Maeda return and Bernardo’s low price

382

Brendan Rodgers will hopefully see Daizen Maeda at Lennoxtown earlier than planned, as Japan’s World Cup qualifier in North Korea has been cancelled by the hosts due to “unforeseen circumstances”.   Fifa have yet to decide if the game can go ahead at a neutral venue but that is currently considered unlikely.

Reports in Japan suggest the cancellation is due to the outbreak of an infectious disease in the country, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is deadly and makes international travel unnecessarily risky.

Daizen is a nailed-on starter for the important games after the international break, so having him back early and focussed on the priorities ahead is important.

I’m not having any “a bit steep” chat about Paulo Bernardo’s reported €7.5m asking price from Benfica.  The player only recently turned 22 and has the core ability we should be looking to turn into a top player – just as we did with Matt O’Riley.  This is the going rate, anything less than that and you’re not taking a talent out of Portugal.

  4. As the date for BR’s appearance before SFA Compliance Officer on disciplinary charges in respect of incompetent refereeing nears, the ground swell against VAR, those appointed to it and referees themselves grows.

This is not an issue that will be solved by the end of next week, the whole refereeing system arrangement needs fundamental change.

If you are a small shareholder and wish to support a case for change then look at Sentinel Celts

    https://sentinelcelts.com/2024/03/22/resolution-on-refereeing-standards/

to play your part in improving referee quality between now and the next AGM 8 months from now.

That gives time for consideration by Celtic of the case put forward by shareholders with not a lot of effort on shareholders part.

If the necessary 100 plus shareholders sign up (and instructions are part of the Sentinel Celts blog) then ST Holders will be provided with an opportunity to voice their support later.

The resolution is not one that can simply be voted down without an explanation and the AGM route is the way to get credible answers.

There will never be a better time to get the improvement of referee standards underway than there is now.

If Celtic lose the title this season and with it access to the new CL format by 1, 2 or 3 points, then Tynecastle will be a deciding factor and the events then cannot be allowed to continue as it makes the SPFL competition a sham one, that supporters will still be asked to fund.

If you want to hear the case discussed on The HuddleBoard podcast then check

So please have a look at the proposal and if persuaded to support, follow the instructions for signing up on Sentinel Celts..

  5. This is exactly the opposite of the point made.

You’re gonna have to define “This” and “the point made”.

To me, it all started with points about “ambition”= not selling your good players. That’s what I addressed. Was this not the topic?

Nothing works by happenchance as we have seen with out moneyball implementation.

Somethings do happen by happenchance. Your big buy can have a career ending injury in his first training session. Your player can suddenly find his playing surroundings not to be pleasing to his family (or his countrymen, in Abada’s case). A Covid season can see your players having to adjust to competitive games without spectators. But “works” was the word you used- plans work as well as happenstance allows. The best plans cope better with happenstance. If you use all your money or go into debt, you have nothing left for rainy day happenstances. And yes, we have too much money set aside at present and we have no clue as to the intention for that money

I will assume that you mean our “Moneyball” approach, which really does not suit the term as it was initially developed, was a planned strategy, which is a good thing.

Quality professionals working hard to deliver performance and results.

Define who were the quality professionals and who were not. Mark Lawell apparently did not have the credentials to fulfil a quality role as Chief Scout but Lee Congerton did and was used by our definitely Quality Manager- Brendan Rodgers and his signings stunk the place out too. So where’s the quality and where’s the guarantee of definite improvement that gets you your money back.

BR Mk1, Ange, showing what can be achieved with ambition, ability and application.

I loved Ange’s football. I’d watch it for entertainment value but……….

what did it get us. Much less than WGS’s more restricted, conservative football. Less than Lenny, first time around too. Both these downsizing moneyball managers got us a last 16 CL place (2x in WGS’s case).

You mentioned Kris Ajer as an example of quality singing, being signed by a manager (RD) who was sen as the very epitome of our downsizing and lack of ambition. It seems our terms can be so flexible that they become meaningless. It’s ambitious, quality, and professional when it works and it’s a failed policy, conservative, expectation managed when……. it works just the same.

You describe the so-called “Moneyball” as business dogma- pr, expectation management and not a football emphasising approach.

I ask again. Who in the European peripheral leagues (don’t include Portugal and The Netherlands as comparators) is using the spend it all, replace a £10m sale with a £10m buy approach. Don’t use Atalanta or Brentford either- they are in the Top 5 leagues and one of them has done nothing in Europe.

It’s frustrating to understand your limitations but……. it is necessary to do so in Sport and it needn’t be expectation management. Anyway promising a new approach, unused and untried anywhere, will guarantee better because that approach also manages expectation and relies on PR. Ange challenged the players to believe they could do better and, in many many games, he helped make it happen. He never once in management said “Give me more money and I’ll spend my way to success, regardless of what you can afford.” His recent words on Spurs “competing” in the CL were interpreted as such by some Celtic supporters but I guarantee you, that is not Ange’s ethics or his football approach. He uses his head and his heart, as coaches should, to get the best out of his players. He has never spent his way out of trouble, even when he has more money at Spurs- he operates within budget. He watched Harry Kane leave and said- this changes nothing- we still win.

I like Brendan as a coach and I loved Ange as a coach – but we were still 4th in the CL under both and, never higher than 3rd. I loved it but, if I felt I was being promised a new dawn of European competitiveness, the data says I was sold a pup.

    Aff oot now

  6. I see the scorer of the first goal at Anfield is none other then Ajax ‘Legend’ Derk Boerrigter…..

Can we now look forward to Derk appearing for us on May 26 at The Park against Borussia Dortmund…

This time as a ‘Celtic Legend’?

    No?

  8. Folk keep pushing rubbish about the champions league money for next season. 60 and 70 million quoted by sevco and celtic fans, game changing money. Problem is you decide to do even the most basic research to find out its just silly sums driven drivel.

UEFA have predicted a 33% rise in television money under the new 36-team format set to start from 2024-25, reports the Times. Preformance related is also gonna be a big driver of payments as well. At the same time there will be a sharp uplift in payments to europa league and conference league payments.

An extra 33% based on Celtic’s earning this year is what an added 10 million, so 40 million not 60 or 70 million. Then you add gate etc.

Conclusions, the super rich clubs will again be getting more, the middling clubs will be getting more than they previously got, but much less than the tire 1 clubs, it may be a nice wee earner for the middling clubs. The changes wil make sure overall european football clubs have more money, it’s no a game change, it’s kinda as you were.

Thanks. I hope others take the time to join too.

Some may discount the Res Route but it gets main stream attention if tabled and Celtic have to respond in public.

I’d be amazed if they said everything is hunky dory if they have not acted to convince shareholders they speak the truth.
