Maeda return and Bernardo’s low price

382

Brendan Rodgers will hopefully see Daizen Maeda at Lennoxtown earlier than planned, as Japan’s World Cup qualifier in North Korea has been cancelled by the hosts due to “unforeseen circumstances”.   Fifa have yet to decide if the game can go ahead at a neutral venue but that is currently considered unlikely.

Reports in Japan suggest the cancellation is due to the outbreak of an infectious disease in the country, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is deadly and makes international travel unnecessarily risky.

Daizen is a nailed-on starter for the important games after the international break, so having him back early and focussed on the priorities ahead is important.

I’m not having any “a bit steep” chat about Paulo Bernardo’s reported €7.5m asking price from Benfica.  The player only recently turned 22 and has the core ability we should be looking to turn into a top player – just as we did with Matt O’Riley.  This is the going rate, anything less than that and you’re not taking a talent out of Portugal.

  1. I thought Scotland were the better side first half and unlucky Christie didn’t take the lead, with a header off keeper/bar.

    Good game for a friendly.

  2. 418 is a rancid racist keyboard warrior I suggest you scroll by until they are barred for life.

Meantime good first half in the Netherlands played like a competitive match and Netherlands scored with a fine shot from range. Scotland playing well good in possession and creating also.

  3. As for the three numbered one, I’m picturing some bawbag in his Maw’s basement.

Easiest scroll by ever and not worth a reaction bhoys.

  4. Never seen Scotland play and pass the ball as well against a top side.Tremendous improvement.Only behind to a 25 yard exocet.Magnificent hit.KT looking superb.Should be top of our shopping list.Wee Greg can take the strain in a good few games.Keep KT purring.

I stand by earlier comments on Bernardo.5 million would be a great buy.Loads to come from this kid.Too many write off players too quickly.Never learn, and carry on doing it.If MOR goes, ready made player to fill the space.

And yet he is still here….

Just get his IP address and ban it, he could mask it but that needs some intelligence…..

I can’t make it any clearer.

I too want Matt O’ Riley to stay.

Neither you or RimTimTim are more “ambitious ” than me in that regard.

We only differ on what we would do when a player tells you he wants to leave for a “better” club and a bigger salary.

If you keep him to his contract, as you and RimTim suggest, you risk having an unwilling player on a work to rule. Do you get the same effort and skill from him? Do you get a poisoned player affecting the mood around the club? These are the real world problems that do not get addressed by proclaiming an Uber-Celt approach or an approach that does not see players as both assets and commodities.

These players often join Celtic on the promise that, if they develop, they will be allowed to leave on a decent fee agreed by club and Player rep in advance. If you then turn round and say he cannot leave- will you get a season’s performance like Edouard in the failed 10iar season or a more honest one like Kris Ajer- who left anyway?. Will you indeed get a reaction like Leo Hjelde who refused to sign a contract extension after he saw how Ajer was treated?

In the end it matters not whether you or me or RimTim are more ambitious. It matters even less whether “we” see players as commodities or assets (try telling that to assets like Lagerbielke who never get played).

In the end it is the player’s ambition and attitude that decides, not the fan’s.

Paul McStay stayed with us as a shining light through many seasons of failure. I loved that but it was his choice. James Forrest also stayed with us and faced calls in every year bar his first two with us, to show some ambition or, as the fans put it, “to leave us so we could buy better than him.” Henrik stayed at the cost of a transfer fee and he was well worth the sacrifice. But that too, was the player’s decision.

I still love Kieran Tierney as a player and a Celtic fan. I understand fully why he left and do not begrudge him his success and wealth. I feel less or no affection for John McGinn, who is also no doubt a big Celtic fan, but he never played for us and, more importantly, turned down the chance to do so because a Villa manager “promised” him a first team spot. The same manager that got sacked a few weeks after McGinn signed.

So- I see little differnce in the qualities of our respective emotions or support. I only see a little less willingness to engage with the views of players, who do not think like supporters, at least during the times when they are commodities/assets.

Caught the second half of the Scotland game. A decent performance ending up a bit of a doing.

If I was to take any positives from it it would be that Souttar was to blame for a couple of the goals…

  12. Majestic – shame you didn’t see the first half – we were better.

McTominay also not at the races for 2nd and 3rd goals, although good going forward.

  13. porteous and hendry played well but have been exposed for pace communication and spacing (2nd goal the striker got in between them) for a few of the goals

2-0 was harsh, never mind 4,Scotland need a decent striker and a winger, played some reality good stuff, good shape about them,….from not the biggest Scotland fan…

Just after 2-0 I went to msg one of the mindset coaches that work with some of the squad the exact same thing

    WBC,

Tremendous player, he’s got a touch of class about him. His body positioning as he was taking and preparing to take the ball was brilliant – he was in control of what was hap next well before it happened.

Interestingly an ex Hun, Holliday maybe, says that having played with both, he reckons Lennon Miller is a better player for his age than Gilmour
