Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

    Natknow,

This is obviously a bit of a trapeze for you, I’ll try and dumb it down so you might understand a wee bit about what is being discussed.

My shares became less valuable because the people responsible to protect their value failed in that responsibility. That is in the past and it is that failure they are answerable for. What comes in the future I will decide when I am finished dealing with my existing grievance.

Now whether I decide that sell the shares and reinvest in a plc with better moral and ethical values is not advice I need from someone who should be lighting flares.

  2. I also don’t understand writing an article which is relevant to Celtic’s statement but doesn’t address the banners on Wednesday night. It really does look like a squirrel Paul.

The banners on Wednesday have been addressed by both PL and our manager Brendan Rogers, and that’s it, they give it no more oxygen simple as that, but keep the deflections and whatabouterie coming, they make fun reading:))

  3. Never had any time for any Board. If my auld Da had got his hands on the Kellys and Whites,he would have been banged up.I was brought up with this distrust, and it never left me.

As far as I could see,the Hearts “Flares”were not flares at all. They emanated Green smoke. Are they dangerous/.i have no idea, but I have never heard of anyone injured.Maybe just luck.I dont know, but I do know the hysterical types like to exaggerate the dangers, especially the H and S brigade.Italian league games are rife every game with same devices.I have never heard of any grounds being closed, fans banned.Having attended a few Napoli games, the GB are choirboys.

If our Board want to start the hard line tactics, then OK,but please lets see them do it where it really means something.Adopt them with the SFA,SPFL,and especially UEFA,where their simple roll over and acceptance of the ludicrous LG fines was quite frankly embarrassing.

Wonder if other club’s supporters fragment and fight like this ? Probably.

  15. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: “It’s really disappointing that we are talking about stadium safety and paramilitary banners rather than our progress into the next round of Europe.

“The fans have a responsibility to behave in the stadium and I would urge everyone involved to see the damage this is causing to the club. Hopefully this is a wake-up call.

“The players thrive on the cauldron that the fans create at Celtic Park but there are clearly boundaries that you can’t step over. Everyone knows that pyrotechnics, unacceptable banners and ignoring stewards who are enforcing basic stadium safety measures are simply not on. I really hope that the fans take this on board. It would be a real shame if they forced the club to take more permanent action to ensure safety and protect the Club’s standing in European football, which is what we should all be aiming to promote.”

    =========================================================================

Brendan Rodgers said he hopes the move is a “wake-up call” for the fans involved.

The Parkhead boss said: “It’s really disappointing that we are talking about stadium safety and paramilitary banners rather than our progress into the next round of Europe.

“The fans have a responsibility to behave in the stadium and I would urge everyone involved to see the damage this is causing to the club. The club say large numbers of flares were smuggled in and set off under banners within the Green Brigade section of the ground in the match against Hearts in May. Then the club were hit with the UEFA charge for the “illicit banners” and blocking stairwells at the match against Linfield on Wednesday.

A statement released this afternoon said: “The club has been working with the Safety Advisory Group towards a solution for this season, but the events at the match on Wednesday night, where there were further serious safety issues within the Green Brigade section, require the club to take immediate action to comply with its responsibilities under the applicable legislation.”

Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said Celtic have been left with no choice but to close the section.

Lawwell said: “The behaviour of fans in the Green Brigade section of the ground at the matches against Hearts and Linfield was a serious safety risk, which has left us with no choice but to take decisive action to ensure safety within the stadium.

“There is no room for debate. The safety authorities and the football authorities make the rules. They also enforce the rules. If the rules are broken, Celtic will be punished again and again. There is no hiding place from these realities. Anyone who has Celtic’s interests at heart must surely recognise them and behave accordingly.”

Many of our problems are historical,as is much of what makes us Celtic fans.

A distrust of our board, second only to that of the authorities,is in our DNA.

Overcoming adversity to triumph, count that one in too.

Arguing amongst ourselves about minutiae-while still largely agreeing about the big picture-aye,that too.

Who says humanity evolves when in 2017 we are still having the same stupid arguments our forebears did a century ago,and probably for centuries previous before football came along?

In the meantime, there has been the introduction of rules laws regulations. Sadly the only way to fight them is to have them changed when they are clearly wrong.

Not to simply flout them, ignore them,at the expense of those you purport to represent.

Lessons of history,I suppose. Many people in the same situation have followed that road.

Of course, the Civil Rights movement in the US,or the independence movement in India and Ireland, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, they all had figureheads they could follow and believe in.

We’ve got the GB or The Board.

What a bloody joke that is,caught in a fight between two bald men over a comb.

  23. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    BT,

I provided links to the relevant and current legal mandatory requirements that did support my theory, there is a requirement and the fact is that referees are legally responsible health and safety officers during a game, any injuries are reportable to the HSE by both the refs, ,s,f,a and the players employers. That none of these take their responsibilities seriously is just another display of disregard for the rules that apply to everyone else outside the game.

However here’s a wee trick anyone in the health and safety business can try out.

Being a professional H&S they are legally obliged to report incidents and near misses as well as people who are displaying a disregard for the safety and health of those they are responsible to be protecting. So it would only take a couple of our own HSE qualified supporter to make an official report about an injury or questioning the ability/qualifications of a party responsible to ensure H&S is being properly applied. Such a report would need to be investigated by the HSE.

  24. On the “Smoke devices”.I knew it would not take long for the “Asthma “sufferer to come on.If I had Asthma,I would be nowhere near the GB.To say the smoke carries to other parts of the stadium is nonsense.

My brother has suffered from Asthma since school.I have never,in around 35 years se him having any difficulties standing with me in pubs, terracings,in fact anywhere that was reeking with smoke. Before the ban.

  26. In the recent Podcast, Paul John reads out an e-mail from a board member of an SPL club, whose club suffered administration, this e-mail states that this writer had seen evidence that Scottish football has been brought into disrepute, yet nobody comments, clubs say nothing and we now have our own club closing a part of its stadium when worse much worse has happened when RFC [IL] Sevco Aberdeen and Ajax have come calling, never mind the attacks on our players at Tynecastle Ibrox and on social media recently

These decision and inconsistent and the club is adopting a couldn’t care less attitude to its responsibilities towards its own.

  27. Celtic statements are like buses ,tickets sold out at 12.00 banned by 5.00 an unmitigated public relations disaster and Celtic with the help of Celtic supporters IMHO put another dent in Supreme Court.

Every day there is only one Scottish football story to wake up to, and it was reaffirmed and set in stone when the supreme court announced its decision, every statement for those who uphold justice or want to protest should be made on the theft that Scotland wants left dead, but unburied.

Degrees of empathy for TGB go from one to ten amongst the entirety of the Celtic support, we shouldn’t need to post about colour and atmosphere or how good they are, and only seem to when they have transgressed?

TGB and Celtic have engaged probably more than any other “Ultra” group in the Europe and they have even essentially been given a section of the ground. The ban will be served the ground will again be full, and the caravan will move on.

The Linfield tie was a missed opportunity for banner makers who should have red carded ongoing racism. Celtic having to play Sevco is another open goal in more ways than one, for statement time, but now even after decades of annual bonfires during piece time in Ireland, a tiny organized minority of the Celtic support needs guidance to refocus on todays wars.

Its time the ‘board’ ‘PLC’ did likewise .

    Good luck with that.

  33. HAVANALAUGH on 22ND JULY 2017 10:57 AM

The only thing that can derail us right now is a civil war amongst the support. The GB and a majority / sizeable minority of fans on one side; The board, the manager and a majority / sizeable minority of fans on the other.

That is a war the GB cannot win, but it would be a damaging victory for the other side(though pyrrhic would be overstating it).

I was slaughtered on here for stating my fear that the day was coming when the manager would have to speak out against the support. That day has come and it is sad indeed. I’ve seen a few rumours that Rodgers was fuming with that banner. I can’t substantiate that. What I do know, is that he went out of his way to build bridges when we played Linfield, he spoke at length about ‘a new Northern Ireland’. He knows people there are trying to move on. He knows the importance of his words. Of course there are those who refuse to, those who are consumed by the conflicts of the past. There is no more glaring example than the depraved banners on bonfires last week. It will take a long time but eventually their numbers will dwindle, until such time as they are ostracised.

Which brings me back to the GB. They can either understand the value they bring and act within the rules set by the board, UEFA and other authorities, or they can overplay their hand and defiantly say if you want the atmosphere we generate you have to accept everything that goes with it. If the latter is the stance they take then they will be gone from Celtic Park. They will be missed, especially by the team, we will be weaker, but Celtic will move on without them.

Really could have done with a game today to distract attention. Roll on Wednesday.

  34. Macjay,

Why a silence from the Board about the actions of the Safety Advisory Group after the Hearts game in May?

If the Safety Cert from Glasgow City Council has been in doubt, why weren’t we advised?

Don’t confuse the Safety Advisory Group with UEFA.

*Does anyone know what ‘the blocking of stairwells refers to’? (Sect 111?)

“there were further serious safety issues within the Green Brigade section, require the club to take immediate action to comply with its responsibilities under the applicable legislation.”

*Do you know apart from the ‘Illicit Banners'(which is a UEFA charge)…what other serious safety issues require immediate action under (what) legislation?

*Were we served with some kind of a notice after the Hearts game?

(Bye the way the statement you post is incomplete. The full statement refers further to GCC and the Safety Advisory Group).

All in all a complete shambles of communication by the Plc, IMO.
