Managerial talent

Derek Adams propensity to waste time and then complain about time being added on should not obscure the fact that he is a remarkably productive football manager.  Ross County, from Dingwall, population 5,000, are sitting fourth in the SPL and remain in touching distance of a place in Europe.  No need to highlight their Scottish Cup campaign in 2010.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Aberdeen have asked Ross County for permission to speak to him.  On the face of it, Aberdeen should fancy their chances of recruiting Adams but County are confident for a reason.  SPL, and in Owen Coyle’s case First Division, managers have been recruited by well-paying English clubs at levels the likes of Aberdeen cannot compete with.  County chairman, Roy McGregor, is likely to advise Adams to hold off for a more lucrative move south.

When Jimmy Calderwood left Dunfermline for Aberdeen in 2004 chairmen John Yorkston explained his surprise at Calderwood heading north, explaining that he believed one day Calderwood would move to Ibrox.  Aberdeen proved to be a plateau for Calderwood, as it has been for most over the last couple of decades.

If they don’t get Adams chances are they will go back to Motherwell; back-to-back second place finishes are exactly what is needed at Pittodrie right now.

Best of luck to Gordon Strachan on his first competitive game as Scotland manager tonight.

I missed last week’s protest by the GB as I had agreed to go to the Arthurlie v Ashfield game, as it was a 2 o’clock kick off I didn’t have time to attend the GB protest.

I will be going to the future protests. I have always been the kind of person who just can’t help himself getting involved in protests against authority where the powerful try to impose their will unjustly against the weak.

In my younger days I was active in the Young Socialist Party (WRP) where I travelled across the UK attending demos, manning picket lines etc. The overriding memory of those days isn’t of the nights at various student unions where I pulled gorgeous young politics students, it’s of Police brutality, I still to this day, 25yrs later, still dream about those events.

I have seen a good friend from Liverpool charged down by a mounted Police officer, breaking his leg so badly he required several operations to repair the damage. He still walks with a limp and is on benefits. I myself was attacked by a riot squad officer at Warrington in 1983, I had a 6 inch gaping wound in my head as a reminder of his friendliness. The mass picket in Warrington was, I believe, the first time in an industrial dispute Para-military policing more akin to that used in Northern Ireland had been used to attack picket lines. The tactics used by Police then have now been refined and officers are all trained for riot control etc. Over the years we have increasingly seen them deployed at football games.

Unfortunately for the Police, the Celtic support has never been in need of riot control, as we are very effective at self-policing. We are also very vocal when it comes to authority abusing our supporters. The targeting of the Green Brigade is political, make no mistake about it, the legislation that was drafted was specifically aimed at Celtic fans. There is video evidence of Christine Graham(Chair of the Justice Committee) stating as a matter of fact that existing legislation doesn’t catch Celtic fans as their songs aren’t sectarian or racist, so we need to even things up. I could go on but we all have read the info that is out there on this issue.

So come Tuesday 2nd April, I along with other Celtic supporters will man the picket lines and protest against the unjust treatment of the members of the Green Brigade and Celtic fans in general. If my daughter allows me, I will bring along my grandson who is 6. His mother and her sisters attended many marches with me when they were younger, they were never really given a choice, I just took them along. I remember how proud I felt when they actually said they wanted to go to the march and rally in Glasgow against the Iraq war, they took a friend along with them and made a video of their day.

This is a fight that needs to be fought and we as a support need to unite and support our fellow Celtic fans against unjust oppressive policing. This will not end quickly and we must be prepared for the long haul and the fight back from the establishment, they will use every media contact they have to try and divide our support. Over the previous 2 years or so a number of fictitious stories regarding the Green Brigade have appeared in the media, these have had the desired effect of dividing the support and spreading miss-information about the Green Brigade. The number of Celtic fans on twitter who are anti-Green Brigade is astonishing, yet when you question their reasons for being against them their reasons are frankly pathetic- “they dress like Neds” “they think they’re special” “they support the IRA”- these are typical of the responses of those that are anti-Green Brigade. Yet few if any have ever spoken to any members of the Green Brigade.

So to all Celtic fans out there I ask that if possible on the 2nd April at a venue as yet unknown, you come along and show your support for your fellow Celtic fans, you never know you just might find you just can’t get enough of this protesting malarkey.

  2. With each passing game their season ticket base for next season is diminishing by the 1000s. A vote for 12-12-18 will be the end of them…….again.

Ernie will quote Dewar Gibb (formerly of the Scottish Party and the Unionist Party) as exampling the ‘origins’ of anti-Irish SNP leanings. He is probably right in regards the individual but connecting those who emerged from the unionist Scottish Party is the misinforming bit. The Scottish Party being a unionist party interested in devolution did not share the separatist home rule views of their merger partners the National Party of Scotland who ultimately shaped the separatist SNP.

What Ernie needs to evidence is anti-Irishism in MacCormick’s left of centre NPS membership who regularly stood against the Unionist Party in order to deduce that SNP origins are rooted in ant-Irishism.

The evidence (such as there is) suggests that anti-Irishism was rooted in unionist politics in the 30s, 40s and 50s.

It seems convenient to ignore that in the debate…………..
