Lose and Aberdeen season is over

593

Aberdeen will already be in town ahead of their game at Firhill tonight. Lose tonight and a season which promised so much as recently as Monday, will effectively be over.

Tomorrow’s game against Inverness will present a robust challenge for Celtic. Inverness are one of four clubs locked within a point of each other, a maximum of three of them will be in the top six after the split. Despite the fact that the Highlanders are competing in the right half of the table, with a Scottish Cup quarter final against Hamilton Accies to look forward to, they are only five points from the play-off spot.

Players will be battling for their livelihoods in every sense of the word.

Well done to Erik Sviatchenko’s old team, Midtjylland, on their Europa League win over Manchester United last night. And to the observer who noted that they have now beaten more top six teams in the England and Wales Premier League than Manchester United or Manchester City.

You wonder what last night’s results will do to the marketability of the Midtjylland players, and whether or not we would have been able to get Sviatchenko in the summer, had he stayed. Big results bring focus and scores of scouts. We nipped in at the right moment with Erik.

Good luck to Thistle tonight.

  1. Celtic will slip up a few more times (much to delight of Scottish media) so bit early to think that one defeat by our nearest challenger means we will win the league.

Haven’t had the chance to read back today …so apologies if I am going over ground that has already been covered this morning.

but I think it is dangerous to say an Aberdeen loss would end their season.

WE have dropped points in 7 of 25 league games (almost 1/3 of the league games ) this season, so we cant assume that we will run the table to the end of the season. Based on how easily Aberdeen handled the game last time (or how easily we capitulated, if that is how you choose to see it), we cant assume anything from that game … and that game excepted, we are basically level going forward.

And, unfortunately, this current Celtic team seems mentally fragile…. decent if they get ahead (usually, although we have had some good starts that ended very badly this season)…. but, we seem to panic if we go behind.

I hate even mentioning it, but didn’t we learn anything from MO’N’s last season? And that team seemed to me to be much tougher mentally than our current crop… and they still blew (i) a 5 point lead with only a few games, and (ii) a league with only a few minutes to go.

I think a large part of the problem is that this team only thinks they have to show up to win most games, and the league. Sadly, they are probably (stress… probably) right. But, the problem is that this has made this squad not work as hard as they should. This isnt a team that has successfully faced and come through a great deal of adversity …… and then this translates into a lack of confidence when confronted with a better team (Europe) or a team that is maybe not as good usually, but on the day raises it game (Aberdeen in the league, or the Ross County cup game).

I want a Celtic team to be confident every time it steps on the park …. but I dont want it to be over-confident, and I want that confidence to be rooted in reality.

there was a lot of fishy stuff on here earlier from some of our most seasoned denizens but it seems to have clamed down now.

    28 %…..Closer to 1 in 4. :-)

    Confidence deficit.

    Two aspects.

Loss of Big Van Dyke and his sidekick and recently the absence of Broony. Must have had a significant effect on team confidence.

    Ronny`s motivational skills ?

Maybe everyone is on a downer that the Maryhill Magyars game was rained off. Had a ticket to go wi my Jags mate. :(

adi dasler … thanks. Not sure if that is good or bad for us …. think it would have been a tough game for the sheep, and if they dropped points, we may have been less nervous tomorrow in what I think might be a tough game fur us.

  7. mike in toronto on

Macjay … why do you think I ended up doing what I do ? I was never very good at maths, obviously! :)

I think you are right about missing VVD and JD from last season …. last year, both of them were comfortable on the ball, and often brought the ball forward … even more than NB and SB, I would have said …. this took a lot of the pressure of the 2 midfielders …

this year, all of our CB’s (except the new guy, who has impressed me … albeit in limited action) look a bit nervous, and not as comfortable bringing the ball out. This has put more pressure on NB, SB, etc., none of whom have looked very assured this season. This also leads to more of our play going down the wings, and teams, knowing this, are setting up to counter this ….

for me, VVD was a loss, but Denayer was an ever bigger loss. I thought he was a great player. He is probably a bit small to be a top class CB, but I thought he would turn into a great holding midfielder. I must admit that I haven’t followed his career much since he left us, so I cant say how he has done this season. But I really rated him, and expect that he will go onto great things.

It will be tough for us no matter what happened with eberdeen

But if we win then I assume the media will put the pressure on Dick mcinnes………

So we have not dropped points in 18 out of 25 league games, a decent record heading into March….. Has the makings of a title winning team

Think somebody posted earlier Aberdeen’s recent away record not being that great, but am sure that could get turned to suit if need be

  11. Was having a family discussion there about the Rugby Park pitch. Hot topic since my son in laws company laid it. Very angry family about Warburton the W……

This fake is a drone being worked from above. His words are lies. Nice to see he follows in line with the previous two managers of his mob. These lies threaten his business. Bad Publicity.

  12. My ‘other’ Bhoy was thinking on coming to the game tomorrow but was put off by the £28 ticket pric (understandable). if any of you lovely CQNrs have a spare (adult) for tomorrow and would be happy with a £15 donation to Mary’s Meals or indeed a charity of your own choice my lad would be delighted. I’m on jobo.baldie@yahoo.co.uk

  13. Read on another Celtic Site that a Sevco group of Fans are helping with the cost of building a Stand at Murray Park.to be honest that’s what our club Celtic should have done Yrs ago at Barrowfield it should have been upgraded build new facilities so us fans could pay a few pounds to see and support the development squad, but we don’t seem to ask for these things to get done, some are to obsessed with Sevco, then I said to myself oh I forgot this board at Celtic don’t listen to our ordinary fans also some on board wouldn’t want to see a dip in there Bonus

Any success we had last season was based on the CB pairing …both are a huge miss ..and they scored goals

Their replacements .., with the exception of Sviatchenko, have been poor

  15. Margaret McGill on

“The Welfare State was a crucial factor in integrating ‘Irish’ Catholics into Scotland, and it gave working-class people from both denominations a common cause. But it did not simply replace the Empire as the ‘cement’ of the Union. Racism against Black people existed in Scotland before substantial numbers of people from the Indian subcontinent settled, and their migration provided a new set of scapegoats. World War Two also gave British militarism a renewed populist appeal, and public support for the Scottish regiments remains high. Renewed conflict in Ireland politicised a minority in Scotland, but it found a more significant resonance within the British Army. Scots regiments again distinguished themselves with brutal reputations in the North, including the Black Watch and KOSB. The Daily Record and at least 26 Scottish MPs supported the 1990s campaign to free two Scots Guards who shot a young unarmed Catholic they had already searched, in the back, as he ran away. A number of central characters in loyalist/British forces collusion also had Scottish connections, including an Aberdonian Brigadier. The connections between them and the England football hooligans who chant ‘No Surrender to the IRA’ are not so hard to see.”

  16. PFayr .

Very true…also very quiet here tonight? I think Sviatchenko and Boyata could do alright though. Certainly more than enough for the SPHELL. But…but ..but. The old chestnut can they step up against better players. I suppose we will soon find out.

Can’t blame your lad , even £25 is too expensive.

Maths..Just having a laugh with you.

About a month ago ,there was some talk on here that there may be a possibility that Denayer could be available for purchase because he wasn`t first choice in the club he was loaned out to. Turkish,I think.

Under the circumstances, the defence has performed better than I would have expected them to . And has dramatically improved since the Hamilton game I saw in October where it was ,as far as I am concerned , embarrassing ,particularly with Blackett at left back.

The great Dane looks the part to me.

    Uncompromising is good.

    Cautiously optimistic am I.

  19. mike in toronto on

    Gerryfae …

dont disagree … Aberdeen’s record is, obviously, worse than ours ….or we wouldn’t be ahead.

I am not assuming we will lose the league … I think we should and probably will win the league … but I think it is dangerous to think that if Aberdeen loses the next game it is over ….

P67 seems to be pretty well connected with the club, and, for me, CQN has become a bit of unoffical vehicle for the club ….I would just hope that the players are not looking at it the same was as P67 … I dont want them counting chickens until they are hatched. That’s all.

  20. Im guessing Paul’s point here is to try to put some pressure onto a sheep team who are suspect when put on the spot. Pity their game is off as it may work in their favour. We now need a win to keep the pressure up and any points dropped will give them a little hope. If they had played tonight they were likely to drop at least a couple of points and if so the stuffing could have been knocked out of them. Big day tomorrow.
