Maeda return and Bernardo’s low price

382

Brendan Rodgers will hopefully see Daizen Maeda at Lennoxtown earlier than planned, as Japan’s World Cup qualifier in North Korea has been cancelled by the hosts due to “unforeseen circumstances”.   Fifa have yet to decide if the game can go ahead at a neutral venue but that is currently considered unlikely.

Reports in Japan suggest the cancellation is due to the outbreak of an infectious disease in the country, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is deadly and makes international travel unnecessarily risky.

Daizen is a nailed-on starter for the important games after the international break, so having him back early and focussed on the priorities ahead is important.

I’m not having any “a bit steep” chat about Paulo Bernardo’s reported €7.5m asking price from Benfica.  The player only recently turned 22 and has the core ability we should be looking to turn into a top player – just as we did with Matt O’Riley.  This is the going rate, anything less than that and you’re not taking a talent out of Portugal.

Special Congratulations to your daughter. HH

  2. Congrats scaniel grandweans are sent down tae us to make us as frankie bhoy once said feel so young

  3. Many Thanks for all the well wishes. Just so relieved our daughter has survived to tell the tale. It has been touch and go at times. The resolve and bravery women have in motherhood is astounding.

Majestic Hartson. You’re right, Chateau Musar , it was and I think it was about £30. I justified it by saying Mrs S was scoffing a champagne at the time which cost more. ( We were celebrating the 2020 League title) I remember writing to WDH to thank him…. in the new Southern General Hospital – QE&U hospital- as I knew he was corresponding to CQN from there at that time.

    Much missed.

  4. All the best Scaniel

God bless your lass and your grandwean.

I did not come from a family who had any serious interest in football .

My hometown of Buckhaven was a town dominated by Rangers supporters .

I saw Celtic live for the first time in 1972 .

From the age of 12 I have followed Celtic home and away domestically and into Europe .

I have travelled by supporters bus ,train ,car ,ferry ,and by air .

I did not attend an RC school ,and when I travelled on the local Methil and district cs bus ,I was an outsider .

An outsider who was made very welcome .

But from that age my whole life has been dominated by Celtic .

There have been high’s and lows .

I have stood outside many away grounds ticketless ,touting for a ticket .

I have sat amongst amongst the home fans at many an away fixture .

I have ended up back in the pub or sitting listening to the match on the radio ,when I was unsuccessful in getting a ticket .

The toughest times were when the Darnel did their 9 .

A few seasons the chase was effectively over by the Blackpool illuminations in October .

The tougher the times the stauncher my support .

I have cried after defeat and shed tears of joy in success.

But I know that I am not special .

There are many thousands like me .

From my age demographic I still see some of the faces at matches ,home and away to this day .

I call them Celtic faces .

Some want to hear nothing negative about Celtic others complain at a misplaced pass.

That’s life .We are a broad church .

You come across as thinking that you are a better Celtic supporter than most .

That you look down on others .

I know that you are a Celtic diehard ,but you continually have a go at those that simply want Celtic to be the best version of themselves that they can be .

Every time that Celtic fail ,I am wounded .

Everytime that they succeed I enjoy it and then want us to do our very best to win the next trophy .

    We share a common ambition.

To see Celtic top the trophy haul of the two Rangers clubs ,before we die .

I personally would love another Seville ,but this time winning .

Try and stop having a go at those that don’t have the same mindset as you .

After all,we support the same team .

  7. Good Morning Celts… Spring Is Verdant…

Congratulations Scaniel, a true blessing for you daughter and all your family….

Some very good stuff reading back, great comment and true perspective by TINYTIM @ 2:32 AM,

    SFtBs @ 6:39 PM,

Another well presented and thought out post.

My feelings on our recruitment in the last ten or so years, both in general terms and specific players has been made clear, my mind made up.

Only a change in the known facts, will now see me change my opinion.

Yet to the point in question.

BR Mk1 and Ange were just exemplars

“BR Mk1, Ange, showing what can be achieved with ambition, ability and application.”

That is not a slight on anybody else and certainly doesn’t mean these, are the only two professionals or successful managers we have had, far from it of course.

So, to get back to the point at hand.

A bid came in for Matt O’Riley in the summer from Leeds United, normally the executive would be minded to sell the “high value player”.

The Manager wanted to keep Matt and the executive rejected the bid and supported the Manager in getting the player to sign a revised long term contract.

Another bid came in for Matt in January from Athletico Madrid, it was again rejected.

This is the kind of ambition and purpose Celtic need.

We must keep hold of our quality players like Matt and add quality and experience to the group.

If Celtic fail to get into the UCL group stage next season, it will be for one reason only – poor preparation.

Yet, that should not take anything away from the fact we need a much better first team squad.

In last summer’s transfer window, we failed to get the necessary quality and experience in that was required, whether that was due to our recruitment strategy, personnel or a mix of both, the chap ultimately responsible has gone on “to pursue fresh challenges”.

This is another sign we are going to get much more particular and ambitious in the quality of our recruitment – on piste if you will;)

So when calling for more ambition, I’m currently looking at squad that is better than Ange inherited and better than he left (taking account Jota and Starfelt were always for the off…)

At the end of the day, I’m saying no more than – “where there is a will, there’s a way”.

So let’s keep the core of the team together and enhance the squad in the early summer…

    Have A Grand Day

    And yes, I’m off oot…

    Hail Hail

  8. TINYTIM, excellent post I associate with all of it.

I had the benefit of coming from a Celtic daft household but all of the rest of it chimes. Thanks

Some believe that unwavering blind support for the board is the way forward. That forelock tugging gives me the boak.

So, James Trafford, the Burnley goalkeeper has been brought into the England squad to replace injured Sam Johnstone. That means Jack Butland is not considered amongst the top four keepers. I’m surprised by that. So who was tipping him for inclusion in the original squad?

  14. FRED C @9:12 a.m.

Good morning, John. Just back in from doing the donx. They’ve just been told they’re having a duvet day as it’s wet, blustery and cold down here- and that’s just me!

We took in a sweet donkey with a horrible backstory the week before Xmas and she also turned out to be pregnant so we’re all on midwife watch for her too….but that’s another story for another day. We did ask her this morning if she could get a move on but she’s not for budging.

Trusting all is well with you and yours.

  15. WBC at 9:22

Been keeping an eye on James Trafford all season as grandson plays in goals and follows him. Brilliant shot-stopper, fantastic reflexes and very young. Gets targeted by EPL bully boys at corners, free kicks etc. but Kompany has stood by him.

Let me join those who congratulated you on the quality of that post. I don`t share your view of Burnley 78 but that is of no matter.

I feel CQN is going downhill but more posts like your 2:32 am post will help reverse that trend.

    Well done that man :-))

It was a really good Celtic night on Friday for sure. Plenty there knew the history.

The above 2 lines is sufficient B78,most Celtic fans i know who were there know,or have played a part in Celtics history, not a word about it.i was looking for comment on who was there, their comment and of the general atmosphere.

Again we get a review through a rather gokky skewer on how’some on here’could run the club better and sadly it comes across as i am a better Celtic fan than you, which i am sure you dont mean to.

Celtic fans have criticised board interference as far back as i can remember,in those halcyon days

of the 50s when fans went to see Celtic as thats all we had Bob Kelly was getting it,as soon as he let ‘control’ go look what happened,Jock came in and won it all.Desmond white reinstalled that interference as Celtic had record transfer fees for Lou Macari,Davie Hay and Kenny Dalglish, who will ever forget the handshake and pools job offer to the manager who put our clubs name up there.

Less said bout the peril scurrilous kelly and white with their pact put Celtic in.minutes from you and i talking in 3rd lanark terms

We then had Fergus who done in 5 years exactly what he said on the tin,Alas since then shareholding democracy has disappeared in Celtic, now the gaps are wider than anything under the ‘pact’ dynasties.

I dont think many on here would have the business acumen to do better than what is being done at the moment,i think you are misinterpreting their dissent(last3 transfer windows), their exclusion from any club participation apart from being a good little customer, the fact a club founded for poor dinner tables has an uncomfortable and extraordinary amount in the bank,

We have never won a ½ or a ¼ trophy we win or we dont,we recall the barren years, but you are right singularly in Celtic and their fan base always wanting to do a little bit better, its been a stable pillar since Br.Walfrid stood on the alter at St

Marys.thats all fans are expressing, they are not using it to beat Celtic, its tbe nature of the blog

Scaniel…good to see Southgate is giving Trafford a call up. He was dropped recently by Kompany so this call up will possibly boost any potential lost confidence…

Many congratulations on the both of your grandson. I hope and pray that your daughter recovers well.

Wonderful post and a great read. You have summed up exactly how I feel and I’m sure thousands upon thousands of Celtic fans. Get right behind the team but when standards slip and the Board fail to match the aspirations of the support, start to ask serious questions. We are failing our club if we don’t do our best to keep standards at a level worthy of of Celtic Football Club.

  23. ChairBhoy

A great post from you too. Congratulations. I agree that we need to hold on to a core number of players if we are to see any squad development and improvement in Europe.

Ibrox fan boys aka SMSM, when any Rangers* player plays a few good games is now being considered for an international call up hence bumping up any sale value. I have no doubt that if Warburton was the England manager (he was supposed to be by now wasn’t he?) he would have called up Butland.

    Will they ever learn?

  25. garygillespieshamstring on

I was pleased that we got a lot of guys on extended contracts.

However I am also concerned about us holding on to players who don’t want to stay.

Still believe Edouard downed tools as did Ntcham and Moussa Dembele worked his ticket also.

I’m afraid the modern player and agent regard contracts as not worth the paper upon which they are written. At least not binding on them if a bigger league or pay packet is beckoning.
