Brendan Rodgers will hopefully see Daizen Maeda at Lennoxtown earlier than planned, as Japan’s World Cup qualifier in North Korea has been cancelled by the hosts due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Fifa have yet to decide if the game can go ahead at a neutral venue but that is currently considered unlikely.
Reports in Japan suggest the cancellation is due to the outbreak of an infectious disease in the country, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is deadly and makes international travel unnecessarily risky.
Daizen is a nailed-on starter for the important games after the international break, so having him back early and focussed on the priorities ahead is important.
I’m not having any “a bit steep” chat about Paulo Bernardo’s reported €7.5m asking price from Benfica. The player only recently turned 22 and has the core ability we should be looking to turn into a top player – just as we did with Matt O’Riley. This is the going rate, anything less than that and you’re not taking a talent out of Portugal.

Some mhan wee Bertie, giant character. I did my coaching badges at Largs at the same time as Bertie, way back in the early 70s – there were 7 or 8 national coaches running the course and about 60 ‘participants’ and Bertie shone out the whole time. It was quite funny watching the varius coaches trying to ‘teach’ Bertie how to go about coaching.
Roy Small, a weel kent name in the game at the time, was demonstrating how to defend a free kick at the edge of the box. I had the misfortune to be organising the wall, under direction from Roddy McKenzie the current Norn Iron goalkeeper, when Bertie put the ball down and smashed the ball into the empty net. A flumoxed Roy Small attempted to rebuke Bertie who just gave him the smile with all the teeth showing and said “Goals are what it’s all about Roy”. Cue hoots of laughter from the groups on the embankment watching.

Brilliant. League trophy was there and got a pic with that. Broony looked great as did Jackie Mac and Peter Grant. All were brilliant in their talks. Tosh McKinlay closed it and was hilarious.
Sat a table with a boy who is a tradesman for John Fallon. Said he’s an amazing fan of the club to this day, never misses even a youth or women’s team game and is always at Airdrie for those. Shared a great story that Ronnie Simpson didn’t injure himself in the warm up for the Montevideo play off against Racing Club. He was just 💩ing it from the mad crowd!! TBF Fallon said he too was 💩ing it when he had to go on and never went back into his 6 yard box the whole match 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Has also hated the Board ever since Desmond White took his Lisbon medal off him…

Absolutely. When we hear that a young Scottish player is going to Italy or being linked e.g. Stephen Welsh, we immediately think they’ll make him a far better player and we’re probably correct. Crazy. Why can’t we make Lennoxtown our own little Italy? BTW haven’t seen much of the boy Miller at Motherwell but he’s getting great reviews.

When I touted for Bernardo,the past couple of days,it was not necessarily for that player.What I was trying to say is that the utter nonsense most fans have bought into,about signing”Quality players” is just that,a nonsense.Quality players have too many choices,leagues,environment,wages,which we cannot compete with.
Transfer fees,wages,way out of our league ,sadly,but a fact of life.We have to look for,so far,undiscovered talents,who are on the threshold of being very good.I put Bernardo in there because of his pedigree.Last season,he started 23 games for Benfica,,in spite of being a protégé of the Benfica academy.
Jota,CCV,were not classed as “Quality players”,but they obviously were on the cusp.I would put Bernardo in that category.A bit of improvement,but the pedigree is there.If Khun improves at the rate he is showing,who came through the top German academies,surely it would prove a point.Just seems sometimes you are arguing with the brain washed.We are now getting teenagers from minor Scottish teams getting put into the same category,from people who were screaming out for “Quality players”.
