Maeda return and Bernardo’s low price

382

Brendan Rodgers will hopefully see Daizen Maeda at Lennoxtown earlier than planned, as Japan’s World Cup qualifier in North Korea has been cancelled by the hosts due to “unforeseen circumstances”.   Fifa have yet to decide if the game can go ahead at a neutral venue but that is currently considered unlikely.

Reports in Japan suggest the cancellation is due to the outbreak of an infectious disease in the country, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is deadly and makes international travel unnecessarily risky.

Daizen is a nailed-on starter for the important games after the international break, so having him back early and focussed on the priorities ahead is important.

I’m not having any “a bit steep” chat about Paulo Bernardo’s reported €7.5m asking price from Benfica.  The player only recently turned 22 and has the core ability we should be looking to turn into a top player – just as we did with Matt O’Riley.  This is the going rate, anything less than that and you’re not taking a talent out of Portugal.

  1. England outclassed at Wembley!

Brazil showed hints of their old greatness at both ends of the pitch.

England have made themselves favourites for the Euros and now ‘expect’ to win it.

Not on this performance they wont.

    Well done Brazil

“You’re gonna have to define “This” and “the point made”.

To me, it all started with points about “ambition”= not selling your good players. That’s what I addressed. Was this not the topic?

    You stated…

“Not scenarios where we can pretend, if we just did that; success and riches and player satisfaction automatically happens.

    My point was…

Good scouting, good coaching, good man management and [Kris Ajer] sold at the right time.

With quality professional personnel, doing quality professional work outwith and within the Club, this scenario is not only possible but necessary.

The numbers game business approach has failed over and over and over…

That’s why we need an ambitious football club with professional people who can deliver.

So your point was the opposite of what I stated.

Somethings do happen by happenchance. Your big buy can have a career ending injury in his first training session. Your player can suddenly find his playing surroundings not to be pleasing to his family (or his countrymen, in Abada’s case). A Covid season can see your players having to adjust to competitive games without spectators. But “works” was the word you used- plans work as well as happenstance allows. The best plans cope better with happenstance. If you use all your money or go into debt, you have nothing left for rainy day happenstances. And yes, we have too much money set aside at present and we have no clue as to the intention for that money

I will assume that you mean our “Moneyball” approach, which really does not suit the term as it was initially developed, was a planned strategy, which is a good thing.

OK, let me elaborate, when I said “nothing works by happenchance”, I did not mean that nothing has ever happened in the universe ever that could be regarded as happenchance.

Of course I don’t believe in determinism, if you do, maybe we need to revisit this.

What I meant was, things need to be strategised, planned and implemented in a rigourous, professional manner to ensure targets are achieved and that success is repeatable, leaving things to chance is a poor strategy and ultimately fails (doesn’t work!!).

Yes, exactly like our hit and miss and miss and miss moneyball approach, which agreed, is not a great example of moneyball.

Define who were the quality professionals and who were not. Mark Lawell apparently did not have the credentials to fulfil a quality role as Chief Scout but Lee Congerton did and was used by our definitely Quality Manager- Brendan Rodgers and his signings stunk the place out too. So where’s the quality and where’s the guarantee of definite improvement that gets you your money back.

Well, I gave examples of the quality professionals, why do I have to “define” who the quality professionals are when I gave examples – the examples given were BR Mk1 and Ange, these I define as quality professionals.

Not at all sure why Mark Lawwell and Lee Congerton are involved in this, I certainly didn’t mention them, I certainly didn’t define them as quality professionals, so I’ve no idea why they should popped up!?

I loved Ange’s football. I’d watch it for entertainment value but……….

what did it get us. Much less than WGS’s more restricted, conservative football. Less than Lenny, first time around too. Both these downsizing moneyball managers got us a last 16 CL place (2x in WGS’s case).

You mentioned Kris Ajer as an example of quality singing, being signed by a manager (RD) who was sen as the very epitome of our downsizing and lack of ambition. It seems our terms can be so flexible that they become meaningless. It’s ambitious, quality, and professional when it works and it’s a failed policy, conservative, expectation managed when……. it works just the same.

Again, bit confused about a plethora of characters that pop up…

WGS, Lenny Mk1, RD, were not examples I used.

My point was that BR Mk1 and Ange were ambitious coaches who achieved a great deal in a short time. “BR Mk1, Ange, showing what can be achieved with ambition, ability and application.”

These successes need to be built upon. If we as a Club had backed BR Mk1 or replaced him with similar quality managementand staff, we would have been able to build on a solid quality platform and maintain our momentum, we were a pot 3 side, when the rug was pulled from Brendan & Co.

Likewise Ange’s team, if we had replaced the first team players that we lost and improved on Ange’s team’s weaknesses with our recruitment, we would have went into the season and our guaranteed UCL group stage matches with much better prospects.

You describe the so-called “Moneyball” as business dogma- pr, expectation management and not a football emphasising approach.

I ask again. Who in the European peripheral leagues (don’t include Portugal and The Netherlands as comparators) is using the spend it all, replace a £10m sale with a £10m buy approach. Don’t use Atalanta or Brentford either- they are in the Top 5 leagues and one of them has done nothing in Europe.

You may ask again, in fact you may ask until your blue in the face, it’s not something that currently interests me.

My point was our recruitment strategy was based on a business approach rather than a football approach.

Buy a number of prospects, see how they work out and develop within the Celtic squad, if they become high value players sell them, if not off load them cheap or let them run down their contracts.

That is not the recruitment any manager wants, they end up with a bloated squad impossible to manage and not fit for purpose.

A lot of time and effort is put into prospects that are not Celtic class… over 100 hundred now I believe since Rangers died.

Our manager and coaches need to be supplied with quality, experienced players that improve and enhance the team, players they can truly develop and focus on.

That’s exactly what Brendan asked for when he came in.

“It’s frustrating to understand your limitations but……. it is necessary to do so in Sport and it needn’t be expectation management. Anyway promising a new approach, unused and untried anywhere, will guarantee better because that approach also manages expectation and relies on PR. Ange challenged the players to believe they could do better and, in many many games, he helped make it happen. He never once in management said “Give me more money and I’ll spend my way to success, regardless of what you can afford.” His recent words on Spurs “competing” in the CL were interpreted as such by some Celtic supporters but I guarantee you, that is not Ange’s ethics or his football approach. He uses his head and his heart, as coaches should, to get the best out of his players. He has never spent his way out of trouble, even when he has more money at Spurs- he operates within budget. He watched Harry Kane leave and said- this changes nothing- we still win.

I like Brendan as a coach and I loved Ange as a coach – but we were still 4th in the CL under both and, never higher than 3rd. I loved it but, if I felt I was being promised a new dawn of European competitiveness, the data says I was sold a pup.

Again you paint a very different scenario.

Our last CEO said every penny made would go back into the Club.

Our current CEO is saying we are striving to be an elite Club.

We are on a par in the league with a Club with much less resources, who are regularly out performing us in Europe.

We have £75 mn in the bank that we are not utilising.

So, I’m only asking Celtic to do what the CEO’s said we would do, in fact not even that, I do not want every penny spent on the Club, even coming a little short of the “elite” is acceptable, just enough investment to ensure we can become a pot 3 side.

    Have A Great Day…

I enjoy setting quiz questions, especially when it involves Celtic. I once posted,my first Celtic game circa 1953 as a 3 year old vs Belfast Celtic, at Celtic Park, Belfast. my late father, and his brother,my uncle Tosh, took me to the game,a game that was a charity fixture for De La Salle home in Kircubbin, County Down. Today, if I have some free time I will do another quiz, with focus on the Lisbon Lions. My large collection of programmes, books, newspapers and scrapbooks provide me with information👍
