Maeda return and Bernardo’s low price

382

Brendan Rodgers will hopefully see Daizen Maeda at Lennoxtown earlier than planned, as Japan’s World Cup qualifier in North Korea has been cancelled by the hosts due to “unforeseen circumstances”.   Fifa have yet to decide if the game can go ahead at a neutral venue but that is currently considered unlikely.

Reports in Japan suggest the cancellation is due to the outbreak of an infectious disease in the country, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is deadly and makes international travel unnecessarily risky.

Daizen is a nailed-on starter for the important games after the international break, so having him back early and focussed on the priorities ahead is important.

I’m not having any “a bit steep” chat about Paulo Bernardo’s reported €7.5m asking price from Benfica.  The player only recently turned 22 and has the core ability we should be looking to turn into a top player – just as we did with Matt O’Riley.  This is the going rate, anything less than that and you’re not taking a talent out of Portugal.

The Tsunami of heart issues has been because of the vaxx genocide attack from ALL Western fake Liberal…pro Woke Governments under the orders of those who psychopathically want to wipe out ALL Western countries because their mainly Christian White populations come from the Roman, Celtic, Viking, Aryan etc bloodlines who are an eternal enemy of those who are Genociding Palestinians by the hundreds of thousands.

  3. Desperate when you have guys on here assuming Matt O’ will be leaving next season. If that’s the ambition among the support no wonder Desmond doesn’t invest more.

  4. boondock saint on

All the talk about transfers and what positions we need to buy is intriguing. I just happened to watch a 5 minute video of Brian McClairs celtic goals last night and that was followed by Charlies Nicholas and his goals for Celtic. Jeez we had some brilliant strikers in the early and mid 80s, and that is not including me talking about George McCluskey and the late great Frank McGarvey. imagine having one of those guys in the box for crosses today. I don’t include a certain player from the same time as Choccy as his name shall not be mentioned. Our school band just came back from a week in Ireland, and I just heard a kid walking down the hall singing South Australia, he got a shock when I joined in and we were belting it doon the corridors.

Obscure question, not including people like the Maestro and Danny Mac, and Feed the Bear, Tommy Burns, what were some of your best players watching in the 80s. My top five were, not in any order,

    1. Tom McAdam, still remember him swinging from the hampden cross bar

    2. Davie Provo, never gave up on the wing

    3. Murdo McLeod, that Bhoy could shoot

    4. Frank McGarvey, the sheer joy on his face when he scored for us

    5. John Collins, how much did we depend on him and the Maestro from 89-95?????

  5. One of the challenges I set myself each year is to look around at the other SPFL teams and see who might be worthy of interest. Usually I can’t find many goalies or defenders of interest, but a few interesting midfielders appear and occasionally a decent attacker.

This year has not been a vintage year. There are many positions where EPL reserves or 4th choice players have come up and looked better than the first choice player in Scotland in their position. As usual, I don’t pick Sevco players ( I would only consider Butland, Tavernier & Lawrence would be considered, plus McAusland, if he wasn’t as ugly as he is). I know they are challenging strongly for the title but they have really wasted players- never gave Diallo a chance, played Cifuentes, a decent DM, as a right winger and have never got Danilo fit enough to challenge eejits like Dessers & Lammers.

Anyway I have picked Team One and Team Two from the best of the rest as follows:-

    Team 1

    Roos (Dons)

Mayo (Killie) Kent (Hearts) Fish (Hibs) Beck (Dundee)

McGrath (Dons) McCowan (Dundee) Spittal (Well)

    Miovski (Dons) Shankland (Hearts)

    Coach- Robinson (St. Mirren)

    Team 2

    Dennis (Killie)

Cadden (Hibs) Gogic (St. Mirren) Findlay (Killie) Kingsley (Hearts)

Armstong (Killie) Barron (Dons) Dhanda (Ross Co.)

Youan (Hibs) & Murray (Ross Co.)

    Coach ( Tony Doc- Dundee)

    Subs: Wickens (Ross Co.)

    Lennon Miller- Well

    Cameron-Dundee

    Watson- Killie

    Boyle- Hibs

There are very few who are yet real Celtic standard. Of the younger ones, the best prospects are McCowan, Beck & Barron. Of the more senior players, Shankland & Miovski & Spittal are easily the best but they already have their next contract planned or are over-priced.

The 2 young Dundee players & Lennon Miller (who hasn’t played often enough to be in my teams), are potential targets who would need to be loaned out to continue their development. But the two I would give more serious consideration to are:

Jamie McGrath- he will be 28 in September but he has impressed at both St. Mirren & Aberdeen- he tackles and scores and could do a Johnny Hayes type job for us.

Lewis Mayo- versatile at Right back and Centre back. Tall- would not cost much and would add depth to a position we are weak in as a squad back up.

  6. Rimtimtim

It has nothing to do with ambition when posters speculate about players leaving and wanting to leave. It is a reality.

I’d prefer Matt to stay and develop even further with us but the reality is the player has a say in his own future and Matt has a good idea of how good he is and of the bigger clubs and salaries available out there.

If a player wants to go, we have a duty to get as much for them as possible.

Ambition and reality have to accommodate. You can’t keep an unhappy good player because the first adjective will drown out the second one.

  7. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

We could buy him for £6m, sell him for £25m and then replace him for £2m. That’s the way (the ONLY way) to improve the team. Apparently…….

  8. My friends in Celtic,

Any player with a vowel at the end of his name can add millions of dosh onto his price tag.

    Paulo Bernardo has two.

Now imagine we had a Paul Bernard from a Scottish team whose development and stastictics were the exact same.

How much would we be willing to pay ?

    HH.

  9. Tried to contribute to the Legendary Celtic players but couldn’t. So, imo, THE most important player I have had the pleasure to watch has to be Bobby Murdoch. As Jock Stein said “when Bobby plays, Celtic play”. There can be no higher praise.

My all time favourite is Charlie Gallagher, whose corner kicks headed in by Billy McNeil, have contributed enormously to the success epitomised by the Lisbon Lions.

  11. It looks like Varadkar got caught with his hands in the cookie jar with RTE trying to not mention him by name which would reflect badly on their Western Media agenda against Western peoples.

  12. SFtBs @ 5:50 PM,

You may be amazed to know, that I’m with Rimtimtim on this.

We need to keep our best players and build the core of a team.

It is the only way we are going to improve.

One step forward, one step back and another “rebuild”, cost us money.

Yes, allowing high value players to run down their contracts is totally unwise.

Yet Matt signed a new contract and gets a better salary, Celtic get longer time from a quality player and can improve his ability and value.

In reality, how much value did we get from VvD, a world class player, that temporarily improved the seive.

We need to drop the idea of players as commodities and start understanding their value as real assets.

    Hail Hail
