Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

Back in the Lisbon Lions era there was an unbelivable atmosphere at Celtic Park. Singing noise chanting. But it wasn’t a place for the faint-hearted. Over crowding, being crushed against barriers were normal. Bottles and cans being lobbed towards the pitch but falling short on fans.

*but the latter ceased when a big mhan fae Burnbank requested the fhans via the View tae point out the offenders tae the authorities. It worked and I can’t recall any weeping or gnashing of teeth over asking our support tae be touts or telling Jock that fitba was his job and no policing the support.

Is there an option to ban both the GB and the Board for a few games? I might go for that!

Or I would do what my mom used to do when my brother and I were young and fighting with each other… lock them in a room together, and not let them out until we had mended fences!

I am a Lazio symapthiser (I, of course, only support, one team!) though that has been severely tested over the years by the activities of the Ultras and the general sympathy toward the extreme right that comes to the fore now and again, but is well rooted.

My worst personal experiences of Ultra trouble has been perpetrated by the Roma Ultras, but they are not exceptionally worse than others.

I struggle to understand how Celtic supporters, with our roots and tradition, can feel any affinity with such a twisted, self referencing and entitled movement. It’s like an organised crime society. That’s as generous an assessment of it as I can make. Is it because of a false romantic notion of them, or is it sheer stupidity or is it a reasoned and thought through desire to be associated with violence and aggression, hatred and alienation? i don’t know, but when I see the name at Celtic Park, it makes me sick.

Not that I would condone such things, but can you get links to watch live streams for the golf in the same way you can for football? No pun intended!

  12. Assuming two fans held up the banner then should there not be ” Justice for the 898″ ?

How’s can Brendan comment on banners he didn’t see ?

Huns calling Brendan a liar…..and yet NO claim of Healy being a LIAR after 1st leg, when he claimed he didn’t see any missiles, nor his chairman going to their scum fans….nor did honest David see any riot cops either ?

Celtic have IMO wrongly punished innocents . Surely with CCTV andcips videos, whoever hoisted the banner could be identified ?

In order that innocent Celtic fans weren’t punished by Celtic, all Celtic had to do was ask the fans respo sible to step forward ….I’d like to think that those responsible would not be wanting to see innocents punished ?

I thought the banner was feckon stupid, and I don’t condone flares either, but Celtic have acted wrongly on this occasion IMO.

I am now more fearful than ever that Celtic won’t act after any inquiry into the ebts…if so I fear many Celtic fans will turn their back on Celtic ?

  13. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Precepta,

Thanks for taking the time but I’ve seen enough to know ambiguity when I read it, it’s not challenged because it’s not been challenged no other reason, if challenged you have no real idea how it would go. You’ve spent a considerable amount of time trying to dispel the notion. I suspect had you spent time presenting a decent case on referees dereliction to their duty of care for players well being that resulted in a serious injury, to the HSE then like a supporters legal challenge to the immunity of football from legal or criminal proceedings, the whole myth would fall on its fundament.

Because no one has done it does not mean it can’t be done. Dismissing the idea like you have is actually quite arrogant. Because you have not considered interpretations of ambiguous statements does not allow you discount them.

“Normal participation of the activity”, implies the rules being equitably applied, demonstrate the rules are not being equitably applied and you remove the condition the statement is based on which then requires the injuries become reportable.

I understand you will continue to be blinkered on this, as you say you have spent your working life with you interpretation and that’s no likely to change anytime soon or be changed by someone who has only a passing interest in the subject and has never been paid for their opinion on the subject.

Not investigating because they don’t have the manpower is a considerable distance from your original statement that they don’t do investigations.

Anyroadup, I’m no for falling out about it, I like having educational discussions/disagreements which this was.

Have a good day and only get as bevvied as you want :)

Tontine Tim @ 3.58…big Jock was like a father figure to many of us young, success starved fans and we admired and respected him greatly…we believed he was right…he was!

Today’s younger generation is not success starved and is possibly less respectful of authority…The police behaviour at games is poor, unnecessarily aggressive, alienating even the decent fans…

One thing I will say, in those days I went for the football, nothing else…if there was singing, great-if not too bad-the performance and the result were all that mattered…
