Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

Respect for your balanced perspective re the GB situ etc.

A serious question. What course of action would you advise PL to take given it seems no other clubs are not looking likely to back any reopening of the case re titles etc ?

    JF,

Naw what we have here is you trying to dictate what we should focus on.

The Plc told the world in a narrative directed at the Green Brigade that Celtic supporters blocked passageways that created a safety hazard putting supporters lives at risk.

A false accusation and one that is directed at implying the GB were/are not only responsible for the fine associated with that infringement of the rules but also for putting other supporters lives in danger.

When in fact it was the plcs security forces who blocked the passageways and put supporters lives in danger as they do at every UEFA game, a UEFA charge that is levelled at the club more frequent than any banners, songs or political protests.

So if your going to sell your soul to the Plc then make sure when you try to take control of the narrative at least try and retain some elements of the truth.

B78- ta for reply, Celtic should say to the SFA/SPL/SPFL, just apply the rules that are in the constitution. We are only looking for fairness and a level playing field, no more no less. And after the highest Court in the land has made a judgement, why would the rules that are in place, not be applied?

  5. Surprising no one else is interested in their safety in a stadium with a fire risk ?

    Burnley78

Wonder what would happen if Celtic threatened to resign from the league and cup competitions ?

Or refuse to take tickets for any away games or cup games – even work to the 5% ticket allocation rule ?

  6. IF the club wanted to, they could bring scottish football to it’s knees, they could force change, they won’t but they could.

Hold a presser and tell the world that we have had enough, the game needs cleansed, the only ones who can do this it Celtic, we are scottish football.

I keep going back to the time that Dr John told them no more, ” Those days are gone” he even mentioned the dossier that the club had, we had them by the balls and someone told him to back off, why, for what reason,

Pedro could destroy them if he wanted, if he decides not to, the only club who will suffer in the long run will be Celtic, to deny that will be tantamount to committing suicide.

    IMO that is.

  7. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    So JF,

Leaping from 80’to 900 is not exaggerating a problem, let me explain, today in Cambodia the news that Celtic were being forced to close down a section for the next game was related to me, do you honestly think that self inflicted bad publicity would have got half the coverage if the Plc banned 80 supporters. Obviously the finer points of PR and bad publicity are lost on you.

  8. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION:

No, what we have here isn’t me trying to do anything. You asked me a question about whether or not people are distracted by this; I see no evidence at all of that. Those of us who were focussed on it still are.

I haven’t sold my soul to anyone, and that you would make such a pathetic argument shows how shallow your actual argument is. The PLC board? Cant stand our chairman, who made vicious accusations against the Celtic fans to the extent I won’t set foot in Celtic Park until he’s no longer there. Lawwell? My grievance with him goes back way further than that.

I’m one of the few Celtic bloggers who DOESN’T get invited for tea and biscuits around the boardroom table and I wouldn’t even contemplate accepting such an invitation if it were extended.

No-one gets to question me on my stand where they are concerned. The idea I am some lackey for them is ridiculous and offensive.

You and I both know we’re not getting the full picture, but guess what? There are TWO sides fighting a desperate PR offensive here, not just one, so I take what both say with a large pinch of salt.

But what is unequivocal is that the Green Brigade has said, in plain speaking, that they will not change one aspect of their behaviour; they have said they will not respect Celtic, UEFA, the local authorities, the safety organisations, the police or anyone else for that matter.

That’s the simple inescapable fact; they are not willing to toe the line.

And that leave the club with no choice.

The blocking issue I’ve already done my best to explain; a lot of fans who do not belong in that area attempt to congregate in that area, and this is every game this happens … and that on its own would be a violation of the safety certificate and Celtic have been trying to deal with that for ages.

If that explanation sounds too trite and simple well maybe it’s because it is simple.

    This is not a conspiracy.

You say the club is lying. Others say the GB are. I am not going to call anyone a liar. There is blame on both sides. There are misunderstandings on both sides.

But that statement today is unequivocal. It cannot be spun and the GB would not thank anyone for trying. It needs no decoding. It is plain enough and it sets out a position the club cannot and will not accept. if they were seeking martyrdom they guaranteed it today.

And if they called our bluff? The league survived without the huns and would survive without us. And no we aren’t the people sorry Scottish football ;o)

We should’ve quit the league years ago and joined the English conference but that needs planning not knee jerk reactions.

  10. THE_HUDDLE:

Called our bluff? They’d bite our hands off, just to get rid of us. And with nowhere to go we’d be as well shutting the doors. It’s a ridiculous bluff; it’s Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles threatening to blow his own head off.

  16. I’m sure that’s a reference to me, so I’ll answer it.

The SFA wouldn’t be “getting rid of us” at all. In this scenario we’d have walked away.

And you know what UEFA’s stance on that would be?

Having left your home you now have no home. And guess what? No-one else will take you. Because we won’t let them.

    The idea is a non-starter.

I honestly seen the fire brigade out the front of our stadium at least a dozen times last season, at the end of games

  19. Bada Bing.

The challenge is that unless there is a mandate or an interest in dealing with it at SPFL and SFA level then all that will be achieved is wasting breath. Maybe that is what the club should do though.

Our card is marked with uefa already but my sense is seeking an independent review of scottish football governance via uefa following result of a publicly secured judicial review might be the only way of securing a result.

i get that shouting our intent from the rooftops might appease supporters but I am not sure it achieves much at the minute. I believe celtic were expecting greater engagement from other clubs. That is very disappointing in my view. Aberdeen Hearts and Hibs especially weak. They all have their private agendas.

Now we are clear no others are coming forward I think we are moving into new territory. Personally I hope some well heeled fans are preparing a case for a review as I am struggling to see any other way of forcing the SFA or SpFL hand. I do think a review has a good chance it could succeed from what I hear.

I do know from personal experience for at least 10 years Celtic has tried hard to ensure proper governance and the right people were involved in running our game. Despite our supremacy on and off the park this has not been as easy as we would all think.

Don’t rock the boat, don’t offend people, don’t stick your neck out.

Think the time before that when our toilets were smashed off-duty Policeman were involved.

Could you tell me, after all that Celtic are up against – why you think this is easy to do?

What scenario, for holding a presser and telling the world that we have had enough and our game needs cleansed, feck me you fair jump to conclusions.

I may not be the brightest button in the box James, but neither am I stupid, I have survived fine for over 60 years mainly on my wits and knowing when to speak and when not to, I survived situations I shouldn’t have due to having an insight into things. just like I have been right about this situ from the onset, I have never wavered from my stance that the cabal will prevail.

I remember on here a few years ago I told you that things would get political and the government would get involved, you mocked me for suggesting that, you told me in no uncertain terms that politicos would never get involved, I wonder how that one worked out then.

We could buy one of the financially struggling English clubs – and spend the next 12 months setting up the business to relocate to Glasgow

Sure legally we could win this as Welsh team participate in the English league set up

English football is moving to a franchise set up anyway
