Lose and Aberdeen season is over

593

Aberdeen will already be in town ahead of their game at Firhill tonight. Lose tonight and a season which promised so much as recently as Monday, will effectively be over.

Tomorrow’s game against Inverness will present a robust challenge for Celtic. Inverness are one of four clubs locked within a point of each other, a maximum of three of them will be in the top six after the split. Despite the fact that the Highlanders are competing in the right half of the table, with a Scottish Cup quarter final against Hamilton Accies to look forward to, they are only five points from the play-off spot.

Players will be battling for their livelihoods in every sense of the word.

Well done to Erik Sviatchenko’s old team, Midtjylland, on their Europa League win over Manchester United last night. And to the observer who noted that they have now beaten more top six teams in the England and Wales Premier League than Manchester United or Manchester City.

You wonder what last night’s results will do to the marketability of the Midtjylland players, and whether or not we would have been able to get Sviatchenko in the summer, had he stayed. Big results bring focus and scores of scouts. We nipped in at the right moment with Erik.

Good luck to Thistle tonight.

Bit over-confident there, Paul. Looked like Aberdeen’s league challenge was over in October/November.

Midtjylland look to have a good setup. Dare I call it Moneyball? :-)

Have KPIs about getting academy players into the first team and take them seriously.

  2. Seems Roberts,Allan and Christie are not in Development Squad for today’s game, hopefully a bit of creativity in the team tomorrow.

Steady rain over celtic park .. I guess the playing surface will deteriorate badly during the match tomorrow

The guy who scored 2nd against Man Utd was a tidy player.. billion commentating on itv highlights raving about him.. Said West Ham keen on him but the lad wanted to stay to develop…

Can’t see anything other than same starting eleven as last week. If any of those three are to feature it will be from the bench but can’t see three changes on the bench. Roberts for Forrest? Allan for Mulgrew? Christie for McGregor?

  7. I agree with Paul, this could very well be a season defining weekend in the title race. A win for Partick, then put ICT to the sword tomorrow, jobs a good’un

It’s that kind of arrogance that turned me away from religion generally and Catholicism specifically.

I don’t know if I subscribe to the view that “Scotland is Racist”, but we certainly have a problem with racism and it’s a problem we are reluctant to recognise.

There are around 200,000 people living in Scotland from Black or Minority Ethnic backgrounds. Since the introduction of ‘racial aggravation’ to criminal offences in 2003/04, more than 25% of the BME individuals living in Scotland have been the victim of a ‘racially aggravated’ crime.

It’s important to note that for the purposes of collecting data, a crime is noted in the records when charges are brought against the perpetrator (whether or not conviciton follows).

This serves to diminish the number of reported Hate Crimes as, in the event that no perpetrator is charged, no Hate Crime is recorded.

Thus, should a building, say someone’s home, be vandalised with racist graffiti, unless a person is charged with the offence, the crime will not be included in the Hate Crime data.

The majority of Hate Crimes are thus unrecorded.

Nevertheless, despite the constraint on accurately reporting such incidents, 1 in 4 BME people living in Scotland have been the victim of an ‘official’ race hate crime in the past 12 years.

4% of the population of Scotland suffer 80% of the Hate Crimes committed.

You won’t read that in the newspapers, and it won’t be debated on the TV.

Perhaps we’re ashamed of it. Perhaps we’re inured to it. Perhaps it’s not really that important to us because it’s not ‘sectarian’, and ‘sectarian’ is more important than ‘racism’.

Perhaps we are really only interested in offences directed at ourselves. Perhaps “Scotland is Racist” after all.

  11. Tend to agree with Paul, however I will take no pleasure in an Aberdeen collapse if we ourselves don’t improve during the remainder of the season.

If we win the title quite comfortably only due to our opponents failing and we do not improve to enable a CL qualification – it will be almost be a pyrrhic victory.

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

Of course, add to this avalanche of race-related hate crime the huge amount of hate crime directed at people on the basis of their (assumed) sexuality, then the distressingly high incidence of hate crime directed at disabled people, and finally our own shabby religious bigotries, you might well argue that when it comes to intolerance, Scotland is pretty indiscriminate.

We pretty much hate everyone. Equally.

Can’t remember. I’m a regular goldfish. Probably just noting the ‘depth’ of our squad. There was a discussion on a squad of 33, 3 players for each position. If that’s our intention, we’re just about there I’d say.

Whether it’s a good thing, or that it’s working, is a different matter mind you.

Perhaps it’s because it doesn’t fit in with the view that Scots have of themselves as being somehow different from, morally superior to and more progressive than, say, for example, the English.

Is this what we are really talking about when we talk of racism in Scotland?

“The matter of anti-Catholicism in Scotland is usually guaranteed to spark fierce debate.

Amazingly, discussion of the subject tends not to be about how best to tackle it but rather about whether or not it exists.

It is both bizarre and frustrating to see that a matter of objective fact – based on, among other data, Crown Office conviction statistics – proving that anti-Catholicism is demonstrably present in Scotland, is treated as a matter of opinion or a “point of view”. “
