didn’t go down well with the hippies .-
